J. Christian Bay And His Account Of Hans Christian Andersen's Visit To Chicago, Rolf Erickson
The Bridge
The legendary Jens Christian Bay, librarian of the John Crerar Library of Chicago, and Danish-American writer, never met Hans Christian Andersen, of course, since he had been but three years old when Andersen died in 1875. And, Hans Christian Andersen never visited America though he had been offered countless invitations.

Critique [Of American Medical And Intellectual Reaction To African Health Issues, 1850-1960: From Racialism To Cross-Cultural Medicine By David Mcbride], Helen M. Castillo
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
David McBride unravels an informative set of historical events linking blacks and the prevailing health care beliefs and practices during the 110 years between 1850 and 1960. That true and empirical medico-sociological research was unavailable in the late 1800s and early 1900s is well recognized, and one need only to review these dates and the literature available on this topic to find these major research limitations.
[Review Of] Richard E. Meyer, Ed. Cemeteries And Gravemarkers: Voices Of American Culture, David M. Gradwohl
[Review Of] Richard E. Meyer, Ed. Cemeteries And Gravemarkers: Voices Of American Culture, David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The twelve individual essays contained in this volume were originally presented as papers in the Cemeteries and Gravestones Section at a conference of the American Culture Association. A short foreword by James Deetz, an early leader in the anthropological study of New England cemeteries from the colonial period, provides some instructive initial insights into the wealth of cultural information which can be derived from the study of mortuary behavior in the United States. Meyer's thoughtful introduction and his topical bibliography, though not exhaustive, will be of considerable utility for those wishing to pursue the research topic further. An index along …
The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley
The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley
Theses and Dissertations
Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.
The situation in Johns Valley, from its early settlement to its demise, demonstrates the hope of the people who settled there and their efforts to make Johns Valley a productive and successful area. History also …

[Review Of] Rodolfo O. De La Garza, Ed. Ignored Voices: Public Opinion Polls And The Latino Community, Richard Santillan
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The past several years have witnessed the publication of a handful of books and articles focusing on Latino politics in the United States. These studies fall into three general categories: the first type of research attempts to shatter the popular myths about the lack of political sophistication among Latinos by discussing institutional obstacles which hinder Latino political aspirations; the second kind of study documents the rich organizational history of Latinos over the past century; the third type of literature promotes a variety of theoretical models as a way to explain the lack of influence of Latinos on the electoral process.
Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill
Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Roscoe Pound (1870-1964) was a noted botanist, jurist, and sociologist who founded the American school of sociological jurisprudence. Pound's sociological ideas originated at the University of Nebraska. Pound developed numerous ties to other sociologists, joined the American Sociological Society, and published in the American Journal of Sociology. Pound's modern erasure from sociological chronicles is attributed in part to hegemonic processes. The collection of archival data for this study in the history of sociology is generalized (by extending Erving Goffman's metatheory of meaning) as "archival frame analysis." Pound's intellectual milieu is analyzed using Mary Jo Deegan's theory of "core codes" …

Abstracts From The Seventeenth Annual Naes Conference
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Johnnella Butler, chair of Afro-American Studies at the University of Washington, directed the seventeenth annual Conference on Ethnic and Minority Studies in Seattle. Graduate students and staff from the Department of American Ethnic Studies provided support for the planning and several students from the University of Washington participated either as presenters or observers. Participants from throughout the United States arrived in Seattle during a rare spring snowstorm to hear papers on the conference theme, "Ethnicity in America: Interdisciplinary Approaches." Participants were welcomed by James D. Nason, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington, and the General …

Notes On The History Of Clinical Sociology At Yale, Judith B. Gordon
Notes On The History Of Clinical Sociology At Yale, Judith B. Gordon
Clinical Sociology Review
This article recounts one version of the attempt to create a department of clinical sociology in the Medical School of Yale University in the late 1920s. The theoretical perspective of Alfred Schutz is used to turn attention to the linkages of generations of sociologists reflected in the construction of our history as told to young sociologists by their elders. Historical documents and the recollections of John Dollard are used to recount the history of attempts to develop support for the Institute of Human Relations, including a department of clinical sociology at Yale Medical School. The idea was supported by Dean …

What It Means To Be A Humanist Sociologist: A Socioautobiographical Perspective, Michael R. Hill
What It Means To Be A Humanist Sociologist: A Socioautobiographical Perspective, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
I am delighted to speak to you as a representative of the Association for Humanist Sociology. It is my purpose today to acquaint you with the Association for Humanist Sociology, to prompt your queries about the Association, and to answer your questions concerning the ways in which our organization supports the humanist values and professional interests of students and practicing sociologists across the country. Prior to talking about the “nuts and bolts” of the Association’s history and member services, however, I turn to my central topic for today: a socioautobiographical perspective on what it means to be a humanist sociologist.
