Book Review: Killing The White Man's Indian: Reinventing Native Americans At The End Of The Twentieth Century By Fergus M. Bordewich, Tom Holm Apr 1998

Book Review: Killing The White Man's Indian: Reinventing Native Americans At The End Of The Twentieth Century By Fergus M. Bordewich, Tom Holm

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Fergus M. Bordewich's foray into Native American politics and identity is disturbing on a number of different levels. It is, on the one hand, a remarkably accurate look at Native American political dilemmas, frustrations, and achievements. On the other, it is a flawed survey of what it means to be Native American in the United States. It lacks a clear critical framework and races willy-nilly from one group to another, judging achievements on the basis of economic success or how the tribes fit into the hierarchical apparatus that runs the nation.

Bordewich is at his finest when dealing with the …

Review Of Indian Depredation Claims, 1796-1920 By Larry C. Skogen, Roger L. Nichols Apr 1998

Review Of Indian Depredation Claims, 1796-1920 By Larry C. Skogen, Roger L. Nichols

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Hoping to avoid violent incidents and possible warfare along its frontiers, the fledgling United States government established in 1796 a system for dealing with depredation claims. It provided the machinery through which both Indians and pioneers could apply for indemnity for losses incurred as a result of their dealings with each other. Despite such benign goals, the machinery seldom operated as envisioned. The claims process, too slow to prevent recurring violence, was so fraud-ridden that even honest claimants had to run a gauntlet of suspicious officials to have their cases considered. As a result, Larry Skogen states, throughout its entire …

On Being Agents Of God's Peace: Relationship And Roles Of The Roman Catholic Church In Croatia And The Serbian Orthodox Church In Ethnic Conflicts In Former Yugoslavia, Tatjana Peric

Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The civil strife, lasting from 1991 to the end of 1995, was …

Toward A Critical Demography Of Race And Ethnicity: Introduction Of The “R” Word, Hayward Derek Horton

Sociology Faculty Scholarship

Racism is a concept that has been all but ignored in the literature on racial and ethnic demography. This is in spite of the fact that racism has become increasingly salient in the context of the dramatic increase in racial and ethnic diversity in the United States. This paper formerly introduces racism into the lexicon of demography. Specifically, there are three objectives of this paper: 1) to critique the manner in which racism has been addressed in the area of racial and ethnic demography; 2) to provide a theoretical framework to facilitate the use of racism as a variable of …

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff Jan 1998

Not With A Bang, But A Whimper: The End Of The Archaic In Northeast Texas, Maynard B. Cliff

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Archaic period in Northeast Texas lasted for thousands of years and, if this length of time can be taken as any indication, it was as an extremely successful adaptation to the Holocene environment of North America. Accepting this view, however, begs the question: "why and how did the Archaic period come to an end?"

This paper uses the term "Archaic" to describe a "way of life" (see Story 1990:211), and in this sense, the Archaic period in eastern North America may be seen as a "tradition," characterized by small, band-level societies, marked by an economy based on "hunting, fishing, …
