Unthinking Whiteness, Rethinking Democracy: Or Farewell To The Blonde Beast; Towards A Revolutionary Multiculturalism, Peter Mclaren Jan 1997

Unthinking Whiteness, Rethinking Democracy: Or Farewell To The Blonde Beast; Towards A Revolutionary Multiculturalism, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"The specific struggle that I wish to address is that of choosing against whiteness. Yet is it possible for us to choose against whiteness given that, historically, the practice of whiteness has brought about such a devastating denial, dissassembly, and destruction of other races? One would think that such a choice against whiteness would be morally self-evident. However, precisely because whiteness is so pervasive, it remains difficult to identify, to challenge, and to separate from our daily lives. My message is that we must create a new public sphere where the practice of whiteness is not only identified and analyzed …

Game Theory And Its Practical Applications, Angela M. Koos Jan 1997

Game Theory And Its Practical Applications, Angela M. Koos

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Game theory identifies players' optimal strategies in the face of interdependence and uncertainty . Games can be divided into two-person and n-person games, zero-sum and nonzero-sum games, and cooperative and non-cooperative games. Although this paper does not touch upon all of these aspects of game theory, it does offer a nice introduction of game theory and its applications for those who are not mathematical specialists.

Agricultural Transformation In Rural Western Kenya: The Maize Crop In The Mt. Elgon Region, 1930-1950, Jennifer L. Hoskinson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Between 1930 and 1950 the Kenyan colonial government began an experiment with maize by attempting to introduce it as a major cash crop in the Mt. Elgon geographical region of Western Kenya. Part of a larger campaign concerning African agriculture in general, the colonial government pursued various policies aimed at raising the price of African-grown maize and improving its production. Just as these policies began to provide an atmosphere favorable to African maize export growth, however, the colonial government reversed several of these policies. Using the case of maize in the Mt. Elgon region, this research illustrates how the failure …

Factors Leading To The Uprisings At Wounded Knee In 1890 & 1973: The Other Story, Andrew Amiotte

Nebraska Anthropologist

Throughout history, the American Indians have experienced maltreatment by the invasion of outside cultures and by people with power. As the Indians have been forced to move westward by the U.S. government, many treaties have been drawn up as a promise that the tribes would never again be invaded. These broken promises influenced the placing of the indigenous people onto reservations. Also, the Indians were forced to abandon their native way of life.

This paper discusses why forcing the Lakota Sioux to live on reservations and to adopt an Anglo culture led to great misery. This new way of life …

Embodying The Nation: Filipino Pictorial Moments Of The 1994 Gatt Treaty Debate, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

A fortnight after the Philippine Senate ratified the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GAT) and three days before the annual observance of national hero Jose Rizal's martyrdom, the intertwining of body and nation was given visual expression by a libidinous prankster. At around 10:45 AM of 27 December 1994, Manila's Channel 13 aired an abbreviated segment of a pornographic tape that was unlike any other, for it had been suitably edited to match the lyrics of the Philippine national anthem.' Conveniently tucked at the end of a two-yearald anti-drug abuse video clip, the tape's music …

Improving The Military/Media Relationship Through Education, Richard G. Steele

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Having trained journalists who are knowledgeable about military operations is a crucial first step to obtaining the trust of military leaders and improving military/media relations (Offley, 1994). The purpose of this study is to assess the progress, if any, that has been made since the Gulf War in better educating and training journalists to cover the military. It will also attempt to identify the obstacles, if any, that are preventing this education from taking place and recommend ways to overcome those obstacles.

A Proactive Approach To Juvenile Delinquency Utilizing The K.A.R.E. Program, Shae Cody Abram

Theses

This project will focus on the study of juvenile delinquency in America and the growing trend of juveniles between the age of 12 and 16 years old who are both the victims and perpetrators of criminal activity. It introduces a program called K.A.R.E., an acronym for Kids At Risk Education which is a proactive approach to addressing the root causes of juvenile delinquency.

Breakdowns in family life, neighborhood environments, socioeconomic, inequities, and peer group's pressures have contributed to this growing trend of youth crimes. Youth violence has become one of the leading causes of death for juveniles in this country. …

Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon

Honors Theses

The primary question underlying my research is, "What environmental factors, individual characteristics, behaviors, beliefs, and socialization factors enabled or ignited certain Jews to emerge as leaders within the concentration camps during WW II?" This study could reveal valuable information concerning why, how, and what types of leaders emerge in highly adverse and life threatening situations, and how some of these leaders were able to achieve success.

Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler Jan 1997

Civic Leadership : Meeting The Civic Needs Of American Communities, In Preperation For The 21st Century, Sara Zeigler

Honors Theses

In many areas of the United States, people complain about the leaders in their communities. Historically, when people think of 'leaders' in their communities, the majority of them are predominantly white, male and affluent. The American citizen believes that a portion of these leaders are shrouded in scandal, corruption, mistrust, exclusiveness, and power. The American citizen finds difficulty when trying to enter into the elite group of decision makers. Citizens and organizations accuse these leaders of making decisions that do not reflect the best interest of society, but rather benefit themselves. As a result, Americans call out for better leadership …

Higher Education In Rural America : A Study Of Northern Plains American Indian And Non-Indian Attitudes, Aspirations, Expectations, And Perceived Barriers, Marta Albertus Brosz Mohr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the need for educational research specific to rural populations of American Indians and their non-Indian neighbors. In order to provide answers to both theoretical and practical questions, a survey was conducted with a random sample of rural residents living within a twenty-five mile radius of a rural, tribal institution of higher education. The structured interviews gathered data regarding attitudes, aspirations, expectations, and perceived barriers. Analyses of the data indicate that this population has strong, positive attitudes toward higher education and aspires to a college education in spite of real and perceived barriers. This study does not support …

Growth And Development Of Street Gangs, Audrey D. Guymon

Masters Theses

This field study of the growth and development of street gangs was conducted in the spring of 1996 at a medium security prison utilizing a semi-structured interview with 69 inmates who were known present or former gang members. Since the sample was taken from a population of convicted felons, the results reflect the environment of the participants and may not be representative of gang members as a whole.

The field study determined that the majority of the participants came from two parent homes, had joined the gang between the ages of 9 and 15, lacked positive male role models, and …

The following thesis looks at possible influences of the Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB) on the formulation and implementation of Soviet foreign policy. The approach taken to analyze this relationship is to evaluate the activities of the KGB during significant historical events occurring during the Cold War. This thesis is divided into chapters, the first of which illustrates the political connection between the KGB and the key governing body of the Soviet Union, the Politburo. The three succeeding chapters individually cover a specific region of the world: Western Europe and the United States, Eastern Europe and Cuba, and the Middle East …

Manipulating The Ooda Loop: The Overlooked Role Of Information Resource Management In Information Warfare, Gregory M. Schechtman Dec 1996

Manipulating The Ooda Loop: The Overlooked Role Of Information Resource Management In Information Warfare, Gregory M. Schechtman

Theses and Dissertations

A ground-swell of interest in information as a weapon of warfare is growing within the U.S. armed services. Military strategists are looking at information as a tool to leverage our forces and make them irresistible in battle. Yet, there is little agreement as to what information warfare (IW) is, let alone how it is best fought. This fundamental disagreement is serving as an impediment to unified actions as the Air Force seeks its role in this arena. In particular, information resource management practitioners are questioning their role in supporting this mission. This thesis discusses limitations of existing information warfare interpretations …

Populist Entrepreneur: Douglas Bruce And The Tax And Government Limitation Moment In Colorado, 1986-1992, Daniel A. Smith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In 1992, Douglas Bruce, a non-practicing lawyer and landlord from Colorado Springs, Colorado, successfully "mobilized" popular support for Amendment 1, a ballot initiative that has restricted the taxing and spending powers of state and local governments in Colorado. For most Coloradans, "Douglas Bruce" is now a household name. Using a historical perspective to examine the role Bruce played in advancing Amendment 1, this study offers the analytic concepts of faux populism, populist entrepreneurs, and the public mood. Faux populism is the transposition of an ill-defined, but tangible public mood into a ready-made ballot initiative that is offered to the people …

Downsizing America In The Twentieth Century: A Sociological And Theoretical Analysis Of The Shrinking Middle Class, Terreea Lynne Adams Oct 1996

Downsizing America In The Twentieth Century: A Sociological And Theoretical Analysis Of The Shrinking Middle Class, Terreea Lynne Adams

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Downsizing is the process by which a firm decreases its number of employees, even during times of a strong economy, with the stated purpose of generating greater efficiency, productivity and of course, profit. The downsizing trend in the United States during the past three decades has resulted in an enormous shift in the structure of our society. Various theorists, sociologists and economists employ differing ways of looking at this downsizing trend and its effects on the largest segment of the population; that is, the middle class.

lndications of a healthy economy are low levels of unemployment and poverty-. Downsizing involves …
