Illegal, Secret Dogfights And Cockfights Rampant In The U.S. Jul 1979

Illegal, Secret Dogfights And Cockfights Rampant In The U.S.

Close Up Reports

Early in July, a team of more than 30 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers led by HSUS investigators made a raid on a secret cockfight arena on the outskirts of town. More than 100 people were caught inside the building. All were violating Wyoming state law and possibly federal law.

Unlike cockfighting, dogfighting is expressly prohibited in all 50 states. It, too, is a violation of the animal fighting ventures section of the Animal Welfare Act. HSUS investigators are continually following up leads and providing information on illegal dogfights to local animal welfare groups and law enforcement agencies.

The Lark On The Strand: A Study Of A Traditional Irish Flute Player And His Music, Lori Jane Kaplan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis provides an in-depth study of a traditional Irish flute player, Jack Coen. Jack, raised in the village of Woodford in County Galway, immigrated to America in 1949 at the age of twenty-four. With his large repertoire of Irish traditional dance tunes, Jack has played music at parties, dances, with the New York Ceilidhe Band, and at festivals such as the 1976 Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. Jack teaches the flute and the tin whistle and is recognized both as a teacher and as a player.

The Formation Of Desired And Ideal Family Size Among Utah High School Senior Females And Males, 1974, Linda Rose Hagen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to measure the direct and indirect relationships between socio-economic and demographic variables and ideal and desired family size preferences among male and female high school seniors in Utah in 1974. Furthermore, the analysis will be carried out separately for males and females in order to see if male and female ideal and desired family size preferences are influenced differently by the socio-economic and demographic variables. A model will be developed and tested of the process by which ideal and desired family size preferences are formulated.

The model used in the analysis is based upon …

"We see no theological rationale for revising the church's traditional teaching that homosexual erotic behavior violates God's intent."

That comment is part of a 16-page draft statement, "Human Sexuality and Sexual Behavior," approved in mid-June by the American Lutheran Church's Standing Committee for the Office of Research and Analysis (ORA). The statment's one-page treatment of homosexuality is actually a revision of a draft statement adopted by the ORA's standing committee in March 1977.

"The strength I see, the hope I have, is that we are here tonight."

With those words, LHRAA's immediate past president Robert Skare described how the 1979 Human Relations Institute was itself an embodiment of the weekend's theme-"People of Vision, People for Promise: developing Christian leadership for social justice in the 1980s."

Twenty-Five Years Of Growth & Achievement: The Humane Society Of The United States (1954-1979), Patrick B. Parkes, Jacques V. Sichel

Humane Societies and Rescue Organizations Collection

The HSUS came into being because, for several years previously, a great many people throughout the United States were aware of the tremendous need for a strong humane group that would actively endorse and work towards eliminating, on a national scale, some of the more obvious cruelties and injustices imposed on animals in slaughterhouses and by uncontrolled breeding of domestic pets. They also realized the necessity for a humane organization that would act in a missionary role, to encourage and assist in the formation of humane societies in the thousands of towns and areas where none existed.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The presentation of symposia papers in book form poses several editorial problems, the chief of which is maintaining a unity of focus between the various offerings. With one or two notable exceptions, the papers in this collection treat aspects of the Native-American experience within the boundaries of the present state of Iowa, but, unfortunately, that rubric is too broad to provide an organizing principle definite enough to hold the book together. The result is something of a mixed bag. Although each of the papers is presented as a “chapter” and some attempt at cross-reference between individual papers is made, it …

New Skin: Ellison, Jung, And The Unconscious, Dona Hoilman

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Marshall McLuhan contends that the electric media, television in particular, have given Americans the means of instant, total awareness both of themselves, especially of their unconscious or subliminal states, and of others, who may differ in skin color or points of view but with whom total social involvement is now not only desirable, but absolutely necessary in the ontological sense of the word. However, though television may have made us more conscious of our unconscious and more aware of the dynamic relationship between other individuals’ well-being and our own, the mutual feeding and forming and mutilating of one another’s psyches …

Abused Wives, Predictors Of Leaving: Research And Theory, Sandra Schoonover-Kump Jan 1979

Abused Wives, Predictors Of Leaving: Research And Theory, Sandra Schoonover-Kump

Theses

This research examines the psychological and sociological variables that predict whether an abused wife will leave or remain with an abusive partner. The author evaluates four primary theoretical frameworks: masochism theory, learned helplessness theory, modeling theory, and intrafamily victimization theory. To test hypotheses generated by these theories, in-depth interviews were conducted with fifty randomly selected clients from a center for abused women in St. Louis.

The study identifies three major factors that significantly predict an abused wife’s decision to leave:

  • Severity of Injury: Wives who left were more severely injured by their partners than those who stayed.

  • Fear of …

Androgyny And Occupational Choice, Ruth Carol Ellerbusch Jan 1979

Androgyny And Occupational Choice, Ruth Carol Ellerbusch

Masters Theses

Sex-role orientation was investigated in terms of how it related to occupational choice. Sex-role orientation was defined in the following manner: one was either androgynous, masculine, feminine or indeterminate (Bern, 1974). Androgyny is a term used to describe individuals who are flexible in their sex-role orientation, individuals who are capable of being both instrumental and expressive, assertive and yielding, independent and dependent. Masculinity is associated with an instrumental orientation, a concern for oneself and getting the job done and a fondness for what man can make. Femininity is associated with an expressive communal orientation, an affective concern for the welfare …

Themes Elicited By The Senior Apperception Test In Institutionalized Older Adults, Nancy A. Stock

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the major themes elicited by the 16 stimulus cards of the Senior Apperception Test (SAT) (Bellak, 1975). The SAT was administered to 40 institutionalized male and female volunteers from seven nursing homes in the central Illinois region. They ranged in age from 61 to 97 years of age. There were 20 females (mean age = 78.6 years, S.D. = 8.3 years) and 20 males (mean age = 78.l years, S.D. = 10.4 years). All subjects were initially given a brief organic screening device to rule out those subjects with severe or moderate …

Science And Technology's Impact On Critical Social Issues, John E. Haaland Jan 1979

Science And Technology's Impact On Critical Social Issues, John E. Haaland

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Science and technology are uniquely human activities. Today they are terms well known to all of us. Science and technology affect how we think (some would say, "not enough"), how we communicate (some would say ,"constantly but not clearly or credibly") and how we reproduce, use energy and feed ourselves (some would say for each of these, -"too much"!) I want to explore briefly the way science and technology affects how we think and, more specifically, their impact on energy and food.

Three Measures Of Political Alienation, 1952 To 1976, Michael J. Muha Jan 1979

Three Measures Of Political Alienation, 1952 To 1976, Michael J. Muha

Honors Papers

The present study seeks to discover the relationships that exist among three open, operationalizations of political alienation, social location (demographic) characteristics of the individual, and dissatisfaction with government policy. After a theoretical discussion of anomie and alienation and their extensions to political alienation, measures of political cynicism, internal political inefficacy, and external political inefficacy are examined with various measures of ascribed and achieved individual attributes and with the perception of policy differences with the Republican and Democratic Parties. Multivariate models are then used to examine the relative impact of these two set of variables on the measures of political alienation.

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century the University of Nebraska was one of the four leading centers of sociology in the United States. Despite this auspicious start, Nebraska has remained relatively obscure in the accounts of the history of Sociology. This is partially a result of its size: until 1959 the faculty consisted of only five members and was oriented to a small but quality graduate program. The document which follows is an original manuscript recording the early history of the department. It was written by Joyce O. Hertzler in the Winter of 1929. This rough draft, now yellowing and …

A Multi-Valued Attitudinal Study Of Obscenity And Freedom Of Expression, Allen W. Palmer Jan 1979

A Multi-Valued Attitudinal Study Of Obscenity And Freedom Of Expression, Allen W. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine whether religiosity is a determining factor in public reaction to obscenity issues.

A sample population of 452 residents of the community of Idaho Falls, Idaho was selected using a technique based on a list of random numbers in October, 1979. Path analysis, Chi-square analysis and Spearman's correlation were used to measure the results.

The study found there is a significant relationship between religiosity and behavior intention toward obscenity issues. The affective component of the attitude organization functions somewhat as a mediating variable. There were also findings that members of the Church of Jesus Christ …
