This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Filtering and Neighborhood Change in Omaha's Bemis Park," by Donald Guy.
Many ways to approach the problem of neighborhood change are possible. One major theory in the literature on housing markets deals with the way in which property values in a neighborhood change over time and is referred to as the theory of filtering.

Mortuary Metaphor: Location Of The Remains Of The Deceased As A Symbol Of Group Membership, Barbara Allen Fuchsman
Honors Papers
The question of where to place the dead is a universal problem for mankind. The body of the deceased is not regarded as ordinary carrion. It must be cared for in a correct manner and disposed of in an appropriate place, not simply for hygienic reasons, "but out of moral obligation" (Hertz 1960:27). Death creates similar psychological and social problems in all human societies. Consequently similar kinds of rites, such as rites of separation, of protection, of reaggregation within a new order, and of commemoration, are very widespread, as is the ritual sequence in which they are found (Hertz 1960; …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Bemis Park: A Study of Neighborhood Change," by Garneth O. Peterson.
The 1970's have been marked by a rebirth of inner city neighborhoods for commerce and housing. Developers in Boston, Washington and other cities have begun to rehabilitate old structures rather than destroy them, and thus preserve the visual character of neighborhoods. Residents of older neighborhoods have also banded together into homeowner's associations to lead the attempts to redevelop and rejuvenate their surroundings. 1 The viability of older central city neighborhoods has come to be recognized as essential to the economic …

The Effects Of Urban-Rural Life Histories Of The Aged On Urban Adaptation, Michael R. Deshane
The Effects Of Urban-Rural Life Histories Of The Aged On Urban Adaptation, Michael R. Deshane
Dissertations and Theses
Among the major interests of students of urbanism and urbanization in the United States have been the understanding and explication of differences between urban and rural segments of American society. Coupled with this has been an attempt to theoretically delineate the effects of these differences on the social psychological adjustment of urban and rural inhabitants. The culmination of this work in sociology is to be found in Wirth's (1938) essay "Urbanism as a Way of Life." Wirth identified three major differences between urban and rural lifestyles which have been the impetus for considerable research and controversy. The three major differences …
An Ecological Analysis Of Migration Patterns In North Dakota And South Dakota, Hadley Gerald Klug
An Ecological Analysis Of Migration Patterns In North Dakota And South Dakota, Hadley Gerald Klug
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of socioeconomically defined ecological areas through the replication of the patterned factorial design developed by Loeb! at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The major emphases of the study were to: (1) delineate homogeneous, although not necessarily contiguous, social areas using the patterned factorial design; (2) determine the capability of the previously delineated social areas to account for significant amounts of variation in residually measured net migration; (3) compare the procedures and results of the present study with those of Loebl's work. The study region consists of the states of North Dakota and South Dakota. The units of analysis are …

A Study Of Disadvantagement And Migration For Counties In South Dakota: 1960-1970, Marco Montoya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of the 1970 South Dakota population was conducted to determine: (1) the extent of disadvantagement by magnitude and residence; (2) the association between the extent of disadvantagement and selected socio-economic factors; and (3) the extent to which factors explaining disadvantagement also served to predict migration based on the net migration experiences of South Dakota counties during 1960 to 1970. The county was selected as the unit of analysis. Selected data from the census were aggregated and tabulated. The magnitude of family and unrelated individual disadvantagement in South Dakota during 1970 was identified for rural farm, rural non-farm, and …

KWRRI Research Reports
Samples of water, bottom fauna, and fishes were collected from 66 stations in the Salt River and one of its principal tributaries, the Beech Fork and its tributary, the Chaplin River, Kentucky. Precipitation ranged from 38.86 inches (1969) to 58.04 inches (1970), an increase of nearly 50 percent with marked fluctuations in discharge. Intensive comparisons of phosphates, sulfates, specific conductance, total alkalinity, total hardness, and turbidity showed the streams to be relatively clean and healthy. Nearly 300 different kinds of benthic organisms and other macroinvertebrates have been collected and identified from the basin. Detailed studies of caddisflies and stream drift …

Individual Family Contribution To Paper Pollution In Cache County, Carroll Porter Latham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Paper waste discarded by families of five persons in Cache County was studied for two seven-day periods. The sample consisted of 19 families comprised of a father who was employed full-time, a mother, and three children living at home. A background questionnaire was administered to each family for the purpose of describing the sample.
Sample families were given (1) plastic bags for storing of paper wastes and (2) bathroom tissue, the unused portion of which was collected with the other paper discards. The weight of all paper discards was tabulated for each family and an average was tabulated for families …

Cattle Ranching As A Cultural Ecology Problem In San Miguel County, New Mexico, Thomas J. Maloney
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Studies of cultural ecology, the adaptations of the people of a culture to a given physical and social environment, have usually dealt with a single ethnic group in a single environment. This study is concerned with an unusual situation, two fairly distinct ethnic groups in a region with large areas of distinctly different physical environments.

A Study Of Selected Factors Which Influence Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint Students To Attend The Church College Of Hawaii, Daniel G. Witt
Theses and Dissertations
The object of this study is to examine some of the influences associated with the decisions of Latter-day Saint and non-Latter-day Saint students to attend The Church College of Hawaii. Social scientists have found that an important aspect of any decision situation is a person's orientation to that situation. Such orientations may often have their basis in the child's early relationships with his parents.
