In this presentation, Dr. Ralph LaRossa, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, and Dr. Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh, Librarian Associate Professor for Sociology, Gerontology, & Data Services, presented both the theoretical-methodological “logics” and the applied-methodological “logistics” of conducting qualitative data analysis (i.e., non-statistical analysis of textual, audio, visual, and/or audiovisual sources). Dr. LaRossa discussed the steps involved in building theoretically-rich qualitative analyses. Dr. Swygart-Hobaugh outlined the specific features of NVivo qualitative research software that complement and facilitate these analyses.

Invited webinar I created and delivered on using NVivo for sociological qualitative data analysis. Many sociologists like to “get their hands dirty” by delving into deep analysis of qualitative data – be it discourse analysis, in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations, visual and textual media analysis, etc. Manually coding these data sources can become cumbersome and cluttered – and may even hinder drawing out the rich content in data. This paper presentation draws from my dissertation research, in which I examined how Progressive-Era Chicago social reformers constructed prostitution as a social problem. I specifically discuss the rhetorical persuasiveness of the “white slavery” construction, which is primarily examined in Chapter 3 of my dissertation.

This chapter provides a case study of teaching an Honors Freshman Seminar at Georgia State University. The pedagogical goals for this course were: (1) to push the boundaries of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education; (2) to engage students in applying critical-theoretical and social-justice frameworks to the course topics via dialogic, problem-posing learning; and (3) to expand and challenge the students’ perceptions of librarianship by elucidating the role librarians play in social justice and democratizing efforts related to information access.

Constructing The “Social Evil”: An Analysis Of Anti-Prostitution Crusades In Progressive-Era Chicago, 1907-1915, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

This study analyzes anti-prostitution crusades in Chicago during the Progressive Era, using a social constructionist theoretical perspective to explore how crusaders constructed prostitution as a social problem. My multi-faceted theoretical framework drew on both social constructionist theories as well as social movement theories examining collective action frames as master frames. For organizational purposes, the separate analytical chapters examine different groups of crusaders: the crusaders against “white slavery,” those battling “vice,” and a group of Hull House women crusading against the “social evil.” My analyses revealed the following: (1) broader discourses present during the Progressive Era shaped the contours of the …

A Citation Analysis Of The Quantitative/Qualitative Methods Debate's Reflection In Sociology Research: Implications For Library Collection Development, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

This study examines how the social sciences’ debate between qualitative and quantitative methods is reflected in the citation patterns of sociology journal articles. Citation analysis revealed that quantitative articles were more likely to cite journal articles than monographs, while qualitative articles were more likely to cite monographs than journals. Quantitative articles cited other articles from their own quantitative-dominated journals but virtually excluded citations to articles from qualitative journals, while qualitative articles cited articles from the quantitative-dominated journals as well as their own qualitative-specialized journals. Discussion and conclusions include this study’s implications for library collection development.

This research consists of an analysis of “lesbian” identities and sexualities as represented in a sample of contemporary American films. Through this analysis I explored 1) the constructed “lesbian” identities and sexualities; 2) the displays of “lesbian” sexual interactions and their perceived intended audiences; and 3) the differences of these depictions as affected by the persons constructing these representations of “lesbian” identities and sexualities.

This research comprises an ethnographic study of female erotic dancers in a single erotic dance club. Using Erving Goffman’s (1959) dramaturgical analysis of the social construction of the self as my theoretical basis of inquiry, I examined the dancers’ staged performance of a self. I interpreted the erotic dancers’ performances as constructed fronts intended to fulfill the heterosexual male customers’ fantasies of the ideal sexual female. Operating with this assumption, I observed how the erotic dancers created and maintained the ideal sexual female through the manipulation of setting, appearance, manner, and impression management techniques. (Re)Claiming The Discourse Of Desire: An Analysis Of Women’S Erotic Texts, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Upon critiquing MacKinnon and Dworkin’s (Dworkin 1981; MacKinnon 1986, 1987; MacKinnon and Dworkin 1997) stance against “pornography,” discussing the theoretical and linguistic obstacles besetting women’s sexual expression, and reviewing research literature examining romance novels, I then explored erotic short-stories written by women—or women’s “erotica”—as surfaces for the (re)clamation of women’s desire. Drawing from my analyses of fourteen erotic tales from two separate collections, I concluded that the selected corpus of women’s erotica demonstrates the multiplicity of women’s sexual voices and combats the hegemony of a male-centered discourse of desire.
