Political Economy Of Cross-Border Trade Between Indonesia And Malaysia: Local Product Opportunities And Challenges In West Kalimantan, Shanti Darmastuti, Nurfarah Nidatya, Dini Putri Saraswati, Alfiyah Nur Rahmalia
Jurnal Wacana Politik
As a key element of the political economy, cross-border trade makes a substantial contribution to community welfare while also supporting national economic growth. West Kalimantan, which borders Sarawak, Malaysia, serves as a strategic economic corridor in Indonesia, facilitating the movement of people and goods through the National Border Post. Although local products are the main commodities traded at this border, issues of product competitiveness, market stability, and border security pose major challenges to trade. Within the framework of cross-border political economy, this study examines both the opportunities and challenges in trading local products. It emphasizes how government initiatives, institutional coordination, …

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This study explores how six education faculty members in the School of Education at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the southeastern United States interpret and implement instructional technology instruction through a hermeneutic theoretical lens. Grounded in the HBCU’s School of Education vision statement, the research investigates how faculty members’ understanding of human learning behaviors shapes their pedagogical choices within School of Education courses. The qualitative analysis revealed three key themes: (1) Technology as a Tool for Equity and Inclusion, (2) Alignment with the School of Education Vision, and (3) Student-Centered, Practice-Oriented Use of Technology. Rather than employing …
Adversarial Comparativism: The Role Of Emotion In United States–China Comparative Law Projects, Matthew S. Erie
Adversarial Comparativism: The Role Of Emotion In United States–China Comparative Law Projects, Matthew S. Erie
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Contemporary comparative law operates across a landscape riven by protectionism, nationalism, and securitization, all of which complicate comparative law projects. Nowhere is this more evident than in the U.S-China relationship, the most important bilateral relationship in the world. Despite economic “delinking,” the U.S. and Chinese legal systems are interacting more than ever; however, how this interaction works is poorly understood. This Article proposes “adversarial comparativism” to explain this dynamic. It is an approach to comparative law and politics that includes different modalities: competition, aggressiveness, transactionalism, misunderstanding, opportunism, and gaslighting. Many of these are underpinned by emotion. As such, while this …

This special issue of Research in Educational Policy and Management (REPAM) highlights, amplifies, and centers Activist Scholarship, bringing together impactful academic research with community advocacy and action that advances social justice. Today’s world presents global, national, and local challenges such as climate change, civil unrest, growing economic divides and polarization, and ongoing discrimination that requires more than just observation, critique, or explanation. Now, more than ever, researchers and practitioners need to collaborate and contribute to making a real difference by leading work that is not only informative but also transformative (Gutierrez & Lipman, 2016; Johnson, 2023). Narratives Of First-Generation Mexican American Bilingual Licensed Counselors, Marleny Soriano
Narratives Of First-Generation Mexican American Bilingual Licensed Counselors, Marleny Soriano
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the growing demand for mental health services in Spanish, bilingual counselors are often ill-equipped to provide services in Spanish and frequently enter state-required supervised licensure without adequate training or opportunities for clinical supervision to support their growth as bilingual counseling professionals. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to answer the research question: What are the narratives of first-generation Mexican American bilingual counselors during supervised licensure? Guided by Anzaldua’s Borderlands Theory as a conceptual framework, data were collected from eight participants through semi-structured virtual interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed four themes mirroring the stages of …
Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla
Reducing Youth False Confessions With Attorney Presence, Rosa Bowden-Maccalla
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Interrogation techniques are influenced by the interrogator's style and the individual being interviewed. Most law enforcement agencies use adult-centered interrogation methods, leading to suboptimal results when working with youth. The research has focused on youth offenders in the interrogation room and the choices they make, often leading to false confessions when an attorney is absent. This suggests that the presence of legal representation helps protect youths' vulnerability, suggestibility, and rights, thereby reducing the likelihood of false confessions. This qualitative collective case study aimed to understand why youth offenders falsely confess by collecting seven anonymous questionnaires from multigender U.S. practicing attorneys …

Emotional Regulation Strategies Used By Indonesian Teachers In Thailand: Descriptive Qualitative Study, Didit Haryadi, Jeffrey Dawala Wilang
The Qualitative Report
The significance of this study is to explore insights into the emotions experienced by Indonesian English teachers in Thailand, highlighting their emotional journeys and the emotion regulation strategies they use. Ten Indonesian English teachers from diverse elementary and secondary schools across Thailand voluntarily participated in this qualitative research. Through semi-structured interviews, the collected data were analyzed deductively, applying Richards' (2020) framework to examine teacher emotions and Gross' (1998) framework to analyze emotion regulation strategies. The findings reveal a wide range of emotions, including happiness, pride, anger, confusion, loneliness, and mixed emotions. Notably, emotion regulation strategies, situation modification, and response modulation …

“Fairy-Tale Beginnings Are Often Pretty Bad.” Filling The Gaps Of The Adoption Experience With Narrative Inquiry, Christina B. Gunther, Michelle A. Cole, Robin L. Danzak
The Qualitative Report
This study utilized narrative inquiry to delve into some of the less-celebrated experiences of adoptees and their families. Drawing on focus group data from 17 adult participants with various connections to adoption, we co-constructed three composite narratives centering on darker aspects of the adoption experience: adoptees’ sense of loss, adoption as a secret or taboo, and the challenging implications of interracial adoption. By weaving together participants' authentic voices, the study provides rich insights into the multifaceted experiences of those touched by adoption. The narratives reveal complex emotional journeys of adoptees, including feelings of rejection and grief, identity struggles, and the …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Remarriage offers the opportunity to create new family structures, giving individuals second chances to forge meaningful connections and develop new family dynamics. This study involved investigating the experiences of newly-married Black American couples with children as they faced challenges inherent to blended family dynamics. The objective was to understand how these families navigated the complexities of integrating different family systems during their formative years. Using a basic qualitative research design, the study was guided by Bowen’s family systems theory, which emphasizes how individuals construct knowledge within their socioemotional contexts. A convenience sample of nine spouses from blended families was purposefully …

From Rivalry To Ritual: Sungkeman As A Strategic Political Communication Tool In Indonesian Politics, Fitra Hadi Khaz, Erinaldi Erinaldi, Refdi Refdi, Dede Mirza
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study explores the overlooked phenomenon of “political sungkeman “ as a culturally rooted yet politically strategic gesture performed by Prabowo Subianto toward Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during Indonesia’s 2019 and 2024 presidential elections. While symbolic gestures have been widely studied in global political communication, limited attention has been paid to how localized traditions like sungkeman are adapted to mitigate polarization and influence public perception in highly mediated electoral contexts. Utilizing a qualitative literature review combined with political discourse and media framing analysis, this study investigates the role of sungkeman through five analytical dimensions: political reconciliation, cultural symbolism, image strategy, public …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background and aim
Higher dietary flavonoid intake has been associated with lower risks of mortality and major chronic disease, yet its relationship with psychological well-being (PWB), a key contributor to health and quality of life, remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate bidirectional associations between dietary flavonoid intake and two PWB facets: happiness (positive emotional state) and optimism (generalized expectation of positive outcomes). Specifically, we examined whether (1) overall flavonoid-rich dietary patterns (flavodiet score), (2) intake of specific flavonoid-rich foods, and (3) total flavonoid and subclass intakes were each associated with happiness and optimism over time. Methods

Institutionalization Of The Myanmar Government’S Illiberal Peacebuilding In The Karen National Union (Knu) Armed Conflict, Salsabilla Azzahra, Adhi Cahya Fahadayna
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This article examines the Myanmar government’s illiberal peacebuilding practices in addressing the ongoing conflict with the Karen ethnic group. Using qualitative descriptive methods and a literature review, the author analyzes the dynamics of the relationship between the state and the Karen ethnic group, examining how security strategies, co-optation, and discriminatory policies are employed to suppress resistance. Using Comparative Historical Analysis as its method, this article will discuss the issue of this conflict from 2015 to 2021. The study shows that the 2015 nationwide ceasefire agreement failed to achieve inclusive peace; the Myanmar government prioritized stability and territorial control through repressive …

Muslim-Based Parties And The Strategic Use Of Polarization In Indonesia’S Multiparty Politics After 2014, Ari Ganjar Herdiansah, Raden Widya Setiabudi Sumadinata, Aliyuna Pratisti
Jurnal Wacana Politik
The article explores how Indonesian Muslim-based parties are structurally responding to, and using, post-2014 polarization in coalition politics through party institutionalization. Party institutionalization is understood as the mediator that shapes how polarization results in coalition formation, internal organizational dynamics, and electoral performance. A comparative case study of PKB, PKS, PAN, and PPP is covered here, based on interviews with party elites and activists for Islamic organizations, along with secondary sources, electoral reports, and media coverage. Results indicate patterned variation across parties. PKB and PKS, with more cohesive constituencies and stronger organizational capacity, have been able to better exploit the impact …

Digitalization And Power In Southeast Asia: Rethinking Democracy And Development, Taqiya Arini Putri, Hamzah Turmudi
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Digitalization has become an inevitable driver of Southeast Asia’s economic development, simultaneously reshaping policy frameworks and reconfiguring regional power dynamics. Control over and access to digital infrastructure not only influence the distribution of power but also determine the extent to which digital transformation contributes to equitable and sustainable growth. This study, grounded in the theoretical lens of power relations, explores how digitalization initiatives intersect with political agendas and economic trajectories in the region. Methodologically, the research employs a literature-based analysis that conceptualizes digitalization as a non-human actor interacting with human agency in shaping development outcomes. The findings highlight that technological …

Statewide Sanctuary Policies And Female Homicide Rates, 2016–2021, Kaitlin M. Boyle, Sophia Shaiman, Veronica Valencia Gonzalez, Wendy Regoeczi
Faculty Publications
The current study examines whether state immigration enforcement policies, such as sanctuary policies that limit local police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, are associated with female homicide rates in the United States (2016–2021). We examine crude female homicide rates from the National Violent Death Reporting System (N = 244 state-years), which we stratify by race and ethnicity (Hispanic of all races, non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic White) and victim–suspect relationship (domestic vs. stranger homicide). State-years with policies that are more protective of immigrants were not associated with higher homicide rates for any group. Instead, state-years with these policies reported significantly lower …

After feedback from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine Office of Research, The pilot fund was structured after the University Libraries funds with some modifications including awarding $2,000 instead of $1500 towards a publication, allowing for publications in hybrid journals, and requiring multi-author team submissions. The fund was initially supported by $30,000 …
Affective Interdependence And Welfare, Aviad Heifetz, Enrico Minelli, Heracles M. Polemarchakis
Affective Interdependence And Welfare, Aviad Heifetz, Enrico Minelli, Heracles M. Polemarchakis
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Purely affective interaction allows the welfare of an individual to depend only the individual’s own action and on the profile of welfare levels of others. Under an assumption on the structure of mutual affection that we interpret as non-reinforcing mutual affection, we show that equilibria of affective interaction are Pareto optimal. Moreover, if purely affective interaction induces a standard game, then an equilibrium profile of actions is a Nash equilibrium of the induced game, and this Nash equilibrium and Pareto optimal profile of strategies is locally dominant.

The Aperspectival Playfulness Of Allan Leslie Combs, Zeke Floro
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This commemorative article reflects on the work of the late Dr. Allan Leslie Combs, a pioneering scholar in consciousness studies and an influential mentor. The essay argues that his scholarly writing, characterized by profound openness, heartfelt compassion, and sharp wit, represents an embodiment of the integral consciousness he writes about. Through a close reading of his essays and a personal reflection on his mentorship, the article connects his playful style to Jean Gebser’s concept of aperspectival consciousness and frames his humor within Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of divine “play” (lila), concluding that, for Combs, scholarship is an embodied practice …

An Unlikely Ironic Intervention: Reimagining The Fourteenth Amendment Of The United States Of America, Jennifer Paola Hernandez
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The project of interest is an intervention in the United States of America to reform racial and minority vote dilution, along with systemic entrenchment of power within gerrymandering, to undo the legacies of colonialism and racism within the states. Holding the government accountable to Constitutional and human rights is a patriotic act, even if many Americans don’t see it that way. Though often linked to the Global South, peacebuilding can also include institutional reform in non-war contexts. Peacebuilding processes are intended to improve society’s institutional structures for the betterment and sustainability of its constituents. I argue that the United States …

Building Bridges: Addressing The Conflict Between Law Enforcement And Black Americans For A Better Future, Tina Ann Collins
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
Abstract
This document serves as a call to action, emphasizing the ongoing conflict between law enforcement and minority communities. For years, there have been persistent allegations of unfair treatment—such as racial profiling, excessive use of force, and discriminatory policing practices—by some law enforcement officers towards minority and economically disadvantaged communities. With recent escalations in tensions, there is an even greater need for immediate and effective action to address these conflicts. Statistics reveal that in the United States, law enforcement officers have shot and killed an equal number of unarmed Caucasian and unarmed Black individuals, with each group having a count …
Conflict And Community Building In Waste Water Management: The Case Of Azrou Morocco, Jack V. Kalpakian
Conflict And Community Building In Waste Water Management: The Case Of Azrou Morocco, Jack V. Kalpakian
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
Climate change is forcing Morocco to institute a wide program of wastewater treatment. Despite legal and bureaucratic problems, the water is being reused directly or indirectly. But the construction of water treatment plants is leading to conflicts with farmers that depended on the untreated water and the use of treated water for green spaces and parks is also often viewed with suspicion. Using the case of the Azrou water treatment plant, this paper argues that while the infrastructure and technical adjustments to climate change have been effective, a gap in understanding between the water managers and the public they serve …

Sign Story: Shifting Discourse On ‘Signage’ In Progressive Grocer Magazine, Or The Supermarket Under Late Capitalism, Mario Rodriguez
Fast Capitalism
The supermarket industry is an “industry in flux.”[1] Modern grocery stores face multinational opposition at the millennium paralleling the extinction of neighborhood “mom-and-pop” stores with the rise of chain stores of the late 19th century (Strasser, 1989). With this large-scale reorganization of the grocery store industry comes a concomitant restructuring of what constitutes a grocery store itself—its architecture, services, and signs. The following study analyzes the evolving discourse on signs—or ‘signage,’ as it is called in the industry—in Progressive Grocer magazine over the 12-year period from 1996 to 2008. First, signs are contextualized in terms of the history of in-store …
