Youth In Leadership Positions: A Mediation Program Proposal, Abigail Horn
Youth In Leadership Positions: A Mediation Program Proposal, Abigail Horn
Sociology
Encountering the justice system can have harmful impacts on a child’s well-being and can lead to negative outcomes in the future, such as missing school and reoffending. This paper proposes a program to combat these impacts by creating infrastructure for schools to handle low level offenses within schools through a mentoring program. After a review of the literature on the current justice system in the United States, rehabilitative and restorative justice practices, and the effects of youth leadership positions, the “Re-Mentoring Program” is proposed. A play on the words "restorative" and "rehabilitative," this program involves youth who have offended, victims, …
Attitudes Toward Harm Reduction Among Criminal Legal Staff, Diamond Meadows
Attitudes Toward Harm Reduction Among Criminal Legal Staff, Diamond Meadows
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are prevalent among individuals interacting with the criminal legal system (Moore et al., 2019). Despite the high rates of individuals with SUDs interacting with the criminal legal system, there continue to be barriers to integrating harm reduction approaches within the system. Harm reduction approaches (i.e., medication assisted treatment) are effective in reducing the negative consequences associated with substance use and the pathway to recovery for many. The purposes of this study are to: 1. examine the psychometric properties of the Harm Reduction Acceptability Scale (HRAS) among criminal legal staff, 2. explore individual differences in staff attitudes …
Examining Professional Self-Doubt And Professional Quality Of Life Among Licensed Professional Counselors In Texas, Celia A. Ramos
Examining Professional Self-Doubt And Professional Quality Of Life Among Licensed Professional Counselors In Texas, Celia A. Ramos
Theses and Dissertations
Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Texas frequently navigate emotionally demanding work, including high caseloads, complex client needs, and sustained exposure to client distress. Over time, these professional demands can contribute to stress, emotional fatigue, and job strain, increasing vulnerability to burnout and reducing professional quality of life (Bardhoshi & Um, 2021; Maor & Hemi, 2021; McCarthy et al., 2010; Thompson et al., 2014). This quantitative research study examined the professional quality of life of LPCs in Texas using the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) based on gender, ethnicity, age, licensure type, years of experience, does work setting induce compassion …
From Clicking To Committing: Psychological Distance And Persuasion In Online Animal Adoption Platforms To Enhance Shelter Visitation, David Goodweather
From Clicking To Committing: Psychological Distance And Persuasion In Online Animal Adoption Platforms To Enhance Shelter Visitation, David Goodweather
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Online animal shelter platforms have become a primary channel through which potential adopters view and evaluate adoptable animals, yet many users do not progress from online engagement to visiting a physical shelter. The dissertation examines how online pet viewing translates into intention to book a shelter visit by focusing on the roles of psychological distance and persuasive influence cues within a high-involvement decision context. Drawing on Construal Level Theory and persuasion research, a sequential process is proposed in which sustained interaction with pet profiles reduces distance-related abstraction, increasing receptivity to influence cues that facilitate movement from initial assessment to action. …
Evaluating The Psychometric Validity Of Science Curiosity, Brooke Simila
Evaluating The Psychometric Validity Of Science Curiosity, Brooke Simila
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
As political polarization and mass distrust in scientific consensus increases, psychologists have sought to understand individual differences that contribute to polarized political and scientific reasoning. One emerging concept in this area is science curiosity (SC), the disposition to seek and engage with scientific information for personal gratification (Kahan et al., 2017). A handful of studies have identified SC as an offsetting variable in politically motivated reasoning (Motta et al., 2021). However, the psychometric structure of SC remains underexplored; it is unclear whether SC represents a distinctive, unidimensional disposition or merely a manifestation of general curiosity traits. The purpose of this …
Narcissism And Eyewitness Identification, Haley M. Hearn
Narcissism And Eyewitness Identification, Haley M. Hearn
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
According to the Innocence Project, 69% of individuals exonerated by DNA evidence were initially found guilty due to an eyewitness misidentification (Innocence Project, n.d.-a). A way that investigators attempt to prevent misidentification is by assessing how confident eyewitnesses are in their identifications. There is a large body of research suggesting that these confidence estimates can, in many instances, operate as reliable barometers of accuracy. However, what if an eyewitness is overconfident? Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by overconfidence. If a narcissistic eyewitness reports confidence in their identification of a suspect, should this report be trusted? Two studies were conducted …
Big Feelings, Fast Decisions: Emotion Regulation As A Moderator Of Impulsivity In Binge And Emotional Eating, Emma G. Folk
Big Feelings, Fast Decisions: Emotion Regulation As A Moderator Of Impulsivity In Binge And Emotional Eating, Emma G. Folk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Emotion-driven impulsivity and difficulties with emotion regulation are both associated with maladaptive eating behaviors, including binge eating and emotional eating. However, it remains unclear whether broader emotion regulation difficulties intensify the influence of impulsive responses to emotional states on these behaviors. This study examined whether emotion dysregulation moderates the relationship between emotion-driven impulsivity and maladaptive eating behaviors. Participants were 266 adults (ages 18–65) who completed measures of impulsivity, emotion regulation difficulties, binge eating, and emotional eating. Moderation analyses were conducted using PROCESS in SPSS, controlling for body mass index (BMI) and gender. Negative and positive urgency were significantly associated with …
Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Of Flash Drought Impacts On Vegetation, Quinton R. Deppert
Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Of Flash Drought Impacts On Vegetation, Quinton R. Deppert
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In 2002, Dr. Mark Svoboda characterized a new form of drought known as flash drought. Flash drought was defined as a rapid decline in vegetation health caused by severe heat and drought. In recent years, attempts to quantify the impacts of flash drought via precipitation, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and temperature indicators have proliferated. What has rarely been quantified is what the rapid decline in vegetation health amid flash drought looks like through remote sensing. This is because vegetation health indices like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are derived from the visible and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and …

Two Genres, One Narrative? A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Gendered Relationships In Top Hip-Hop/R&B And Country Songs (2015-2025), Alyssa A. Yarbro
Honors Theses
For this research, I examined how gendered relationships are depicted in the lyrics of 55 top-charting Hip-Hop/R&B and Country songs from the past decade (2015-2025). I employed Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis to examine how song lyrics use language to reproduce or challenge dominant ideas of gendered relationships. My analysis identified three prominent themes within the lyrics: Respect, Commodification, and Regret. Songs within the Respect category were characterized by these of romance, affection, and non-sexual intimacy. The commodification category included songs that had dominant themes of objectification, sexualization, and depicting individuals as disposable or interchangeable goods. The songs in the …

Research Collection School Of Economics
Advance care planning (ACP) is critical for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective end-of-life care and is typically facilitated by spouses and adult children. Yet, the growing number of older adults without children has been overlooked in ACP research. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine ACP practices and perceptions among childless adults aged 50+ in Singapore, a rapidly aging society with one of the world's highest childlessness rates. Quantitative analyses draw on nationwide survey data (N = 1,500), complemented by interviews with childless respondents (N = 26). We examine multiple dimensions of ACP: formal ACP (e.g., living wills, Lasting Power of …

The Artificial Artist: Considering Ai’S Impact On Image Copyright, Alyse Mandelblatt
Communication Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis seeks to create empirical results to ground what has been a largely theoretical discussion about the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on copyright law in the United States. AI has disrupted traditional ideas of creativity and expression, which are vital communication tools. Copyright is a regulatory agent to encourage the production of unique communication products by giving owners complete rights to their work. Copyright principles conflict with current AI model training practices. This research considers how AI literacy may provide insight into copyright knowledge and AI attitudes for prediction of how common law and AI regulation policy may …

Of The Land And Sea: A Critical Ecocultural Analysis Of Disney's Frozen And Moana, Maggie A. Andress
Communication Undergraduate Honors Theses
Within the modern era of performative inclusivity and widespread greenwashing, it is critical to examine popular media through an ecocultural lens to determine if said media is being handled responsibly as a social practice and if a discursive atmosphere is being created. This paper takes an ecocultural critical analysis of Disney’s worlds of Frozen and Moana, inspecting their treatment of the human, treatment of the more-than-human, and human/more-than-human relationships. This study finds that although both franchises have been broadly praised for cultural representation of Indigenous people groups, Disney’s failure to effectively acknowledge the intrinsic relationship between humankind and the …

Changing U.S. Military Force Structure: Rebuilding Confidence In Public Institutions By Bridging The Civil-Military Gap, Corri Zoli, Linda Euto
Changing U.S. Military Force Structure: Rebuilding Confidence In Public Institutions By Bridging The Civil-Military Gap, Corri Zoli, Linda Euto
The Lender Center for Social Justice
This research brief assesses a changing U.S. military force structure in an era of waning trust in public institutions and new security pressures, both domestic and global. While many U.S. public institutions are facing declining trust, one key aspect in the case of the military is lack of understanding between U.S. veterans and nonveterans—often termed the civil-military gap. Understanding this gap is necessary to forge connections across military-connected communities and those without service experience. Bridging this gap is a timely model to restore baseline confidence in many institutions that serve all members of the public.

The researcher explores the phenomenon in this paper. This research proposal utilizes qualitative methods via interviews, and analysis through coding. In previous research, there is a lack of inclusion on the gender wage gap regarding various identities such as sexual orientation, other gender identities, and race/ethnicity. The researcher hopes to fill in these gaps in …
The Link Between Incarceration And Education Level: Exploring The Correlation, Robert M. Sandoval
The Link Between Incarceration And Education Level: Exploring The Correlation, Robert M. Sandoval
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Mass incarceration is on the rise, with education level being a strong predisposition indicator. A quantitative approach and survey method will be used to understand the correlations between the two social challenges. This research proposal is expected to reveal how education level significantly determines the probability of a person becoming incarcerated in California. A significant gap exists in understanding the intersectionality between education and mass incarceration. Intersectionality is a theory proposed by Kimberlie Crenshaw that discusses how people’s identities do not only stack on top, but also intersect to cause unique barriers. For example, Black women’s experiences with employment due …

Intimate Partner Violence In Immigrant Communities: A Qualitative Study, Melina Ruiz-Reyes
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an important issue affecting immigrant women, specifically those from collectivistic cultures, due to social norms that can make them highly vulnerable. This study investigates the underlying causes of IPV in these communities, focusing on cultural, legal, and systemic factors. Despite the prevalence of IPV, immigrant women face unique barriers to seeking help, including stigma, legal vulnerabilities, and economic dependence. Previous research has mainly focused on specific ethnic groups, missing a broader, intersectional understanding of IPV across diverse immigrant communities. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semi- structured interviews based on the Danger Assessment for …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant health concern disproportionately affecting the LGBTQIA population and system-involved youth with a prevalence as high as 20% and increasing. Historically, treatment has been inadequate, as interventions were designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), depression, or suicidality. Patients consistently report negative stigma, contributing to poor treatment outcomes and consequently failing to seek professional help or cease treatment. Mental health professionals report experiencing bicurious trauma, increasing the likelihood of burnout. This study aims to evaluate the effects of online self-paced NSSI training on clinical social workers’ confidence when treating clients who engage in NSSI. The …

Utilizing A Social-Ecological Approach To Understand Healthcare Professional's Ability To Identify Child Sexual Exploitation, Vanessa Gudiel, Alyssa Fierro
Utilizing A Social-Ecological Approach To Understand Healthcare Professional's Ability To Identify Child Sexual Exploitation, Vanessa Gudiel, Alyssa Fierro
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC) are an underrecognized population who face barriers when receiving healthcare services in emergency settings. A common theme that prevents them from receiving services is the healthcare professionals' (HP) inability to recognize warning signs and engage with victims. This stems from an absence of CSEC-focused curriculum in institutional settings, leading to a lack of education and confidence in identifying CSEC. CSEC screenings are not mandatory in most healthcare settings, leaving the discretion to the HP and enabling the continued missed opportunity to identify victims. The proposed study will utilize an exploratory design to conduct qualitative interviews …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an administrative program that protects young immigrants from deportation while granting them access to education and employment. DACA recipients face challenges in accessing resources due to their temporary status and the unpredictability of immigration laws, leading to mental health risks from stigma, anxiety, and fear of deportation. However, little research has examined how DACA's instability and immigration politics affect psychological well-being and access to services over time. This study examines how restrictive immigration policies affect DACA and undocumented people's mental health and access to culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health and social services. This …
