Mental Models Of Autonomy And Sentience Shape Reactions To Ai, Janet V.T. Pauketat, Daniel Burton Shank, Aikaterina Manoli, Jacy Reese Anthis Apr 2026

Mental Models Of Autonomy And Sentience Shape Reactions To Ai, Janet V.T. Pauketat, Daniel Burton Shank, Aikaterina Manoli, Jacy Reese Anthis

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Narratives about artificial intelligence (AI) entangle autonomy, the capacity to self-govern, with sentience, the capacity to sense and feel. AI agents that perform tasks autonomously and companions that recognize and express emotions may activate mental models of autonomy and sentience, respectively, provoking distinct reactions. To examine this possibility, we conducted three pilot studies (N = 374) and four preregistered vignette experiments describing an AI as autonomous, sentient, both, or neither (N = 2,702). Activating a mental model of sentience increased general mind perception (cognition and emotion) and moral consideration more than autonomy, but autonomy increased perceived threat more than sentience. …

The Future Of Dual Immersion In California: Analyzing California’S Global 2030 Goals, Jonathan Tejeda, Kamila Campos, Robert Emmans

School of Public Policy Capstones

California's Global 2030 initiative set an ambitious target: half of all K-12 students to achieve bilingual proficiency by 2030. This qualitative study examines whether Dual Language programs (DLPs) in California's major metropolitan areas are positioned to meet that goal. Drawing on ten semi-structured expert interviews with researchers, administrators, teachers, and nonprofit advocates, the study identifies four central challenges: inadequate student preparedness, chronic underfunding, insufficient teacher training, and a failure to connect students to their cultural heritage. The findings reveal that California lacks the infrastructure, data systems, and financial commitment necessary to achieve the 2030 goals. The authors recommend establishing a …

Participation, Procurement & Proof Of Impact In Public Sector Ai Innovation, Davansh Saxena, Erina Seh-Young Moon, Anna Kawakami, Corey Jackson, Min Kyung Lee, Sarah E. Fox, Shion Guha, Sheena Erete, Jean Hardy

Health Services and Informatics Research

Public sector agencies are rapidly adopting AI systems to make critical decisions that span across services such as benefits eligibility, housing and homelessness services, child welfare services, mobility, inspections, and more. This foregrounds long‑standing HCI concerns about participatory design in settings marked by institutional constraints, public accountability, and uneven power dynamics. While there is broad agreement that community‑centered practices are necessary, practitioners still wrestle with three practical questions: (1) which participatory methods fit distinct stages of the AI lifecycle; (2) what to measure to show that engagement influenced problem framing, data, model, design, or policy; and (3) how procurement and …

Epistemic Pluralism, Open Inquiry, And Constructive Disagreement: Strengthening The 2029 Epas, Nafees Alam, Mary K. Twis, David R. Hodge, Naomi Farber, Pilar Horner, Heidi A. Rueda, Vicki Lens, Brett Drake

Social Work Faculty Publications

The Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2026) shape not only curriculum and assessment, but also the intellectual formation and culture of the social work profession. As the accrediting framework for programs across the United States, the EPAS articulate the definition of competent practice and what constitutes a shared professional identity (Zuchowski, 2024). Yet accreditation standards necessarily do more than articulate competencies; they can also shape which perspectives are institutionally centered and normalized (Sue, 2010). Professional education operates not only through explicit curricular content, but through implicit norms governing what questions may …

Exploring The Stress-Strain Relationship Of Lightweight Concrete To Enhance The Lifecycle Performance Of Transportation Highways And Bridges, Fariborz M. Tehrani

Mineta Transportation Institute

Concrete is the primary construction material of bridges, roads, and other transportation infrastructure across the United States, but conventional normal-weight concrete (NWC) is heavy, prone to cracking, and expensive to maintain over time. This study examines the mechanical properties, durability, and lifecycle performance of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWC) and internally cured concrete (ICC) as alternatives in transportation infrastructure applications. Through laboratory testing, computer modeling, and lifecycle analysis, the research evaluates how these materials perform in terms of strength, flexibility, durability, cost, and environmental impact. The results show that LWC and ICC can meet required strength levels while being lighter and …

Using Universal Consideration And Group-Specific Norms To Identify Students For Gifted Programming: An Empirical Investigation, Jared T. Izumi

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Universal consideration and group-specific norms have been recommended to address the underrepresentation of historically marginalized groups in gifted education programs. The current study evaluated these methods with 7,148 first through sixth-grade students from a single district in the Midwest who were administered academic achievement and cognitive ability measures. Representation indices (RIs) were calculated to measure the impact of local-building norms and different score combination methods. Black and Hispanic students were underrepresented relative to their proportion in the sample for all identification methods (RI < 0.80). Asian and White students were well-represented or overrepresented using all identification methods. However, using local-building norms or different score combination methods resulted in meaningful increases in RIs for Black and Hispanic students, without corresponding decreases in RIs for Asian and White students.

Creative Engagement For Community Through The Life-Span, D. Nicole English, Pelgy Vaz

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Creative Engagement for Community Through the Life-Span

Creative Engagement includes crafts, cultural practices, expressive arts, and activities that bring people together. Having access to such activities enables people to develop healthy habits, social interactions, and build community that can sustain one throughout the lifespan. On-going research indicates that Creative Engagement Activities, and the Communities of Practice that build around them, benefit people throughout the life-span, but become particularly important to older adults, by building resilience and social connections, in the face of inevitable life losses.

The Impact Of Trade Tariffs On U.S. Soybean Exports: A Time Series Analysis Using Sarima Modeling, Haolun Liu

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This study shows how the 2025 trade tariffs affected U.S. soybean export volumes tariff. A Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model was used to forecast exports under a no-tariff scenario by using monthly U.S. soybean export data (January 2000 to July 2025). Then Forecasted values were compared with actual 2025 export volumes. The Result shows a large and sudden export decline in 2025 that are much greater than normal seasonal patterns, suggesting a strong tariff-related disruption to U.S. soybean trade.

Pre-Experiential Constraint Reconstruction: A Structural Account Of The Prior Layer In Dialogue With Jung, Griselda Poe Apr 2026

Pre-Experiential Constraint Reconstruction: A Structural Account Of The Prior Layer In Dialogue With Jung, Griselda Poe

Publications and Research

Experiences commonly described as pre-experiential memory—such as immediate recognition, familiarity without prior exposure, and the sense of "already knowing"—are typically interpreted as the retrieval of stored content. However, this storage-based account does not provide a structurally consistent explanation of how such content is preserved prior to experience or reactivated in a form that aligns with present input.

This paper extends the three-layer cognitive architecture developed in prior work in this series (Poe, 2026n), in which cognition operates across Core processing, Modulation, and an operationally inaccessible Prior layer that supplies constraints to all processing.

This paper proposes an alternative account in …

This study examines two critical digital touchpoints on medical tourism provider (MTP) websites: (1) the accessibility of contact pages which often function as entry points for inquiries, scheduling, and pre-travel coordination, and (2) the authenticity of visual imagery used to shape expectations about care environments, personnel, and technological capacity. A sample of 105 MTPs across all six World Health Organization regions were analyzed using quantitative web accessibility testing and qualitative visual analysis. Results indicate pervasive accessibility errors on contact-page touchpoints and extensive reliance on inauthentic imagery to depict patients, providers, and medical technologies. Together, these practices may distort user expectations …

The Military Officer's Oath To Disobey Lawful But Unethical Orders, Joshua Braver Apr 2026

The Military Officer's Oath To Disobey Lawful But Unethical Orders, Joshua Braver

Northwestern University Law Review

How should a military officer respond to a lawful yet unethical order, unethical in the sense that it conflicts with their professional responsibilities? Army culture, scholarship, and doctrine regard officers as professionals, akin to doctors and lawyers, with expertise in the management of violence and a shared commitment to an ethical code. This code demands obedience to lawful orders to uphold civilian control of the military. But to protect against civilian misuse of the military, the code requires disobedience to unethical orders. Faced with a lawful but unethical order, the military officer is mired in a contradiction in which their …

Breaking The Ice: The Effects Of Climate On Arctic Accessibility & Strategic Capability, Parker J. Peterson, Frank Devito, Alex Guglielmo Apr 2026

Breaking The Ice: The Effects Of Climate On Arctic Accessibility & Strategic Capability, Parker J. Peterson, Frank Devito, Alex Guglielmo

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Arctic sea ice has declined steadily since 1978, reshaping global shipping routes, military postures, and indigenous communities. Reduced ice extent expands access to the Northern Sea Route and Arctic resources while correlating with increased military activity. These changes accelerate economic opportunity but outpace governance, threatening Indigenous wellbeing and regional stability.
