Moving Pictures: Context Of Use And Iconography Of Chariots In The New Kingdom, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
Moving Pictures: Context Of Use And Iconography Of Chariots In The New Kingdom, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
Faculty Book Chapters
Chariots, the racing cars of the ancient world, first appeared in Egypt about 1600 BC, and quickly became not only the preferred mode of transport for royalty and the elite, but also revolutionised military tactics and warfare. Remains of chariots have been found in Egyptian tombs –Tutankhamun’s tomb contained six chariots, which tripled the number of ancient Egyptian chariots known before the discovery of his tomb. However, none of the chariots was complete, as all lacked their leather casings, which were only known from images on tomb and temple walls.
In 2008, the Ancient Egyptian Leatherwork Project (AELP) working in …

These days cyber war is considered to be one of the important issues that have become the focus of defense officials of major countries. Cyber war has the same damage effect as traditional war even more massive. A country's nuclear installations can be destroyed with the help of cyber soldiers. The energy source of a country can also be disabled with the help of cyber troops. Or creating chaos in a country's election such as US election in 2016 also involving cyber troops. The same situation also happened in Indonesia whereby official website of general election commission, public companies and …
Resilience Thinking For Peacebuilders, Patrik Johansson
Resilience Thinking For Peacebuilders, Patrik Johansson
International Journal of Peace Studies
The concept of resilience is currently making its way into the field of peace and conflict studies, but it is a concept with different meanings and implications. The argument advanced in this paper is that in order to make the most of resilience thinking, the field should not conceive of resilience merely as the ability to bounce back to an original state after a disturbance, a conceptualization usually referred to as “engineering resilience.” Instead, it should engage with “ecological resilience,” which refers to the amount of disturbance that a system can absorb before being pushed across a threshold from one …

Political activism attests to the sociopolitical development and agency of young people. Yet the literature sparingly engages the intersectional subjectivities that inform the sociopolitical development of young people, especially women of color. Important questions remain in the theorizing of sociopolitical development among youth engaged in political activism within higher education settings. Thus, we focus on the following question: What experiences informed or catalyzed the sociopolitical development of women of color student activists within a racialized neoliberal university in the United States? In addressing this question we demonstrate how student-led participatory action research (PAR) within the neoliberal university can facilitate and …

Coin Doctrine For The 21st Century Gwot: Improvements For Battling Al Qaeda In The Western Sahel, Caleb Archuleta
Honors Program Theses
This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach in examining the United States role in the conflict in Mali and Niger. As a strategic locale in a region that is plagued with conflict, the U.S. is faced with increasing involvement across Africa, specifically the Western Sahel. With an Al Qaeda that continues to shift, change, and grow, the U.S. is faced with a War on Terror that is increasingly difficult to contain or succeed in. In an effort to shift the narrative to one from counterterrorism to one of counterinsurgency, this paper takes an in depth look at the political, geographical, sociocultural, …
Terrorist Celebrity: Online Personal Branding And Jihadist Recruitment And Planning, Ari Weil
Terrorist Celebrity: Online Personal Branding And Jihadist Recruitment And Planning, Ari Weil
Pomona Senior Theses
Shifts in culture and technology have changed the manifestation of celebrity in modern society, culminating in the practice of internet microcelebrity, where one views followers as fans, produces content consistent with a personal brand, and engages in strategic interaction with devotees. This thesis examines how those effects have also changed how terrorists present themselves and operationalize celebrity status. An original typology of terrorist celebrity is presented: traditional, martyr, and internet micro-celebrity. Two in-depth case studies of terrorist micro-celebrities are analyzed: Anwar al-Awlaki of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Junaid Hussain of the Islamic State. The case studies are …

The Effect Of Unemployment On Democratic Warfare, Andres Rakower
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study was done to see the effects of a war on the economy and the internal politics of the United States. In selecting the engagement, we would study we agreed the Iraq War would be aided by a large amount of sampling of public opinion that was more nuanced than in previous wars. The Iraq War was a very complicated war, as it was controversial from the beginning and became a political issue while continuing to be a war fought by Americans abroad. Based on the literature, there were many starting effects and assumptions that were accounted for such …

When The Clocks Strike Thirteen: Political Repression In Modern America (1990-2015), Faiza Begani
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Abounding acts of repression committed in democracies have continued to be overlooked and under-analyzed by many researchers and scholars due to "democratic exceptionalism". As the United States enters yet another consecutive year of declining political satisfaction and freedom. It has become pertinent that as conflict study researchers, scholars, and readers alike that there is a basic understanding of coercion including acts that have been committed within our own countries. Countless scholars have focused conflict study research on underdeveloped or emerging democracies, yet many have overlooked the seamy side of developed ones. This article aims to explain the relationship between the …
Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez
Why Do Women And Children Join Insurgencies? A Comparative Study Of The Pkk And The Farc, Stephanie Melendez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Why do women and children join insurgency groups? The subject has been a matter of extensive debate, with experts offering theories of motivation on well-known groups such as the National Liberation Front (FLN) or the Irish Republican Army (IRA). However, there has been a small amount of work comparing two insurgency groups and their participants to one another. This paper addresses the underlying reasons for why women and children join insurgencies, explicitly focusing on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey from their origins to the present. The paper uses interviews from …
Submission Or Subversion: Women With Shaved Hair In Media, Thea Cheuk
Submission Or Subversion: Women With Shaved Hair In Media, Thea Cheuk
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
“It is quite obvious that the shaving of heads fundamentally damages the physical and moral integrity of those people for whom it was intended,” Fabrice Virgili asserts in his book Shorn Women: Gender and Punishment in Liberation France (135). For centuries, hair has been held as a standard of feminine beauty, therefore a lack of it has a long and storied history as well. Records of head shaving as a form of punishment for women can be traced back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. Shaving a woman’s head was a sign of sin and shame, and stripped them of …
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
CMC Senior Theses
Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …
Domestic Terrorism In The United States, Joe B. Williams
Domestic Terrorism In The United States, Joe B. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lone wolf terrorism has received considerable media attention, yet this phenomenon has not been sufficiently examined in an academic study. National security officials must distinguish between terrorist activities carried out by lone wolves and those carried out by terrorist networks for effective intervention and potential prevention. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the phenomenon of the leaderless lone wolf terrorist and the underlying mechanisms and processes that lead individuals to be drawn to or away from an existing radical movement. The theoretical framework for this study was leaderless resistance theory. Secondary data from interviews, field notes, and …
Government And Nongovernmental Collaboration To Build Community Resiliency Against Terrorism In Oklahoma City, Kimberly K. Heltz
Government And Nongovernmental Collaboration To Build Community Resiliency Against Terrorism In Oklahoma City, Kimberly K. Heltz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The way communities build resiliency and prepare for acts of terrorism is ambiguous in the United States; best practices remain unclear. Due to mobility and advancements in communication technologies, individuals and organizations share information, incite anger, recruit, and act on ideological grievances with ease. Such grievances are bolstered by the political and social exclusion of disparate groups through poorly designed policies and ineffective government structures. Using a combination of social constructivism and systems thinking theories, this case study explored collaboration efforts between government agencies and nongovernment experts in Oklahoma City, OK, identifying best practices as a result of lessons learned …
American National Security Strategy As It Pertains To The Afghanistan War, Robert Hayworth
American National Security Strategy As It Pertains To The Afghanistan War, Robert Hayworth
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Following 16 years of war in Afghanistan the number of U.S. military, Coalition forces and Afghan civilian fatalities has exceeded the number of Americans lost on 9/11 and has cost the United States nearly $841 billion dollars. The results are that Afghanistan remains in turmoil and that terrorist attacks, the reason for the invasion, continues. The question is should United States assess a different approach that would result in less blood and treasure being spent to address the need to mitigate terrorist threats. Guided by the analysis of conventional- centric and asymmetric-centric approaches to a counterterrorism strategy, this qualitative study …

Exploring Critical Consciousness, Facilitating Black Liberation, Della V. Mosley
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
The current study aimed to uncover processes and experiences that led individuals to critically engage in racial justice activism, specifically the Black Lives Matter movement. A constructivist grounded theory approach was utilized under critical-ideological and Black feminist paradigms in order to build a practical theory related to developing critical consciousness about oppression facing the Black community. Black activists in the movement between the ages of 23 and 60 (N=12) participated in intensive individual interviews. The result of the study is a co-constructed theory of racial justice activism development (the Critical Consciousness of Anti-Black Racism [CCABR] model) that can be used …

The Sudanese Indigenous Model For Conflict Resolution: A Case Study To Examine The Relevancy And The Applicability Of The Judiyya Model In Restoring Peace Within The Ethnic Tribal Communities Of The Sudan, Abdul S. Wahab
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research case study explored the indigenous model of conflict resolution known as the “Judiyya,” in the South Darfur State, Sudan. The purpose of the study has been to understand the principles and practices of the Judiyya in maintaining peace among Darfuri tribal communities. Judiyya is a community-based, human-centered model that employs restorative and transformative principles in conflict resolution. The literature review provided context for a research project that addressed the following questions: What is the role of the Judiyya in the current situation? How does the model work? What are its decision-making processes? How does the Judiyya model …
Cyber Security And Risk Society: Estonian Discourse On Cyber Risk And Security Strategy, Lauren Kook
Cyber Security And Risk Society: Estonian Discourse On Cyber Risk And Security Strategy, Lauren Kook
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The main aim of this thesis is to call for a new analysis of cyber security which departs from the traditional security theory. I argue that the cyber domain is inherently different in nature, in that it is lacking in traditional boundaries and is reflexive in nature. Policy-makers are aware of these characteristics, and in turn this awareness changes the way that national cyber security strategy is handled and understood. These changes cannot be adequately understood through traditional understanding of security, as they often are, without missing significant details. Rather, examining these changes through the lens of Ulrich Beck’s risk …
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Research, Historical Research, And Patient Narratives Of The Diagnostic Experience, Megan Halstead
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
While Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a disorder that has been studied since the mid-1800s, it is still considered to be one of the most common chronic illnesses that no one has ever heard of. The etiology of POTS is well described in modem medical literature, but the disorder continues to be misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in patients. By reviewing historical literature, patient narratives, and cross-cultural medical literature on POTS through the context of the disease vs illness model developed by medical anthropologists, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of POTS to facilitate more positive outcomes in …

Ancient China And Its Eurasian Neighbors: Artifacts, Identity, And Death In The Frontier, 3000-700 Bce, Katheryn M. Linduff, Yan Sun, Wei Cao, Yuanqing Liu
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
This volume examines the role of objects in the region north of early dynastic state centers, at the intersection of Ancient China and Eurasia, a large area that stretches from Xinjiang to the China Sea, from c.3000 BCE to the mid-eighth century BCE. This area was a frontier, an ambiguous space that lay at the margins of direct political control by the metropolitan states, where local and colonial ideas and practices were reconstructed transculturally. These identities were often merged and displayed in material culture. Types of objects, styles, and iconography were often hybrids or new to the region, as were …

Economics-Based Risk Management Of Distributed Denial Of Service Attacks: A Distance Learning Case Study, Omer Keskin, Unal Tatar, Omer Poyraz, Ariel Pinto, Adrian Gheorghe
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Managing risk of cyber systems is still on the top of the agendas of Chief Information Security Officers (CISO). Investment in cybersecurity is continuously rising. Efficiency and effectiveness of cybersecurity investments are under scrutiny by boards of the companies. The primary method of decision making on cybersecurity adopts a risk-informed approach. Qualitative methods bring a notion of risk. However, particularly for strategic level decisions, more quantitative methods that can calculate the risk and impact in monetary values are required. In this study, a model is built to calculate the economic value of business interruption during a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack …
The Effectiveness Of U.S. Development Assistance In Fostering Sustainable Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Deborah Munganga
The Effectiveness Of U.S. Development Assistance In Fostering Sustainable Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Deborah Munganga
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Sub-Saharan region of Africa is one of the most resource-rich continents in the world, but it lacks economic growth. One of the factors contributing to its low economic development is its historical legacy of colonization, authoritarian regimes, and interstate and intrastate conflicts (Ocheni & Nwankwo, 2012; Bayeh, 2015). As a consequence, this sub-region, along with South Asia, has one of the world's lowest levels of per-capita income. The existing research on Sub-Saharan Africa indicates that little to no development occurs, due to how donor agencies implement aid programs. This paper examines whether U.S. development assistance has fostered sustainable growth …
Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton
Towards A Rule-Based Model Of Human Choice: On The Nature Of Homo Constitutionalus, Roger Congleton
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Anglo-American jurisprudence emphasizes the rule of reason; it grossly neglects the reason of rules. We play socioeconomic-legal-political games that can be described empirically only by their rules. But most of us play without an understanding or ap-preciation of the rules, how they came into being, how they are enforced, how they can be changed, and most important, how they can be normatively evaluated. (Bren-nan and Buchanan, 1985, preface).

Saving Students: European Student Relief In The Aftermath Of World War I, Benjamin L. Hartley
Saving Students: European Student Relief In The Aftermath Of World War I, Benjamin L. Hartley
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The World’s Student Christian Federation established the European Student Relief (ESR) organization in 1920 in order to respond to the refugee and hunger crises emerging in the wake of World War I in Europe. Although nearly forgotten today, it was the first truly international ecumenical relief agency in the world. This article tells the story of ESR in reference to its efforts at building interorganizational coalitions and as a force for “internationalism.” The ESR’s story is instructive as the world marks the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I and is once again confronted with refugee crises.
How Anthropogenic Climate Change Exacerbates Vulnerability In Prison Communities; A Critical Environmental Justice Analysis, John L. Veit
How Anthropogenic Climate Change Exacerbates Vulnerability In Prison Communities; A Critical Environmental Justice Analysis, John L. Veit
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis examines the link between anthropogenic climate change and mass incarceration by examining how governments address conditions in and around prisons resulting from hurricanes and wildfires. Critical Environmental Justice, Treadmill of Production and Destruction theories are synthesized using what is debuted here as an intersectional camera based on the theory of intersectionality. It examines how Trump administration policies will greatly exacerbate dangers caused by climate change and increase risks and dangers caused by mass incarceration. In addition to being a call to action, this project is intended to serve as a resource for prisoner rights activists. Prisons have become …
