Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey
Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a history of the original thirty-seven homesteaders of Highland, Utah. It covers a period of about twenty-five years, 1875-1900. The study provides an example of a aberrant community which was not established in the same, distinctive style of settlement as the typical Mormon village. In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.

Designing Computer-Based Writing Tools For Community Action, David Fleming
Special Topics, General
Most word and information processing systems arc designed for either large institutions or individual users. Institutions, of course, have benefitted greatly from emerging technologies. These users cover the spectrum of our economic, political, social, and cultural life: large corporations, banks, insurance companies, government agencies, schools, universities, armed services, hospitals, the media. Individual users have been more recent beneficiaries of technological advances, and the computer has begun to make inroads into the way people interact with one another, manage their affairs, and entertain themselves.
Integration And Resolution, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez
Integration And Resolution, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …

Disimprisoning The Soul From Vergüenza (Shame): A Socio-Political Systems Perspective, Maribal Rodríquez-López
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The role of shame in the lives of people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is examined. Although some will argue that shame can be healthy, it can also be destructive, resulting in immense suffering and dysfunction. Shame is defined as existing not only within an individual, but in families, communities, societies, and nations. This work is heavily documented with supporting materials from sociologists, social workers, psychologists, and historians; as well as the author's personal experience as a woman of Puerto Rican/Taino Indian descent. Further findings are provided from the author's professional work as a registered occupational therapist, crisis counselor, …

Spatial Distribution Of Hispanic Households In Holland, Michigan: 1960-1990, Cynthia J. Longstreet
Spatial Distribution Of Hispanic Households In Holland, Michigan: 1960-1990, Cynthia J. Longstreet
Masters Theses
This paper examines patterns of Hispanic household concentration and segregation from non-Hispanic households in Holland, Michigan for the decades from 1960 to 1990 with some analysis of 1950 patterns. Household data were obtained from United States census reports and Polk directories, from which location quotients and indices of dissimilarity were calculated for census tracts and census blocks within the study area.
Data showed that most of Holland’s Hispanic households have been found in the three census tracts closest to the central city, but that deconcentration is occurring as more Hispanic families setde in peripheral areas of Holland. Data also indicated …

Community Service Learning And School Improvement In Springfield, Massachusetts, Virginia Anderson, Carol Kinsley, Peter Negroni, Carolyn Price
Community Service Learning And School Improvement In Springfield, Massachusetts, Virginia Anderson, Carol Kinsley, Peter Negroni, Carolyn Price
Service Learning, General
Calls for changes in the education system continually issue forth from various segments of society. Each outpouring of public concern challenges educators to address the needs of young people and to achieve school renewal. The current literature on school reform advocates an agenda of improvement efforts aimed at creating effective, caring schools that will provide active learning opportunities for students. develop learning communities, expand learning into the community. foster collegiality among staff members, and enable teachers to become "orchestra conductors" in the classroom rather than lecturers. But educators ask, "How can all of this be achieved?"

Moving Beyond Apathy To Environmental Action, John Fallis
Special Topics, General
It's so nice here compared to Toronto. The air is fresh and the water is so clear. You people don't have any problems.
The city is such a polluted mess. I'd like to help out but I don't know where to start, plus, it seems hopeless!
These are comments of frustrated, environmentally aware high school students who have participated in residential school programs at the Boyne River outdoor and environmental education centre. During their stay of up to a week, their lives have been enriched through a range of outdoor, hands-on, learning experiences. They may have gained a new perspective …
