The Anchor, Volume 16.05: February 1, 1903, Hope College

The Anchor: 1903

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Lone Wolf V. Hitchcock, United States Supreme Court Jan 1903

Lone Wolf V. Hitchcock, United States Supreme Court

US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations

This United States (US) Supreme Court case, argued on October 23, 1902 and decided on January 5, 1903, held that the US Congress does have the right to pass legislation that changes the terms of tribal treaties without the necessary consent of the tribes with whom the treaties were made. The petitioner in this case, Lone Wolf (representing members of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache tribes) appealed a decision from the court of appeals from the District of Columbia. The petitioner claimed that the Medicine Lodge treaty of 1867 with the Kiowa and Comanche tribes was violated when Congress passed …

American History And Its Geographic Conditions, Ellen Churchill Semple

Women in History & the Law

She attended Vassar College and travelled to Germany to study under Friedrich Ratzel, an early human geographer. She published this book several years after her return, quickly establishing herself as one of the most influential American geographers of her time. She was a founding member and the first female president of the American Association of Geographers.

Press Gag Law, Robert Satterfield Jan 1903

Press Gag Law, Robert Satterfield

Nelan Political Cartoons

Depicts a large cartoonist labelled "Nelan" dipping a small figure labelled "Penny" in spilled ink with the imprint "Press Gag Law." Behind a small dog says, "How careless of Penny." In 1903, Samuel Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsylvania, signed the Salus-Grady libel law, also known as the "Pennsylvania Anti-Cartoon law," showing his anger with cartoonist Charles Nelan who regularly depicted him as a bird parroting his cousin's rhetoric. There was wide outrage over the Salus-Grady law and it was never enforced and was rescinded in 1907 after Pennypacker's defeat.

71st Annual Report Of The Board Of World Missions, Reformed Church In America

Board of Foreign Missions Annual Reports

The Board of Foreign Missions (later, World Missions) was organized by the General Synod in 1832. The board was under the direction of the RCA but was also under the authority of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. David Abeel led the first mission of the RCA to the island of Borneo in the Dutch East Indies in 1836. Missions also sprouted in four primary target areas: Japan, India, China, and Arabia. In 1857, the board broke away from its ties with the American Board of Missions and established independent missions. Under its current name, the board is …

29th Annual Report Of The Woman's Board Of Foreign Missions, Reformed Church In America

Woman’s Board of Foreign Missions Annual Reports

The Woman’s Board of Foreign Missions (WBFM) of the RCA was organized in 1875 in Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan. Thirteen women, in response to a recommendation of the 1874 General Synod, met to commit themselves to the proposition that women in all parts of the world had a right to a Christian life. Through prayer and monetary gifts, the WBFM supported the schools established by the RCA for women and children at the various mission stations. The organization continued until 1946 when it was absorbed into the Board of Foreign Missions of the RCA. The collection includes annual reports.
