Research outputs pre 2011

The Women in Leadership Program is an exciting development initiative that, over a three year period, has had a visible effect on attitudes towards leadership and the role of women in organisations. As part of the program, through the generous funding support of the Commonwealth Staff Development Fund, the goodwill of staff and the commitment of women examining the leadership challenges facing Australian society today, Edith Cowan University has hosted a National Women in Leadership Conference for the past two years. This Conference provides an ongoing opportunity for women from varied and diverse roles to contribute to our knowledge and …

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie Jan 1993

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie

Higher Education

Do community service. This has been the charge of reports on post-secondary education for the past several years. From the Carnegie report (College: The Undergraduate Experience in Higher Education, 1987) to the passage of "human corps" legislation in California, efforts have been undertaken to expand the number of college students involved in service. Yet students have always done service. Boy Scouts, Key Clubs, Red Cross, fraternities and sororities, undergraduate student projects for the homeless, hungry, and illiterate have .been outlets for service for years. While so many service programs already exist, the real issue is: how do we get a …

[Review Of] Alain Leroy Locke (Jeffrey C. Stewart, Ed.). Race Contacts And Interracial Relations: Lectures On The Theory And Practice Of Race, Vernon Williams Jr Jan 1993

[Review Of] Alain Leroy Locke (Jeffrey C. Stewart, Ed.). Race Contacts And Interracial Relations: Lectures On The Theory And Practice Of Race, Vernon Williams Jr

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Scholars of the history of race and race relations social science should be deeply indebted to Jeffrey C. Stewart for uncovering and meticulously reconstructing these extant lectures by the philosopher better known for his later contributions to the Harlem Renaissance than his social scientific theorizing: Alain LeRoy Locke. The book is an invaluable source on the thought of an African American intellectual on the subject of the nature of race relations during the Progressive Era and on its relationship to ethnic and class relations as well. So fecund are these lectures with insights and hypotheses which deserve further investigation and …

[Review Of] Virginia Yans-Mclaughlin, Ed. Immigration Reconsidered: History, Sociology, And Politics, Janet E. Benson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Immigration Reconsidered presents the latest paradigm of immigration studies from some of the leading scholars in three disciplines. Contributors include historians Samuel Baily, Sucheng Chan, Philip Curtin, Kerby Miller, and Virginia Yans-McLaughlin; sociologists Suzanne Model, Alejandro Portes, Ewa Morawska, and Charles Tilly; and political scientists Lawrence Fuchs and Aristide Zolberg. Several individuals have degrees or interests in more than one field. This book is the outcome of a conference held to celebrate the Statue of Liberty's Centenary. The papers are carefully chosen, of high individual quality, and integrated more than most collections of essays by scholars' responses to each other …

[Review Of] Hsiang-Shui Chen. Chinatown No More: Taiwan Immigrants In Contemporary New York, Janet E. Benson Jan 1993

[Review Of] Hsiang-Shui Chen. Chinatown No More: Taiwan Immigrants In Contemporary New York, Janet E. Benson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book is a recent addition to the Anthropology of Contemporary Issues series edited by Roger Sanjek. The author, now an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, worked as a research assistant on Sanjek's New Immigrants and Old Americans Project in Elmhurst-Corona during the mid-1980s. This was the pilot study for what later became the Ford Foundation's Changing Relations Project, a national study of the impact of post-1965 immigration on American society. Chen, a graduate student from Taiwan himself, noticed a sudden increase in Chinese immigration to New York City after 1982. He chose …

[Review Of] Donald W. Jackson. Even The Children Of Strangers: Equality Under The U.S. Constitution, Jennifer L. Dobson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Can "separate but equal" really be equal? How do we achieve equality through remedial preferential treatment? Does America's "meritocracy" dictate inequality? These compelling questions are addressed in Donald Jackson's Even Children of Strangers: Equality Under the U.S. Constitution.

[Review Of] James Mooney. The Ghost-Dance Religion And The Sioux Outbreak Of 1890, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1993

[Review Of] James Mooney. The Ghost-Dance Religion And The Sioux Outbreak Of 1890, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

On December 29, 1890, at the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, there occurred one of the most bloody and tragic events in American history -- the massacre of hundreds of American Indians by the US Seventh Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek. A principal factor precipitating this atrocity was the American government's misperception of the so-called Ghost Dance which had spread from the Great Basin and Plateau into the Great Plains. Just a week before the massacre, James Mooney (then a young employee of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology) had headed west to study the Ghost Dance phenomenon. …

[Review Of] Joseph J. Tobin, Ed. Re-Made In Japan: Everyday Life And Consumer Taste In A Changing Society, Kumiko Takahara Jan 1993

[Review Of] Joseph J. Tobin, Ed. Re-Made In Japan: Everyday Life And Consumer Taste In A Changing Society, Kumiko Takahara

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The introduction's title to Re-made in Japan, "Domesticating the West," captures precisely the characteristics of the contemporary westernization of Japanese culture. The book is a collection of twelve papers which were originally presented at the American Anthropological Association meeting in 1986 at the University of Hawaii. Japan's economic success has global receptions, ranging from admiration and envy, to resentment. Yet the role of Japan as an avid importer and consumer of western products and ideas is not appreciated. On the contrary, quick adaptation of the Japanese to western culture arouses curiosity, wonder, and even mockery from Eurocentric perspectives. The contributed …

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer Jan 1993

Age And Ethnic Variations In Attitudes Towards Older Persons, Family And Filial Obligations, Suzanne T. Ortega, John Shafer

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Two major interpretations have been advanced to explain the frequent finding that ethnic elders have more extensive kin support networks than Anglo elders. Structural interpretations argue that the exigencies of poverty and ill health cause minorities to rely more heavily on family members for help than Anglos, whereas cultural explanations rest upon presumed differences in family values and attitudes. Despite the prominence of these two explanations, direct tests of the cultural model are rare. In this study, we use data from a study of 100 African, Mexican, Vietnamese, European, and Native American adults to test the hypothesis that there are …

A Participatory Study Of The Self-Identity Of Kibei Nisei Men: A Sub Group Of Second Generation Japanese American Men, William T. Masuda Jan 1993

A Participatory Study Of The Self-Identity Of Kibei Nisei Men: A Sub Group Of Second Generation Japanese American Men, William T. Masuda

Doctoral Dissertations

At one time, the Kibei were perceived as "a minority within a minority" (Me Williams, 1944: 322) who were "distrusted in both America and Japan" (1944:321). But today, the Kibei are hardly distinguishable from the Nisei as they both enter the evening of their lives. Raised in both America and Japan, but strongly influenced in their formative years by Japanese cultural values and beliefs, they were often perceived differently by their own family, by the Japanese American community, and by the American community at large. The apparent marginality of this group, living on the fringes of or in the space …

The Influence Of Religion On The Chicago School Of Sociology, Luigi Tomasi Jan 1993

The Influence Of Religion On The Chicago School Of Sociology, Luigi Tomasi

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper concerns the influence of religion on the Chicago School of Sociology. After showing the marginal importance that religion had in early sociological American studies, this article takes issue with those interpretations that do not acknowledge that the Chicago School remained interested in the topic of religion even after it had freed itself of theological influence in order to concentrate more on solving the problems in America at that time. It is the author's opinion that the Chicago School promoted religious research not only during the time of Albion W. Small and Charles R. Henderson when theological interest was …

Courtroom Observation And Applied Litigation Research: A Case History Of Jury Decision Making, Harvey A. Moore, Jennifer Friedman Jan 1993

Courtroom Observation And Applied Litigation Research: A Case History Of Jury Decision Making, Harvey A. Moore, Jennifer Friedman

Clinical Sociology Review

Quantitative research has dominated applied litigation research, but it seems to lack the flexibility needed to link pretrial research to ongoing courtroom events. Participant observation is a methodology which seems more suitable for studying the dynamic environment of a trial. A 6-day civil trial is used to evaluate participant observation reports against pretrial survey analysis and trial simulations. The objective is to show how different methodological approaches converge in the frame of reference which reflects the actual verdict reached in trial.

Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban Dec 1992

Concern About Eating Genetically Engineered Food, Glenn D. Israel, Thomas J. Hoban

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Concern about eating genetically engineered food is explored for a sample of residents from Florida and North Carolina. Previous research on consumers' food safety concerns and perceived risk associated with food production suggests that concern about genetically engineered food is influenced by three factors. Concern is influenced by how well informed consumers are about food technology, their capacity to understand that information, and the compatibility of genetic engineering with consumers' moral beliefs. Utilizing logistic regression, women and persons who viewed genetic engineering to be morally wrong were found to have greater concern about eating genetically engineered foods. Awareness and educational …
