Deminers Facing More Responsibilities In Developmental Phase, Leng Mouly
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
In Cambodia, mine action is no longer only about saving lives; it is also about supporting development efforts. However, in the context of development, the quality of mine clearance will be scrutinized. A recent mine accident during road construction has raised new issues involving the responsibilities of deminers.
Changing Structure Of The Arms Trade: A Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella
Changing Structure Of The Arms Trade: A Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The global arms trade should be understood not as a market but as a network, one that shares some important properties with networked forms of organization studied by sociologists. I make this argument and then employ quantitative methods developed for social network analysis in an effort to describe the evolving structure of the arms trade network since the end of World War II. That structure has changed significantly over the past fifty years. It became less dense in the early years of the cold war as newly independent states joined the society of states, but had yet to develop many …

The Influence Of Byzantium On The Slavs: Bulgaria And Kievan Rus, 512-1055, Michael A. Lushbaugh
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of Bulgaria and Ukraine can be traced to the middle ages. During this time period the migrant groups of Bulgars and Varangians settled into those regions and began to create homogenous states that still stand to this day. But the question remains, how did these two nomadic tribal groups pull together a state out of a patchwork of indigenous tribes and ethnic groups? The answer can be found in examining the role of another well established state in the Balkans, the empire of Byzantium. But just how far did the Byzantine Greeks go 1n influencing the development of …

Russia's Struggle For Democracy: The Role Of The United States, 1993-1998., Justin R. Clardie
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aiding the successful transition of Russia to a free-market, democratic society was one of the key goals of the Clinton Administration's foreign policy. This study looks at U.S. policy toward Russia during the period of 1993 to 1998 and examines the effectiveness ofthat policy. A number of primary sources, such as speeches and U.S. Department of State dispatches, were used as well as a variety of secondary sources. Through the examination of these sources the conclusion was reached that U.S. policy toward Russia during this time frame was not effective. Instead of the desired effect of promoting and consolidating democracy, …
Technology And Time, Jon Vanwieren
Technology And Time, Jon Vanwieren
Masters Theses
This thesis sets out to further reveal the technology and time interrelationship in human society. It is through an investigation of an array of sociological, theoretical, philosophical, historical and artistic responses to modernity that this relationship is explored. Primary analytic focus is placed on two contemporary authors who have addressed the technology and time relationship. These authors are Manuel Castells and Paul Virilio. Castells and Virilio offer two distinct portraits of the modem-technological world. By contrasting these authors' projects, methods and intellectual heritage, the question of technology and time is further scrutinized. Advanced here is an argument that time is …

Press Controls In Wartime: The Legal, Historical, And Institutional Context, Stephen D. Cooper
Press Controls In Wartime: The Legal, Historical, And Institutional Context, Stephen D. Cooper
Communications Faculty Research
News coverage of warfare poses a dilemma for social systems with a free press, such as the United States. In an era of high-tech weaponry and nearly instantaneous global communications, conflict is inevitable between the obligation of the press to inform the general public and the obligation of the military to successfully conduct war. The importance of secrecy to the conduct of warfare heightens the issue in the current counterterrorism operations. The competitive advantage of live coverage raises the stakes in a crowded media market. The military’s control over newsgathering during the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War set off a controversy …
The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom
The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom
Political Science Faculty Scholarship
How have indigenous societies responded to the changes taking place around them as development proceeds, and how have they been able to retain or regain control over resource management and their own forms of development? This article examines the experiences of the Kunas and the Ngöbe of Panama as they attempt to survive and adapt to development imposed by a dominant society. These indigenous societies have adapted to different ecological settings on the small isthmus, have been faced with different kinds of challenges to their control of lands and resources, and have responded in different ways. The first section contains …
Review Of Gold Rush: The Black Hills Story Compiled By John D. Mcdermott, John E. Miller
Review Of Gold Rush: The Black Hills Story Compiled By John D. Mcdermott, John E. Miller
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Black Hills Gold Rush, instigated by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 1874 expedition to the Hills confirming that there was gold there "among the roots of the grass," was an event important to both the nation and the future state of South Dakota, not to mention to the Native Americans who had inhabited the area for centuries. Watson Parker's Gold in the Black Hills (1966) provided an excellent account of the gold rush, and John D. McDermott, the compiler and one of the authors of this volume, acknowledges his pioneering work on the subject. This collection of essays succeeds …

Discourse Of Evil: Speaking Terrorism To Silence, Galip Isen
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
That the impact of terrorism is equal to the reaction it elicits may be a truism, but one that deserves further probing as demonstrated by the way that reaction is put to use politically. Whichever of 150-strong definitions [1] is accepted, the consequential aspect of terrorism is ideational: the assault targets the concept and experience of normal in the lives and minds of ordinary people. Several writers argue that terrorism is generally inefficacious, strategically counterproductive and mostly unsuccessful as a method of attaining socio-political objectives [2]. However, overall public response to 11 September 2001 has been so profound …

Homeland (In)Security : Roots And Displacement, From New York, To Toronto, To Salt Lake City, Marusya Bociurkiw
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
On September 11, 2001, broadcast and print media around the world narrated the destruction of New York City's World Trade Center and the deaths of thousands of its occupants. This paper will examine the ways in which television and its appendages (the telephone, the internet, the newspaper) operated to organize the discursive meanings of this traumatic event. I will propose that between September 11 and February 2002's Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, ideas about home, roots and rootedness (and their Others: foreignness, homelessness, nomadicism) operated as a discursive mapping of that which could otherwise not be …
The State Of American Federalism, 2002–2003: Division Replaces Unity, Dale Krane
The State Of American Federalism, 2002–2003: Division Replaces Unity, Dale Krane
Public Administration Faculty Publications
The national unity formed last year in response to terrorism soon vanished as more typical political infighting returned. Although overshadowed by the buildup to and the conduct of a second war against Iraq, political issues grounded in the nation's federal character contributed to a rise in divisiveness. The mid-term elections of 2002 and redistricting battles in several states drove partisanship to new heights. The continued sluggishness of the nation's economy also exacerbated interparty bickering. Republicans controlled the White House and both houses of Congress, yet some of the president's policy initiatives encountered more serious resistance in his own party than …

Imperialism & Globalization: Lessons From Frank Herbert's Dune, Kevin Williams
Imperialism & Globalization: Lessons From Frank Herbert's Dune, Kevin Williams
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
These are the words of The Preacher (a character in Frank Herbert's Children of Dune who is simultaneously the metaphorical reincarnation of the fallen prophet, Muad'Dib, and the self-exiled Emperor, Paul Atreides) as he addresses the masses enslaved by their devotion to his messianic Empire. These words, culled from the pages of science fiction, are more than mere exposition from Herbert's narrative, they point toward several important conditions facing the political world today. These conditions concern certain failures of democracy and effects of globalization spawned, in part, by an intensification of imperialist expansion in the name of democracy.

Accounts Of Fighting And Cannibalism In Eastern New Guinea During The Missionary Contact Period, 1877-1888, As Told To Charles Abel, David Wetherell
Accounts Of Fighting And Cannibalism In Eastern New Guinea During The Missionary Contact Period, 1877-1888, As Told To Charles Abel, David Wetherell
Pacific Studies
Field notes by missionary Charles W. Abel of the London Missionary Society, contained in two little-known handwritten documents, describe traditional warfare customs, including treatment of captives and cannibalism among the peoples of the Milne Bay/China Strait region of southeastern New Guinea, as told to him by Paulo Dilomi and other informants. The editor transcribes these notes here and theorizes that Abel's knowledge of these activities provides context for the missionary's derogatory attitude toward the "savage" Papuan, in contrast to the perspectives of later observers including other missionaries and anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski.

Masters Theses
This thesis investigates the life and role of the African American Single Mother (AASM) in America as the topic of this study. The AASM in this study will voice her experiences. The point of view of this thesis is that the AASM is in the unique position of being the only person able to convey facts about her life from her personal perspective. Through the voice of the AASM, this researcher will develop a written document which describes her life experiences and roles in which she operates in her family. This study will give the view of life of AASM's …
Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier
Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Recent work in Amazonian religion, sociality, and ecological adaptation have addressed the interrelationships among animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping. In this article, I attempt to reconcile these works with the beliefs and behaviors of the Guajá of eastern Amazonia. I argue that the specific configuration of animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping among the Guajá relates to their social organization and mode of production as hunter-gatherers.
Obras recentes tratando da religião, socialidade, e adaptação ecológica na Amazonia têm demonstrado as relações entre o animismo, o canibalismo, e a prática de criar animais de estimação. Neste trabalho, eu tento reconciliar estas obras com as …
