Anxiety And Intuitive Eating: Examining Dispositional Mindfulness As A Protective Factor, Jordan Signorelli May 2026

Anxiety And Intuitive Eating: Examining Dispositional Mindfulness As A Protective Factor, Jordan Signorelli

All Theses

Intuitive eating (IE) is an anti-diet approach focused on listening to internal hunger and fullness cues and is associated with reduced disordered eating patterns and improved dietary intake. However, anxiety negatively impacts IE. Dispositional mindfulness (DM) – one’s innate, present-centered, nonjudgmental awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations – is associated with lower anxiety and greater IE. Yet, whether DM mitigates the negative impact of anxiety on IE remains underexplored. Grounded in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Framework, this study aimed to: 1) examine the relationship between anxiety and IE, 2) examine the relationship between DM and IE, 3) examine whether …

Machine-Learning Landslide Susceptibility And Runout Modeling In The Nolichucky River Gorge After Hurricane Helene, Grace Braver May 2026

Machine-Learning Landslide Susceptibility And Runout Modeling In The Nolichucky River Gorge After Hurricane Helene, Grace Braver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extreme rainfall from Hurricane Helene (September 2024) triggered widespread landslides across the southern Appalachian region, highlighting the need for rapid landslide susceptibility assessments that capture both landslide initiation and downstream runout. Traditional susceptibility models often focus solely on initiation zones, limiting their ability to identify which slopes will generate destructive landslides or where material will travel. This study addresses that gap by (1) integrating Geographic Information System (GIS)-based machine learning susceptibility modeling using ArcGIS Pro: Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) and Random Forest-Based and Boosted Classification and Regression (FBBC) and (2) the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Grfin (Growth, Flow, and Inundation) runout …

Assessment Of Super Absorbent Polymer In Soybean Cultivation Under Variable Irrigation Conditions In Nebraska, Ankit Chandra, Abia Katimbo, Ronaldo Marchezan, Martha Nabaggala May 2026

Assessment Of Super Absorbent Polymer In Soybean Cultivation Under Variable Irrigation Conditions In Nebraska, Ankit Chandra, Abia Katimbo, Ronaldo Marchezan, Martha Nabaggala

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Water limitation is a primary constraint to soybean productivity in both irrigated and rainfed systems. Soil-applied superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) have been proposed as a strategy to buffer crops against episodic drought stress; however, their physiological and agronomic performance under varying irrigation regimes remains insufficiently quantified. Here, we evaluate three biodegradable polymer formulations: broader granules (BB), original granules (OG), and powder (PWR) applied at low (17.7 lb/ac) and high (120 lb/ac) rates under full (100% ET), reduced (50% ET), and no irrigation conditions in western Nebraska. Polymer application had negligible effects under full irrigation, with yields comparable to untreated controls. Under …

Bitcoin Options Risk-Reversal Predictability, Meng Hwee Neo May 2026

Bitcoin Options Risk-Reversal Predictability, Meng Hwee Neo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation examines whether Bitcoin options risk-reversal (RR) spreads predict future Bitcoin returns, using daily Deribit data from April 2021 to December 2025 (1,723 observations).

In the primary 25-delta, 90-day specification, the RR coefficient is significant at the 1% level in a thirteen-variable baseline regression with Newey–West standard errors. Robustness tests across all available delta–tenor specifications show statistically significant RR coefficients in the majority of configurations, concentrating in the 30–180-day maturity band.

The butterfly spread (BF) also predicts returns. Both remain significant after controls are added: the RR t-statistic increases from 1.91 (univariate) to 3.73 (full baseline), and the BF …

Essays On High-Frequency Dynamics Of Asset Prices, Yuhong Zhu May 2026

Essays On High-Frequency Dynamics Of Asset Prices, Yuhong Zhu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation studies econometric inference for high-frequency financial data, with a focus on detecting nonstandard drift and volatility dynamics in continuous-time models.

The first chapter proposes a new framework for uniform inference on explosive drift in high-frequency data, where conventional Gaussian approximations can fail due to the non-Gaussian behavior of short-window spot statistics. Under fixed-window asymptotics, these statistics are coupled with dependent t variables, and their maximum converges to a Fréchet distribution. We establish an anti-clustering condition for dependent t-statistics under overlapping windows and develop a feasible coupling-based test. Simulation results demonstrate better size control, and the empirical findings suggest …

Essays On Money Search Models, Fangfang Gong May 2026

Essays On Money Search Models, Fangfang Gong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation comprises three papers that use money search models to revisit the distributional welfare costs of inflation, study the optimal design of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), and investigate the role of liquidity and monetary policy in initial investment and capital reallocation in secondary markets.

The second chapter develops a micro-founded general equilibrium model of payments to revisit the distributional welfare costs of inflation. We consider different cost structures incurred by merchants when accepting cash and deposits. In equilibrium, there exists a cutoff for buyers’ money holdings, above which card payments are accepted by merchants. We calibrate the …

Uncertainty, Information, And Major Choice: Evidence From Chinese Gaokao, Sikun Dou May 2026

Uncertainty, Information, And Major Choice: Evidence From Chinese Gaokao, Sikun Dou

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

An unresolved background risk makes people more averse to other, independent  risks—most of all when a high-stakes, irreversible choice must be made under that risk. College major choice is such a setting. In China, students are admitted directly into a major they cannot easily change, and in the early 2000s they had to commit before learning their exam scores, bearing a field’s academic risk on top of an unresolved admission risk. Because STEM fields carry more academic risk and women are on average more risk-averse, this burden falls hardest on women’s entry into STEM. Exploiting a reform that moved application …

Susceptibility To Memory Errors Created By Leading Questions Based On The Perceived Authority Of Interviewer, Clay K. Wollard May 2026

Susceptibility To Memory Errors Created By Leading Questions Based On The Perceived Authority Of Interviewer, Clay K. Wollard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

It has been well established that memory of an event can be modified by introducing misinformation through questioning. This study fills a gap in the research literature by testing the potential relationship between perceived authority and susceptibility to misinformation. This was measured through showing participants a video of a traffic accident and asking them questions about the events they witnessed. Participants were also asked to rate their confidence in the correctness of each answer to determine if there are any correlations between authority, correct answers, misinformation, and confidence. Authority was conveyed through the clothing worn by the researcher during each …

The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson May 2026

The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper will explore whether collegiate student-athletes at the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO) engage with art-based pre-performance rituals (PPRs) and, if so, examine their perceived effects on mental preparation prior to competition. Research has discussed traditional preparatory routines (PRs)—breathing techniques, visualization, goal setting, and problem-solving—creating a gap for understanding how creative or symbolic rituals function in the realm of collegiate sports. Combining Clifford Geertz's (1973) anthropological framework of ritualized behaviors acting as “meaning-making systems” with empirical evidence supporting art therapy, this research positions symbolic art-based interventions as PPRs, helping athletes with focus, emotional regulation, and confidence prior to competition. …

Sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent and burdensome non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet the contribution of prior traumatic brain injury (TBI) to these problems remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the number and severity of lifetime head injuries predicted sleep disturbances in individuals with PD. Data from 3,055 PD patients enrolled in the Fox Insight study were analyzed, including 1,593 with a history of head injury. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing head injury history, motor and cognitive symptoms, and sleep disturbances. Generalized linear mixed models tested whether head injury history and …

Examining The Effects Of Boundary Management Practices Amongst Remote Workers In A Post-Pandemic World, Rosalia G. Casas May 2026

Examining The Effects Of Boundary Management Practices Amongst Remote Workers In A Post-Pandemic World, Rosalia G. Casas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

With remote work on the rise after a world-wide pandemic, boundary management practices have been harder to establish for employees because of the high levels of integration that is seen when working from home. Identifying the impact that boundary management behaviors have on employees is important amongst remote workers because they are more often at risk for work-life spillover and conflict because of permeability between domains. This study looks at the relationship between work arrangements and employee outcomes such as work family conflict and job satisfaction with boundary preference and family supportive supervisor behaviors as moderators. Using linear regression models, …

Ableism In Higher Education: Platicas Framing Faculty Perception Of Student Accommodations And A Call To Action, Stephanie P. Rivas May 2026

Ableism In Higher Education: Platicas Framing Faculty Perception Of Student Accommodations And A Call To Action, Stephanie P. Rivas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Academic ableism and traditional educational practices hinder the success of disabled students (Dolmage, 2017). As a student with disabilities, I have witnessed gradual improvements in the perception of disabilities in education. However, academic ableism persists in today’s higher education institutions, which can be disheartening for students like me, an unapologetically disabled person. This study employs framing theory, a communication theory that explains how people interpret and organize information (Goffman, 1947). These frames influence how accommodations are perceived, shaping attributes and connections between behaviors and potential causes (Tewksbury & Scheufele, 2019). Using platicas, a kind of cultural method of open conversational …

The Role Of Placement Experiences In Foster Youth Vulnerability To Commercial Sexual Exploitation, Viridiana Jauregui Estrada May 2026

The Role Of Placement Experiences In Foster Youth Vulnerability To Commercial Sexual Exploitation, Viridiana Jauregui Estrada

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Youth involved in the child welfare system face a heightened risk of commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), particularly those who experience placement instability or placement in congregate care settings. While existing research consistently documents the overrepresentation of foster youth among those impacted by CSEC, less attention has been given to how specific placement experiences function as mechanisms that shape vulnerability. Guided by the Complex Trauma Framework and the Socio-Ecological Theory, this study will examine how placement instability and placement type increase foster youths’ vulnerability to CSEC and explore the role of trauma-informed social work interventions in mitigating these risks. …

Impact Of Affirmative Care For Lgbtqsia2+ Youth In Foster Care, Jody Brown

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

One of the major challenges within the child welfare system is that LGBTQSIA2+ youth often face discrimination, stigma and have limited access to mental health services. Although previous research has identified LGBTQSIA2+ youth being overrepresented in foster care, they face distinctive vulnerabilities that are inadequately addressed in present policies within child welfare practices. Despite experiencing higher levels of placement instability and being at greater risk of anxiety, depression and psychological distress, there remain gaps in tangible support and evaluating the effectiveness of intersectionality of lived experiences of LGBTQSIA2+ youth in the foster care. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This literature underscores the vital role of protective factors in reducing

acculturative stress among Latinx immigrants. Key factors such as social

support, religious affiliation, familism, and physical activity help contribute to

mitigating the negative effects of acculturation. The Latinx community can

significantly benefit from integrative, culturally responsive interventions informed

by social work frameworks such as ecosystems theory and critical race theory

(CRT) as they are essential in addressing the mental health needs of this

population. Despite existing research, gaps remain in understanding the full

scope of the Latinx immigrant experience, suggesting a need for further

exploration. The expected findings will …

The Different Effects Of Housing First Policies On Homeless Men And Women With Substance Use Issues, John Carlin, Simon Ogom, Kimberly Quiles, Juan Zamudio May 2026

The Different Effects Of Housing First Policies On Homeless Men And Women With Substance Use Issues, John Carlin, Simon Ogom, Kimberly Quiles, Juan Zamudio

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Substance use is a prevalent issue in the homeless population, and in recent years, the homeless population has continued to grow. HF is a model where a homeless person is placed in housing with no preconditions. This model has been shown to be an effective tool in solving homelessness while also mitigating the rate of substance use in this population. However, there is no clear data on whether women benefit at the same rate as men in HF, and the majority of current studies are male-focused. Women often face unique issues like higher levels of assault while homeless, and it …

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro May 2026

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects an individual’s communication, social interactions, and behavior. Approximately 1.7% of children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD. Families raising children with ASD face significant challenges, including limited support systems, caregiver fatigue, and financial strain. These difficulties increase the likelihood of maltreatment, leading to higher rates of children with ASD being referred to Child Welfare Agencies. Once involved in the system, children with ASD often encounter difficulties in finding appropriate long-term foster or kinship placements, which can result in high rates of placement instability. This research seeks to identify …

Countering Anti-Immigrant Narratives: Promoting Socio-Emotional Well-Being Through Familism, Counter-Storytelling, And Community Building In Latinx Family Workshops, Sitlaly Irais Jimenez Preciado

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In recent decades, the United States has seen a growing anti-immigration climate marked by restrictive policies, racialized political rhetoric, and public discourse targeting immigrant communities. This environment has heightened fear, discrimination, and exclusion for immigrant families, especially those of Latinx origin, affecting daily life in schools, healthcare, and community spaces (Caballero et al., 2022; Roche et al., 2021). These families experience socio-emotional challenges, including anxiety, depression, and fear, alongside barriers to social and health services.

While research documents the harmful effects of anti-immigration policies and rhetoric on Latinx families, few interventions focus on protective factors that help Latinx families navigate …

Trauma-Informed Approaches In Correctional Settings, Mahlet T. Habtemeskel May 2026

Trauma-Informed Approaches In Correctional Settings, Mahlet T. Habtemeskel

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Trauma‑informed care (TIC) has become an important framework for understanding and responding to the needs of incarcerated individuals, who experience disproportionately high rates of childhood adversity, interpersonal violence, and systemic trauma. Research has shown that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) early victimization shapes individual behavior patterns, justice system involvement, and emotional regulation (Ratcliff et al., 2025; Marotta, 2022). Traditional correctional models rooted in punishment, control, and surveillance often repeat the dynamics of past trauma, exacerbating emotional dysregulation, behavioral challenges, and recidivism (Desai, 2019; Slovinsky, 2023). This thesis examines the theoretical foundations, implementation strategies, and outcomes of trauma‑informed approaches in correctional settings …

Evaluating Long-Term Seasonal Variability Of Aerosol Optical Properties In Colorado, Erin K. Boedicker, Andre Bergeron, Gerardo Carrillo-Cardenas, Dominik Kulakowski, John Rogan, Elizabeth Andrews, Gannet A. Hallar May 2026

Evaluating Long-Term Seasonal Variability Of Aerosol Optical Properties In Colorado, Erin K. Boedicker, Andre Bergeron, Gerardo Carrillo-Cardenas, Dominik Kulakowski, John Rogan, Elizabeth Andrews, Gannet A. Hallar

Geography

Aerosol particles resulting from both wildfires and dust events introduce considerable uncertainty into both climate research and public health assessments. These challenges are becoming particularly evident in the western US. To gain a deeper understanding of western US aerosol properties, we analyzed 13 years (2011–2024) of surface in-situ aerosol optical data from Storm Peak Laboratory (SPL) in northwestern Colorado, and 6 years (2019–2024) of surface in-situ aerosol optical data from Table Mountain (BOS) in central Colorado. The aerosol optical properties at both sites demonstrate a strong summer wildfire smoke signal (peaking in August) and evidence of springtime dust events. BOS …
