Memories From A Danish American Parsonage, Bodil S. Sorensen Jan 1996

Memories From A Danish American Parsonage, Bodil S. Sorensen

The Bridge

Those of us who grew up in the Danish-American

colonies of the 30' s and 40' s experienced a life that has

now disappeared. It was a rich and unique life. It was a

time of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation immigrants adjusting

to the American culture and at the same time cherishing

their particular brand of Danish heritage.

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf Jan 1996

Family Structure And Institutionalization: Results From Merged Data, James Mcnally, Douglas Wolf

Center for Policy Research

Research on the patterns and behavioral consequences of kin networks among the older population is limited due to the shortcomings of most available survey data. Often, household surveys obtain little information on the number and characteristics of nonresident kin. Moreover, surveys are often confined to the noninstitutionalized population. One possible solution is to merge information from multiple sources, in order to achieve the requisite coverage of populations and data content. This paper reports on the development of a hybrid data base containing observations from the 1987-88 National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and the 1989 National Long-Term Care Survey …

Afrocentrism And The Peopling Of The Americas, Gabriel Haslip-Viera Jan 1996

Afrocentrism And The Peopling Of The Americas, Gabriel Haslip-Viera

Ethnic Studies Review

This essay focuses on a theory of human development that has been promoted aggressively by a group of Afrocentrists in recent years - that the Western Hemisphere was first populated by "Africoids" or "Black" people who came to the Americas by way of Asia and the Bering Straits with little or no change in their physical or racial characteristics. As discussed in this article, the theory has no support in the evidence collected by scientists in various fields. The essay focuses on the basic claims and methods used by the Afrocentrists to support their theory, including their misuse or misinterpretation …

[Review Of] Arjun Appadurai, Modernity At Large, Cultural Dimensions Of Globalization, Hope J. Schau Jan 1996

[Review Of] Arjun Appadurai, Modernity At Large, Cultural Dimensions Of Globalization, Hope J. Schau

Ethnic Studies Review

Modernity at Large is a collection of essays (most of which are reprinted from other sources, e.g., Public Culture) that link the themes of modernity and globalization to contemporary everyday social practice, and to group individual identity construction and expression. Appadurai takes up the conditions of modernity which for him include science as a dominant ideology, obsession with technological development, colonial social relations, and the primacy of national communities. Weaving these conditions with issues of globalization, which he defines as instantaneous worldwide telecommunications (phone, fax, and internet), increased international or transnational migration, the expanding scope and impact of mass media, …

Nigerians In The United States: Potentialities And Crises, Paul E. Udofia

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

This Research Report examines the various waves of Nigerian immigration, community and leadership development, as well as crises in the United States.

This study is divided into three parts. Part I begins with a brief historical overview of the Nigerian background and crises, thereafter showing the patterns of Nigerian immigration to the U.S. and their varying characteristics from 1970 to 1995. Part II analyzes the many ways in which Nigerians have attempted to adjust into the American mosaic, resulting in the emergence of a Nigerian community. Part III focuses on the three types of Nigerian leadership systems that have largely …

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 27, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Good Bye. This editor's note completes my five years as the editor of the Journal of the Community Development Society. It has been a fast and a very important five years. Like most things in this dramatically changing world, in those five years the practice of community development has changed. Likewise the Community Development Society has changed, and I think so has its Journal. Two of these changes are worth noting. First, while still retaining its social science character, the Journal has published articles with broader research questions. In other words, the goals of the articles have changed. While many …

Joan Huber, Irving Louis Horowitz, And The Ideological Future Of Objectivity In American Sociology, Michael R. Hill Jan 1996

Joan Huber, Irving Louis Horowitz, And The Ideological Future Of Objectivity In American Sociology, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The occasion of this essay is an unsolicited but welcome invitation to comment on Irving Louis Horowitz's (1993) most recent book, The Decomposition of Sociology, a work that is generating considerable discussion (e.g., Bauer Mengelberg 1995; Chriss 1994; Goldman 1994; Horowitz 1994, 1995; Pizzorno 1994; Wagner 1994). An invitation to discuss a book by Horowitz in a public forum-to which he is invited to respond-is a genuine honor eagerly accepted here with what is undoubtedly a too small twinge of apprehension, a twinge of the minimally regarded kind that allows proverbial fools to rush into intellectual tight spots from which …

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1996

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt Jan 1996

Paradise In Poverty, Visti Favrholt

The Bridge

Junction City, in the early thirties, was a sleepy, small

town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a

population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be

called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way

and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity

and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went

straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

Community-Based Learning: A Foundation For Meaningful Educational Reform, Thomas R. Owens, Changhua Wang Jan 1996

Community-Based Learning: A Foundation For Meaningful Educational Reform, Thomas R. Owens, Changhua Wang

Service Learning, General

Many of today's leaders in education, business, and community development are coming to realize, even more than in the past, that schools alone cannot prepare our youth for productive adulthood. These leaders are ready to try new approaches that link learning activities in classrooms with a full range of learning experiences available in our communities.

Making "Music At The Margins"? A Social And Cultural Analysis Of Xinyao In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1996

Making "Music At The Margins"? A Social And Cultural Analysis Of Xinyao In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Formalist critics and aestheticians have argued that music does not possess any kind of "extra-musical" significance, that there is no meaning beyond the form and structural relations of the notes. For them, music exemplifies the laws of mathematical harmony and proportion rather than the social and political contexts within which it is produced, reproduced and consumed. This view has been challenged by a number of social theorists: Max Weber, Theodor Adorno and Edward Said have all argued for an understanding of music within its social, cultural, economic and political contexts. Such analysis of popular music is now unquestioned. Indeed, it …

Annotated Bibliography Of Resources For Researching Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen Jan 1996

Annotated Bibliography Of Resources For Researching Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen

The Bridge

Danish-American folklife consists of the expressions of

traditional culture that identify Americans of Danish heritage

as belonging to this small ethnic group.

Encompassing a full range of expressive behavior, ranging

from building and decorating immigrant homes to crafting

intricate patterns with knitting needles, scissors, hammer

and anvil, Danish-American folklife includes any form of

knowledge or skill that is learned by observation or imitation

within a community context (Hansen 1988:23)

Tourism As A Sustainable Rural Development Strategy: Building Consensus In Resident Attitudes, Paul B. Siegel, Paul M. Jakus Dec 1995

Tourism As A Sustainable Rural Development Strategy: Building Consensus In Resident Attitudes, Paul B. Siegel, Paul M. Jakus

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

A survey of community leaders, broadly categorized as business people, public officials, and conservationists, was conducted to assess attitudes toward tourism in a six-county region of the Southern Appalachian Highlands of Tennessee and North Carolina. Broad support for tourism development was found across all groups, with the caveat that economic growth not take place at the expense of community character or environmental quality. In general, however, members of conservation organizations were more concerned about the negative impacts of tourism development than were business people or public officials. The methodology employed highlights issues of agreement and conflict among influential community groups. …

Dimensions Of Farm Commodity Production: Horses, Strawberries, And Why, Ronald C. Wimberley, Robert M. Moxley Dec 1995

Dimensions Of Farm Commodity Production: Horses, Strawberries, And Why, Ronald C. Wimberley, Robert M. Moxley

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

To better understand the social context of food and fiber production, more and more researchers are beginning to study the production of agricultural commodities as independent, dependent, and intervening variables. Typically, these commodity variables are measured in terms of separate crop or livestock products or by ad hoc indexes that summarize several commodities. To assess and better understand the spectrum of farm commodities examined in such research, this study uses North Carolina data from the U.S. Census of Agriculture to factor analyze various indicators of crop and livestock production and to determine any underlying, empirical dimensions. Explanations of the empirical …
