Archaeological Investigations At A Spanish Colonial Site, (41ka26-B) Karnes County, Texas, Cynthia L. Tennis

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In July, 1998, the Center for Archaeology Research (CAR) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) was awarded a contract by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for artifact analysis and report composition on archaeological investigations at a Spanish Colonial period site in Karnes County in south Texas. The data for this analysis and interpretation was recovered during 1985 TxDOT excavations at site 41KA26.

Forty-five test units and seven shovel tests were excavated resulting in the recovery of approximately 4000 artifacts including over 1000 peives of animal bone, 445 Native American pottery sherds, 404 pieces of Spanish ceramics, …

The Stability Of The Dniester Moldovan Republic: A Post-Election Analysis, Oazu Nantoi, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu, Marion T. Doss, Jr. Jan 2001

The Stability Of The Dniester Moldovan Republic: A Post-Election Analysis, Oazu Nantoi, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The communists' electoral victory and the elevation of Voronin to the Presidency drew Moldova closer to the Russian Federation and raised new questions about the stability of the Dniester Moldovan Republic.

The existence of the DMR no longer serves Russian interests as it did in the past.

The prospects for confrontation between the DMR and Moldova are greater today as a result of the Communist Party victory.

While President Voronin has privately expressed his disdain for the DMR leadership, he seems willing to accept the existence of the DMR.

By the latter part of the past decade, the DMR existed …

Psychological Warfare, Japanese, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2001

Psychological Warfare, Japanese, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Japanese psychological warfare operations were modeled on campaigns conducted by the British in World War I and the Germans in World War II. The Germans established a branch of their propaganda ministry in Japan, which resulted in close psychological warfare collaboration between these two Axis powers. As a result, their propaganda themes, such as both nations having divine or semidivine rulers and being populated by super races whose destiny was to rule the world, were strikingly parallel.

Bushido, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2001

Bushido, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Bushido was originally a code of conduct for the samurai, the warrior class of feudal Japan. The term literally means "the way [do] of the warrior [bushi]." Basic principles of Bushido developed during and in the centuries of warfare before the Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333). The term came into normal usage during the stable Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867), when the samurai were subordinated tot he will of the state and the literary classic Hagakure (1716) was written.

A Social History Of Postwar Animal Protection, Bernard Unti, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 2001

A Social History Of Postwar Animal Protection, Bernard Unti, Andrew N. Rowan

State of the Animals 2001

After World War II, the animal protection movement enjoyed the revival that we discuss in this chapter. Contemporary scholarship suggests that social movements are more or less continuous, shifting from periods of peak activity to those of relative decline. The renaissance of animal protection during the past half century involved several distinct phases of evolution. Such divisions are discretionary, but they can clarify important trends. This analysis relies on a three-stage chronology in considering the progress of postwar animal protection, one that emphasizes revival, mobilization and transformation, and consolidation of gains.

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway Jan 2001

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Libraries

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro Jan 2001

Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro

Publications and Research

Although the Internet provides access to a wealth of information, there is little, if any, control over the quality of that information. Side-by-side with reliable information, one finds disinformation, misinformation, and hoaxes. The authors of this paper discuss numerous examples of fabricated historical information on the Internet (ranging from denials of the Holocaust to personal vendettas), offer suggestions on how to evaluate websites, and argue that these fabrications can be incorporated into bibliographic instruction classes.

Toward Transformative Dialogue, Kenneth J. Gergen, S. Mcnamee, F. Barrett Jan 2001

Toward Transformative Dialogue, Kenneth J. Gergen, S. Mcnamee, F. Barrett

Psychology Faculty Works

Drawing from a social constructionist theoretical orientation, and a range of congenial practices, we propose the concept of transformative dialogue which stresses relational responsibility, self-expression, affirmation, coordination, reflexivity, and the co-creation of new realities. We see conversational moves that accomplish these aims as highly promising; at the same time there is no attempt in the present article to suggest these as ultimate solutions to employ in situations of conflict. The present is an attempt to generate a potentially useful vocabulary rather than a strict set of rules for negotiating among incommensurate realities.

"On The Make": Campaign Funding And The Corrupting Of The American Judiciary, David R. Barnhizer Jan 2001

"On The Make": Campaign Funding And The Corrupting Of The American Judiciary, David R. Barnhizer

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The thesis offered here is that the cost of judicial campaigns has reached a level where both candidates and sitting judges are shaping their behavior to attract financial and other support. This not only results in distortion of judicial selection by repelling meritorious potential candidates who are unwilling to compromise their principles, but in the capture of judges by special interests willing to finance judicial campaigns. Some argue that the great increase in contributions to judicial candidates simply means that contributors are giving to candidates they feel certain will support their positions. To some extent this is certainly true. But …

The Dialectics Of Fashion: Gender And Politics In Yemen, Sheila Carapico Jan 2001

The Dialectics Of Fashion: Gender And Politics In Yemen, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

The situation of Yemeni women is complicated and contradictory. On the one hand, compared with relatively fashionforward Mediterranean Arabs, or even their affluent sisters in the Gulf, Yemeni women appear to be especially oldfashioned. One rarely sees a Yemeni woman outdoors bareheaded, and in the capital, Sana'a, most women cover their faces in public. Yet outward appearances can be misleading. While it is tempting to assume that women "still" veil because "tradition" tells them to, it is simply wrong to conclude that "traditionally" all women were secluded in their homes, or that how they dress now tells us much about …

Looking Under The Hood And Tinkering With Voter Cynicism: Ross Perot And “Perspective By Incongruity”, Mari Boor Tonn, Valerie A. Endress Jan 2001

Looking Under The Hood And Tinkering With Voter Cynicism: Ross Perot And “Perspective By Incongruity”, Mari Boor Tonn, Valerie A. Endress

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines Ross Perot’s 1992 presidential bid as a comic catalyst for a reinvigorated view of civic responsibility. Despite the Texas maverick’s political naiveté and penchant for miscalculation, his very presence in the campaign reanimated Americans’ conception of grassroots democracy. By examining important and previously unexplored distinctions between planned and unplanned incongruity, we probe the means by which Perot invited consideration of alternative political perspectives and offered an appealing glimpse into a dormant, more deeply held democratic ideal.

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith Jan 2001

The Case For The Electromagnetic Commons An Ecocultural Intervention In Australian Spectrum Management, Scott Smith

Theses : Honours

In the globalised world of the electronic, information age, there is one resource that increasingly appears to play a pertinent role in the future of our communications systems. The electromagnetosphere is an ecological region that is largely unacknowledged outside of scientific circles: it is one of those naturally-occurring phenomena that we simply take for granted. But with developments in communications technology we have learnt to tap the energies of this natural phenomenon, and in tum have developed a complex system of management and regulation where a 'property-mimicking' regime of allocation and licensing is in place. There are movements however, to …

A Study Of Officer's Use Of Leadership Skills Learned In The Navy's Intermediate Officer Leadership Course, William F. Conroy Edd Jan 2001

A Study Of Officer's Use Of Leadership Skills Learned In The Navy's Intermediate Officer Leadership Course, William F. Conroy Edd

Dissertations

The U.S. Navy's present-day leadership training program, referred to as the Leadership Continuum, provides for leadership training for all enlisted personnel and officers at initial entry into the naval service and at designated career milestones until retirement. The Leadership Continuum evolved from a series of formal Navy leadership training programs dating back to the late 1970s. The Navy has expended a considerable amount of fiscal resources over the past 20 years in an attempt to provide quality leadership training to its personnel. However, past studies have revealed that leadership training course graduates are provided with little to no incentives by …

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr. Jan 2001

Religious Brotherhoods In Chechnya, Yavus Akhmadov, Stephen R. Bowers, Marion T. Doss, Jr.

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sufism is one of the most important religious movements in Chechnya. It is significant because it is a popular rallying point and, to the external world, it is not obvious who is or is not a member of these clandestine brotherhoods. Sufism gives its adherents an organizational basis that is somewhat like that of the early communist party. There are twenty-seven religious movements operating in Chechnya today. Kunta Hadji is one of the most important of these and is associated with the Qadiriya brotherhood, generally regarded as the second most important of the Soviet-era brotherhoods.

Following the first Chechen war, …

Like A Banana Tree : Towards A Model Of Children In Disasters : An Exploration Of An Anthropological Problem, Jennie Anne Ricarda Marten Jan 2001

Like A Banana Tree : Towards A Model Of Children In Disasters : An Exploration Of An Anthropological Problem, Jennie Anne Ricarda Marten

Theses : Honours

There is currently an emerging literature on the anthropology of disasters, and also an emergent literature on the new anthropology of childhood and children. Despite an extensive search, no significant body of literature on the anthropology of children in natural event based disasters could be found. A central focus of this thesis will be interrogate this gap through a documentary search, to ascertain what factors might influence the absence of children in the anthropology of disasters. To achieve this, the study defines and conceptualizes both the anthropology of disasters and the anthropology of children. Recent research shows that children are …

I Was Just Doin' My Duty: The Influence Of Social And Cultural Conceptions On American Participants In The Second World War, Margaret E. Williamson Jan 2001

I Was Just Doin' My Duty: The Influence Of Social And Cultural Conceptions On American Participants In The Second World War, Margaret E. Williamson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As the generation of Americans who fought World War II reached retirement age, a sense of nostalgia about their unforgettable days of fighting a common and undeniably evil enemy began to permeate American popular culture. This perception reinforced the concept of the Allies as the protectors of the world from tyrannical forces and leaders. Such an assessment of the conflict by Americans stemmed from the atrocities committed by Germans against Jews and other minorities. Furthermore, the unexpected attack on American territory by the Japanese justified the sacrifices made by millions of Americans. Nearly sixty years after the initiation of United …

Juror's Perception Of Recovered Memory, Type Of Trauma And Adult Witness Demeanor, Donna Marie Vigilante Jan 2001

Juror's Perception Of Recovered Memory, Type Of Trauma And Adult Witness Demeanor, Donna Marie Vigilante

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

College students judged the testimony in a civil trial in which a childhood memory had been recovered after 20 years. Participants were 108 students (n = 79 female and 29 male) enrolled in undergraduate psychology courses. The design was a 2 X 2 X 2 between subjects factorial design which investigated effects of the type of incident (sexual abuse/hit-and-run), how the memory was recovered (therapy/wedding), and type of testimony (assertive/emotional). The study determined that mock jurors were likely to perceive the plaintiff's testimony as credible when she testified she was sexually abused as a child rather than when she was …

Changes In Navy Leadership Theory And Practice: Post-Vietnam, Nicholas A. Trongale Edd Jan 2001

Changes In Navy Leadership Theory And Practice: Post-Vietnam, Nicholas A. Trongale Edd

Dissertations

Since the Vietnam War, Navy leadership theory and practice has changed, becoming more like current civilian leadership theory and practice than traditional leadership of old. Indicators of this change have been seen in journal writings, the new Navy performance evaluation structure, current Navy leadership training, and by the birth of a Navy Command Leadership School. This study was designed to explore the evolution and recent history of the Navy's leadership theory and practice for indications of change. Combining a qualitative and quantitative methodology, this study used a 5-point Likert-type scale survey that included a written comments section. Over 70% of …

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2001

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The question of the state's role in the control of sponsorship of education is addressed in the light of liberal political principles designed to keep peace and enforce toleration in culturally diverse societies. Some contemporary, self-described liberal philosophers argue for a much more substantial educational role for the state than liberal principles will really allow. Brian Barry's argument for that role assumes that the state can prescribe answers to controversial questions regarding the truth and the good life in which a truly liberal state would take no interest. Stephen Macedo is more accommodating to religious diversity than Barry, but his …

The Internet In Turkey And Pakistan: A Comparative Analysis, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman Dec 2000

The Internet In Turkey And Pakistan: A Comparative Analysis, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

The Global Diffusion of the Internet Project was initiated in 1997 to study the diffusion and absorption of the Internet to, and within, many diverse countries. This research has resulted in an ongoing series of reports and articles that have developed an analytic framework for evaluating the Internet within countries and applied it to more than 25 countries. (Seehttp://mosaic.unomaha.edu/gdi.html for links to some of these reports and articles.)

The current report applies the analytic framework to compare and contrast the Internet experiences of Turkey and Pakistan, through mid-2000. Although historically these countries have not been closely related, there are …

Securitizing Russia: Discursive Practices Of The Baltic States, Øyvind Jæger Nov 2000

Securitizing Russia: Discursive Practices Of The Baltic States, Øyvind Jæger

Peace and Conflict Studies

The author argues that the security situation of the Baltic countries cannot be separated from the way the Balts themselves speak of security. This is a discourse of danger producing insecurity in pursuit of security. Moreover, this article is a study of identity by demonstrating how Baltic security issues are constituted by discourses of danger revolving around Russian Otherness and European Sameness. In conclusion, the following aspects are addressed: the prospects for the coming together of East and West in the Baltic Sea Region – and NATO’s role in this process – and whether this process will come to ease …

Literary Skinheads? Writing From The Right In Reunified Germany, Jay Julian Rosellini Oct 2000

Literary Skinheads? Writing From The Right In Reunified Germany, Jay Julian Rosellini

Purdue University Press Books

"Literary Skinheads? is a very nuanced, meticulously researched and vividly written study of a series of important debates in German literary circles since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rapid political transformations that have accompanied German unification. No other book in the English-speaking world offers such a comprehensive survey of the legacy of radical conservative ideas in German political life. Rosellini not only offers trenchant interpretations of major political controversies of the last decade in Germany, but he also provides the necessary background information needed to make sense of these important public debates."
