Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 24, No. 02, Robert F. Blair
Publications
The journal of the Community Develojnnent Society has a responsibility to disseminate information on the theory, research and practice of community development. To fulfill this function the Journal needs to be read by more than subscribers. One way to ensure that the Journal is widely read and cited in research is by having it adequately indexed and abstracted. This issue has been discussed by Society members and members of the Editorial Board. Research on where the journal is indexed was initiated by Phil Favero and completed by editorial staff. Opposite the inside back cover is the list of indexing and …

[Review Of] Robert Rotenburg And Gary Mcdonogh, Eds. The Cultural Meaning Of Urban Space, Douglas D. Brimhall
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
So begins The Cultural Meaning of Urban Space, a compilation of urban case studies edited by Robert Rotenberg, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of the International Studies Program at DePaul University, and Gary W. McDonogh, Visiting Professor and Director of the Growth and Structure of Cities Program at Bryn Mawr. These twelve very diverse chapters attempt to understand the construction of an urban landscape from the cultural and social perspectives of those groups that experience and manipulate the landscape.

[Review Of] Arthur S. Evans, Jr. And David Lee. Pearl City, Florida: A Black Community Remembers, Harriet Ottenheimer
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is a delightful book. Using the words of over two dozen individual residents of Pearl City, Florida, the authors have put together a group autobiography with both historical and sociological significance. A brief introduction provides background and methodology, and two final chapters by Evans and Lee provide analytical insights and theoretical perspectives on questions of history, sociology and social geography.

Higher Education
Do community service. This has been the charge of reports on post-secondary education for the past several years. From the Carnegie report (College: The Undergraduate Experience in Higher Education, 1987) to the passage of "human corps" legislation in California, efforts have been undertaken to expand the number of college students involved in service. Yet students have always done service. Boy Scouts, Key Clubs, Red Cross, fraternities and sororities, undergraduate student projects for the homeless, hungry, and illiterate have .been outlets for service for years. While so many service programs already exist, the real issue is: how do we get a …

[Review Of] Lois Elhert And Amy Prince, Trans. Moon Rope (Un Lazo A La Luna), Laurie Lisa
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In this children's explanatory tale, Fox persuades Mole to go to the moon on a braided grass rope. After Mole slips from the rope and is carried to earth on the back of a bird, he digs a tunnel, which explains why Mole chooses a nocturnal existence. The simplicity of the story, with its trickster characteristics of Fox, belies the actual experience of reading this visually stunning, bilingual, timeless tale.

Using Csl With Special Education And Reading Resource Students, Barbara Carter Ellis
School K-12
During 1992, as my students and myself created a community service learning opportunity, we were introduced to the fun of researching statistics, to developing our problem-solving skills and to the complexities of geography. But most of all we, as a team, learned ways to improve the ways in which we worked with each other in small groups, in our classrooms and in our community.
A Multiculturally-Responsive Tenth Grade English Curriculum Nurtures An Appreciation For Individual Differences By Immersing Students In The Lives Of Others, Jayne Alexander
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
The goal of a practicum was that high school students in non-academic 10th grade English classes would develop an understanding of and appreciation for cultural differences. The English teacher challenged herself, her peers, her students, and the general school population (a regional high school in a growing community in the northeastern United States) to become more knowledgeable and appreciative of many cultures by expanding her own knowledge of ethnic groups; creating a faculty reading club; developing a curriculum that responsibly presented ethnic groups in a relevant format; designing activities that provided opportunities for interaction with other cultural groups and for …
The Population Turnaround: A Case Study Of The Shire Of Toodyay, Matthew A. Tonts
The Population Turnaround: A Case Study Of The Shire Of Toodyay, Matthew A. Tonts
Theses : Honours
During the 1970's a number of Australia's rural municipalities began to counter the long term pattern of population decline. This thesis provides empirical evidence of these changes within Western Australia and investigates the reasons for the turnaround. To develop this, a case-study examination has been made of the Shire of Toodyay in an effort to ascertain the circumstances surrounding households decisions to migrate into rural districts. This study reveals that the newcomer households exhibit a diverse range of characteristics and conform to no clear stereotypical groupings. Rather1 it appears that those who have made the transition have done so in …

Mentoring, Paradigmatic Change, And Institutional Structure: Charles E. Bessey And The Origins Of The Seminarium Botanicum At The University Of Nebraska, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The Seminarium Botanicum was a student scientific club that originated at the University of Nebraska during the closing years of the nineteenth century under the supportive eye of botanist Charles E. Bessey. The “Sem. Bot.” (as the club was known popularly) provided a mainspring for the paradigmatic development of the American school of plant ecology (Tobey, 1981). Based on archival materials at Harvard University, the State Historical Society of Nebraska, and the universities of Nebraska and Wyoming, this paper identifies the interpersonal dynamics and institutional matrix by means of which the “Sem. Bot.” became a catalyst for intellectual inquiry. The …
Organizations And Attitudes In The Local Economic Development Process: A Case Study Of The West Parry Sound Area (Ontario), Darin Gregory Tucci
Organizations And Attitudes In The Local Economic Development Process: A Case Study Of The West Parry Sound Area (Ontario), Darin Gregory Tucci
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The purpose of this study is to further our understanding of the obstacles and catalysts to the local economic development (LED) process. The central issues under examination deal with multi-community and multi-organization integration at the subregional level. These issues are explored though a case study of West Parry Sound Area (WPSA). The difficulties associated with integration and the differences among member municipalities and organizations were evaluated in two ways. First, the agencies involved in the WSPA LED process were examined to assess the organizational structure resulting from overlapping objectives and representatives. Second, the attitudes of key actors within these agencies …

Citizenship Education And The Public World, Harry C. Boyte
Civic Engagement
We need a conception of citizenship that is active, engaged and adequate to the challenges of our complicated world. Citizens develop, they do not emerge full blown; and their capacities are cultivated only through tough, challenging, serious practical and theoretical education in what Benjamin Barber has well termed the democratic arts. Barber and I agree on the importance of a strong conception of citizenship; on the centrality of civic education to any honest rendering of education in a purported democracy; and on the significant challenge such a view of civic education presents to customary ways of conceiving citizenship, education, and …

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Using a case study, the authors explore the mediating role of organizational culture in individual Risk-taking decisions and behaviors. They argue that organizational culture can establish unique conditions that lead to highly reliable performance of high-Risk, undesired tasks. The authors also discuss the need for further research and its implications for Risk management.
