Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald
Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Evolutionary theory, in consort with Marxism and processualism, provides new insights into the interpretation of grave-good variation. Processual interpretations of burial sites in the American Southwest cite age, sex, or social rank as the main determinants of burial-good variation. Marxist theorists suggest that mortuary ritual mediates social tension between an egalitarian mindset and an existing social inequality. Evolutionary theory provides a supplementary explanatory framework. Recent studies guided by kin-selection theory suggest that humans grieve more for individuals of high reproductive value and genetic relatedness. Ethnographic examples also show that individuals mourn more intensively and, thus, place more social emphasis on …

Review Of Women In Ancient America By Karen Olsen Bruhns And Karen E. Stothert, Marcel Kornfeld
Review Of Women In Ancient America By Karen Olsen Bruhns And Karen E. Stothert, Marcel Kornfeld
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
It is well known that the role and contribution of women to prehistory has long been ignored or undervalued. Because women represent approximately one half of humanity, have done so in the past, and make a contribution by sheer numbers alone, this book is a necessary attempt to remedy the shortcomings in the writing of American prehistory as it pertains to women and gender. The authors state in its preface that their book is "an introduction to the study of women in the American past."
The first chapter lays out the method for the study of women and gender in …

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
I turn to Judith Butler to clarify my term corporate globalization trouble as well as to explain why this trouble should be situated in gendered terms regarding power, visibility, and subjectivity inequities. [1] Butler describes deviant gender identities failing to coincide with the matrix of intelligibility: precisely because certain kinds of 'gender identities' fail to conform to those norms of cultural intelligibility, they appear only as developmental failures or logical impossibilities from within that domain. Their persistence and proliferation, however, provide critical opportunities to expose the limits and regulatory aims of that domain of intelligibility and, …

Protecting Public Surface Transportation Against Terrorism And Serious Crime: Continuing Research On Best Security Practices, Mti Report 01-07, Brian M. Jenkins
Mineta Transportation Institute
Terrorist attacks on commercial aviation had declined significantly after reaching a high point in the 1970s. The devastating consequences of the four coordinated hijackings and deliberate crashes of three of the planes into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001—an event unprecedented in the annals of terrorism—have wiped out all sense of progress and focused national attention on aviation security. Meanwhile, terrorists have continued to attack public surface transportation worldwide with no indication of abatement in these attacks.1 With large-scale indiscriminate violence clearly the reality of contemporary terrorism and growing …

Terrorism Overview, Mti Report 01-14, Brian M. Jenkins
Mineta Transportation Institute
Recent global events make it clear that the threat of terrorism is one to be taken seriously. For those who are attempting to kill in quantity and kill indiscriminately, surface transportation offers the ideal target. Because of the public nature of mass transit, there is often little security with no checkpoints as is the case with airports. The practice of terrorism has moved in varying directions in recent years, depending upon different forms of transportation systems and venues of operation. On the positive side, terrorist attacks on commercial aviation have declined significantly after reaching a high point in the 1970s, …

War And Democracy, Gregory Hess, Athanasios Orphanides
War And Democracy, Gregory Hess, Athanasios Orphanides
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
We present a general equilibrium model of conflict to investigate whether the prevalence of democracy is sufficient to foster the perpetual peace hypothesized by Immanuel Kant and whether the world would necessarily become more peaceful as more countries adopt democratic institutions. Our exploration suggests that neither hypothesis is true. The desire of incumbent leaders with unfavorable economic performance to hold on to power generates an incentive to initiate conflict and salvage their position—with some probability. An equilibrium with positive war frequency is sustained even if all nations were to adopt representative democratic institutions and even in the absence of an …

Landmines In The Sand: The Falkland Islands, Juan Carlos Ruan, Jill Macheme
Landmines In The Sand: The Falkland Islands, Juan Carlos Ruan, Jill Macheme
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The Falkland Islands contain approximately 117 mine fields. Many of the mines were remotely delivered. About 80 percent of these landmines are hidden beneath sandy beaches and peat, which can shift a mine’s position and make detection and removal very difficult.
