13 Nationality And Citizenship In Cyprus Since 1945: Communal Citizenship, Gendered Nationality And The Adventures Of A Post-Colonial Subject In A Divided Country, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper examines the issues relating to citizenship and nationality in Cyprus since 1945 from the colonial times to independence. It examines the historical context and evolution of citizenship in Cyprus and then it analyses the legal aspects of the modes of acquisition and loss of citizenship. Finally it looks at the current debates and the challenges of gender equality, migration, Europeanisation and reunification.

The Cypriot Roma And The Failure Of Education:Anti-Discrimination And Multiculturalism As A Post-Accession Challenge, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2008

The Cypriot Roma And The Failure Of Education:Anti-Discrimination And Multiculturalism As A Post-Accession Challenge, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This covers the period prior to 2008. At its outset, this study explores the general context of the Roma in Cyprus and their identity as Cypriot citizens, their legal classification, cultural identity and population concentration. It then examines the legal framework within which the Roma of Cyprus are educated by describing the provisions regarding access to education, as well as recent legislation transposing the anti-discrimination acquis. According to the Constitution of the Cyprus Republic, the vast majority of Roma are classified as belonging to the ‘Turkish community’ without a minority rights status and as such their access to education in …

Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2008

Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter argues that despite the post-colonial Zurich-London legacy and the flaws contained in the final version of the Annan Plan its central pillars provided the basis for a viable, workable and fair constitutional arrangement for both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The plan’s philosophy is in line with human rights conventions, UN resolutions, the EU Acquis and the High Level agreements of 1977 and 1979. It defines ‘a bizonal bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, international personality and citizenship’. The alternative – the indefinite continuation of de facto partition, or a de jure partition, or a ‘return’ to a …

New Female Migration And Integration Related Policies In Cyprus [Co-Authored With Mihaela Fulias Souroulla], Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter is a state of the art on the national context of Cyprus on the subject of integration and migration of mifgrant women. This is a rather problematic venture given that the literature available on the subject is mostly ‘international’ and as such we are forced to erect artificial ‘national’ or ‘state boundaries’ in order to confine the ambit of our work. Secondly, there is an inherent contextual problem relating to the de facto division of the country in which we are faced with the fact that Cyprus is a bi-communal and bilingual country, but due to budgetary reasons …

The Use And Abuse Of Undeclared And Unprotected Labour: Migration, Europeanisation And The Role Of Trade Unions, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper considers the processes, the mechanisms and the social agency involved in what is a widespread phenomenon in Europe and the globe. The paper draws on experiences and knowledge from across Europe and beyond to illustrate the use and abuse of undeclared labour, particularly undocumented migrant labour within the process of European integration in order to consider ways to tackle it.

“Teaching While Black”: Narratives Of African American Student Affairs Faculty, Lori Patton, Christopher Catching Dec 2008

“Teaching While Black”: Narratives Of African American Student Affairs Faculty, Lori Patton, Christopher Catching

Lori Patton Davis

African American faculty have historically been underrepresented within predominantly white institutions (PWIs) and deal with academic isolation, marginalization of their scholarship, and racial hostility. Little is known about the experiences of African American faculty who teach in student affairs graduate programs. The purpose of this study was to focus on their experiences through examination and utilization of their personal counter-narratives. This manuscript highlights the racial profiling that often shapes their experiences. We employ a qualitative critical race analysis that utilizes counterstorytelling as method to elucidate the experiences of the 13 African American faculty participants in our study.

My Sister's Keeper: A Qualitative Examination Of Mentoring Experiences Among African American Women In Graduate And Professional Schools, Lori Patton Dec 2008

My Sister's Keeper: A Qualitative Examination Of Mentoring Experiences Among African American Women In Graduate And Professional Schools, Lori Patton

Lori Patton Davis

Eight African American women’s mentoring experiences in relationships among African American women in graduate and professional schools are examined pertaining to lessons learned, characteristics and behaviors of African American female mentors, challenges with White mentors (male and female), and stereotypical images of African American female mentors. The findings support mentoring as a method of empowerment and uplift. . African American women mentors were likened to “mothering”, students sought alternative mentoring relationships beyond academia, and trust was a major concern with White mentors.

Strength In The Spirit: African American College Women And Spiritual Coping Mechanisms, Lori Patton Davis, Michelle Mcclure

Lori Patton Davis

The authors of this article explored the role of spirituality in the college experiences of 14 African American college women. Often overlooked, racially isolated, misrepresented, and misunderstood, African American women often turn to spirituality as a transformative, regenerative, and uplifting space. Using faith development theory and Black feminist thought as a framework, the findings of this study provide insight into how and why African American women use spirituality to successfully navigate through their college experiences. Discussion and implications for practice are offered for enhancing the spiritual development and success of African American college women.

The Darker Side Of Travel: The Theory And Practice Of Dark Tourism, Philip R. Stone Dec 2008

The Darker Side Of Travel: The Theory And Practice Of Dark Tourism, Philip R. Stone

Dr Philip Stone

Over the past decade, the concept of dark tourism has attracted growing academic interest and media attention. Nevertheless, perspectives on and understanding of dark tourism remain varied and theoretically fragile while, to date, no single book has attempted to draw together the conceptual themes and debates surrounding dark tourism, to explore it within wider disciplinary contexts and to establish a more informed relationship between the theory and practice of dark tourism.

This book meets the undoubted need for a such a volume by providing a contemporary and comprehensive analysis of dark tourism.

Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2008

Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

The idea of the Republic and its value is again the order of the day, not only due to Neorepublican theorists, but also because of many current debates, such as multiculturalism, the laicity of states and societies, transparency and corruption, etc. Along with Republican constitutional rules, principles and values, some proclaimed during the French Revolution (such as Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité), the debate shows the importance of an even deeper question: the importance of virtues, and the Greek legacy of Republican virtues. In this paper, among other points, we remember Pericles’ funereal speech in Thucydides’ History of Peloponnesian War, and some …

Repaying Favours: Unravelling The Nature Of Community Exchnage In An English Locality, Colin C. Williams Dec 2008

Repaying Favours: Unravelling The Nature Of Community Exchnage In An English Locality, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

A recurring assumption in community development has been that when material support is provided on a one-to-one basis to the extended family or social and neighbourhood networks, such favours are repaid by offering help in return rather than money. Reporting a study of the community exchanges of 120 households in an English locality, however, the finding is that well over one-third of these were repaid using money. The outcome is a call for the community development literature to recognise and respond to the existence of this sphere of ‘paid favours’ which demonstrates how monetary transactions can be neither market-like nor …

Urban Nightlife, Social Capital, And The Public Life Of Cities, David Grazian Dec 2008

Urban Nightlife, Social Capital, And The Public Life Of Cities, David Grazian

David Grazian

Sociologists and urban scholars emphasize how nightlife establishments contribute to the social capital and public life of cities. In the interests of tempering this line of argument, I suggest three generalizable empirical findings that provide grounds for skepticism on this score: (1) the racial and class barriers to participation imposed by urban nightlife enterprises; (2) the normalization of gender differences and the routine harassment of women within such scenes; and (3) the lack of inclusiveness surrounding local nightlife in urban neighborhood communities. These findings suggest that nightlife scenes may function more efficiently as generators of bonding rather than bridging social …
