A New Scale To Measure War Attitudes: Construction And Predictors, Erin C. Dupuis, Ellen S. Cohn

Psychology

Attitudes people have toward war in general have been of recent interest due to the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq. The purpose of this research was to develop a scale to measure war attitudes and to investigate factors that may influence these attitudes. In the first study, a scale was developed that measured war attitudes. Three factors emerging from the War Attitude Scale were labeled ethics of war, support for war, and affect about war. Patriotism-nationalism, authoritarianism, social criticism, belief in war outcomes, support of the president, and gender were found to be significant predictors of war …

Bombing At The Box Office: Reviewers’ Responses To Agnosticism In Bill Maher’S Religulous, Rick Clifton Moore Apr 2011

Bombing At The Box Office: Reviewers’ Responses To Agnosticism In Bill Maher’S Religulous, Rick Clifton Moore

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines reviewers' reactions to Bill Maher’s documentary film Religulous as a way of beginning a discussion of media and religious hegemony. Hegemony theory posits that dominant ideology typically trumps contesting views, even when the latter do manage to leak through the system. Given this, one might expect that film reviewers serve as a second line of defense for entrenched worldviews. Here, however, a thematic analysis of reviews from major national newspapers reveals that critics provided only slight support to traditional religious views Maher challenges in his filmic plea for agnosticism.

Irish Corned Beef: A Culinary History, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, Pádraic Óg Gallagher Apr 2011

Irish Corned Beef: A Culinary History, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire, Pádraic Óg Gallagher

Articles

This article proposes that a better knowledge of culinary history enriches all culinary stakeholders. The article will discuss the origins and history of corned beef in Irish cuisine and culture. It outlines how cattle have been central to the ancient Irish way of life for centuries, but were cherished more for their milk than their meat. In the early modern period, with the decline in the power of the Gaelic lords, cattle became and economic commodity that was exported to England. The Cattle Acts of 1663 and 1667 affected the export trade of live cattle and led to a growing …

The Language Of Action: A Creative Study Of Resistance To Slavery From West Africa To The Days Across The Sea, Kali Block-Steele

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The goal of this paper is to study one of the lesser known aspects of the Transatlantic Slave Trade: resistance. Before the discussion of resistance, a brief history of the trade can be found. The focus on active resistance to slavery both on an individual and collective level begins on the African continent and continues through the Middle Passage, finishing with a discussion on forms of resistance in the Americas. There is a second part encompassing some creative writings inspired by the formation of this paper.

Change Comes With Time: Substantive Interpretation Of Non-Proportional Hazards In Event History Analysis, Amanda A. Licht Apr 2011

Change Comes With Time: Substantive Interpretation Of Non-Proportional Hazards In Event History Analysis, Amanda A. Licht

Faculty Publications

While methodologists have provided us ample notice of both the problem of non-proportional hazards and the means of correcting them, less attention has been paid to the post-estimation interpretation. The suggested inclusion of time interactions in our models is more than a statistical fix: these corrections alter the substantive meaning and interpretation of results. Framing the issue as a specific case of multiplicative-interaction modeling, I provide detailed discussion of the problem of non-proportional hazards and present several appropriate means of interpreting both the substantive impact and the significance of variables whose effects may change over time.

An Exploration Of A First Year Experience Course To Meet The Needs Of Veteran And Other Non-Traditional College Students, Amy C. Wise

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Over the last several years, the number of veterans returning to college campuses has steadily increased. Many veterans are taking advantage of education benefits offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and have been out of school for a number of years. A number of veterans are considered nontraditional students, and the responsibilities of being a parent, an employee, a husband or wife, and college student can be overwhelming. In recent years, the economic recession has also added financial hardships to the already full agenda of many of these students. Throughout the nation, colleges have created programs that will assist …

Correcting 60 Years Of Development Failure: The Potential Of Scaling Up In Addressing Development Ineffectiveness, Jossif Ezekilov Apr 2011

Correcting 60 Years Of Development Failure: The Potential Of Scaling Up In Addressing Development Ineffectiveness, Jossif Ezekilov

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For more than 60 years, development organizations have poured billions of dollars of aid money into developing countries with the hopes that their projects will increase economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve the health status of people in developing countries. Yet, the result has been one of general failure; despite 2 trillion dollars worth of aid money delivered by organizations, there is little progress to show for it. In some cases, development projects have even caused more harm to a developing country than good. The ineffective,” top down” approach of the last 60 years must be ceased and a new …

Kwesukesukela, or “a long time ago,” there was a beautiful woman who lived by the ocean with her husband and two small children. The woman’s name was Mazanendaba. Although she lived a life full of happiness, Mazanendaba came to realize with time that something important was missing: there were no stories. No stories for mothers and grandmothers to tell their children. No stories to inspire joy and ease sorrow. No stories to enrich the mind and nurture the soul. Determined to find stories in a world without any, Mazanendaba left her beloved home in search of a new story to …

Comics As A Cognitive Training Medium For Expert Decision Making, Amber Nalu Apr 2011

Comics As A Cognitive Training Medium For Expert Decision Making, Amber Nalu

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Experts such as military commanders must make decisions quickly and under deadly conditions. A variety of cognitive training media exist, from Powerpoint to virtual reality (VR) simulations; however, there are alternative media that have not yet been comprehensively studied for expert decision making training. In this study, the researcher has examined the use of comics as an alternative to current cognitive training media. In Experiment 1, naval submariners were shown a text-based medium or comic strip and asked to make a decision about the scenario after viewing. The scenario was derived from a situation that submariners were somewhat familiar with …

Dispersion Or Re-Segregation: A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Public Policies And Their Impact On Urban African American Mobility, Brandi Lynette Blessett Apr 2011

Dispersion Or Re-Segregation: A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Public Policies And Their Impact On Urban African American Mobility, Brandi Lynette Blessett

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

This study seeks to test Hirsch's second ghetto thesis in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Hirsch suggested that the role of government, public policies, and administrative discretion were responsible for the re-segregation of African Americans into second ghetto communities in Chicago. Many scholars have used Hirsch's framework to explain ghetto formation. This investigation seeks to extend the literature in several ways. First, several national policies were investigated to determine their impact on African American mobility in Baltimore: the Housing Act of 1937 (public housing), the Housing Act of 1949 (urban renewal), and the Interstate Highway Act of 1956 (transportation). Second, …

Militares Empresarios: Approaches To Studying The Military As An Economic Actor, Kristina Mani Apr 2011

Militares Empresarios: Approaches To Studying The Military As An Economic Actor, Kristina Mani

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the twentieth century, Latin American militaries developed economic industries, organised businesses, and provided security and development assistance in lieu of the state. Despite shifts to democracy and the market, the military remains an economic actor in many countries in the region. This article seeks to open debate and suggest ways to approach the subject theoretically. It examines the concept of military entrepreneurs and scholarship on the topic, and then suggests how three approaches from the domain of comparative politics - rational, structural and cultural - can be useful to develop theoretical frameworks for studying the military's role in the …

Developing Countries, Vaccine Access And Influenza Outbreaks: Ethics And Global Health Governance When Facing A Pandemic, Shawn Smallman Mar 2011

Developing Countries, Vaccine Access And Influenza Outbreaks: Ethics And Global Health Governance When Facing A Pandemic, Shawn Smallman

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The threat posed by influenza pandemics raises serious ethical issues, as well as questions of global health governance. In order to create pre-pandemic vaccines, global health authorities need access to virus from regional outbreaks. But because the countries where these outbreaks occur are unlikely to benefit from the vaccine, they are sometimes reluctant to share this seed stock, and may try to make proprietary arrangements with pharmaceutical companies, as briefly occurred in Indonesia. Although these arrangements may increase developing countries' access to vaccine, they hamper the global cooperation necessary to prepare for influenza outbreaks. Developing countries, in contrast, point to …

Coe's The Maya, and Richard E.W. Adams's Prehistoric Mesoamerica. The specific parts of the narratives analyzed were the origins of agriculture, ceramic technology, writing, and monumental architecture. Changes in metaphorical language …

A Framework For The Measurement Of Simulated Behavior Performance, Christopher M. Cooper Mar 2011

A Framework For The Measurement Of Simulated Behavior Performance, Christopher M. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Recent development in video games, simulation, training, and robotics has seen a push for greater visual and behavioral realism. As the reliance on high fidelity models in the education, training, and simulation communities to provide information used for strategic and tactical decisions rises, the importance of accuracy and credibility of simulated behavior increases. Credibility is typically established through verification and validation techniques. Increased interest exists in bringing behavior realism to the same level as the visual. Thus far validation process for behavioral models is unclear. With real world behavior a major goal, this research investigates the validation problem and provides …

Combating Biological Terrorism From Imported Food, Jeffrey S. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

There is a threat that a terrorist or terrorist organization will use access to the US food supply to kill or sicken Americans by contaminating imported food products from Mexico. The food that Americans eat is coming more and more often from foreign countries such as Mexico. Foodborne diseases infect nearly fifty million people in the US each year, resulting in over three thousand deaths. There are many terrorist organizations that would like to deliberately contaminate American food. Drug cartels and terrorist organizations currently operate in Mexico, one of the leading food importers into the US. The purpose of this …

The Timeless Speech: A Close Textual Analysis Of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Inaugural, Amanda Rene Biane

John F. Kennedy's inaugural is a rhetorical masterpiece. Our world has aged forty-nine years and within those years the threats have remained the same with a few minor tweaks.  Kennedy's inaugural is considered not only extremely affective but also immensely profound, because like any other great presidential inaugural is it timeless. Close textual analysis is employed to analyze his speech.
