Book Review: The Dynamics Of Stylistic Change In Arikara Ceramics By James Deetz., Craig Johnson Jan 1975

Book Review: The Dynamics Of Stylistic Change In Arikara Ceramics By James Deetz., Craig Johnson

Nebraska Anthropologist

In his conclusion, Deetz attempts. to, establish a link between the changes in residence and ceramic patterning in a more systematic way. He points out that, there can be three possible relationships between the two. First, there is no relationship between changes in social organization and ceramics. This denies the relationship between social structure and ceramic design in general. If true, other examples of this articulation would not be found in archaeological contexts. But there are two cases which Deetz cites to refute this hypothesis. One is the similarity of his Lower Loup sample and component C pottery at Medicine …

The Social Psychology Of Small Groups: Relevancy Of Social Work Practice With Groups, Martha E. Gentry Dec 1974

The Social Psychology Of Small Groups: Relevancy Of Social Work Practice With Groups, Martha E. Gentry

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Inclusion from the social sciences to broaden the knowledge base of social work is an accepted fact. In the professions' experience with group practice such reliance is not new, and extends at least to the efforts of Coyle who saw the usefulness of the small group field in social psychology as early as 1930. More recently, Hartford's book provides a text which bridges small group theory and social work practice with groups. An examination of diverse conceptualizations of group practice reveals differential reliance upon small group findings.

As the small group is increasingly chosen as the context and means for …

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer Oct 1974

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer

IUSTITIA

Let us here examine the question of Communist Chinese representation in the United Nations in the context of a broader question: the attitude of Communist China toward international law. Was it only United States interference which kept Communist China out of the United Nations? What is the position of Communist China in regard to international law? Has the People's Republic been the lawless nation that it is sometimes described to be? In an attempt to provide questions, one must examine those arguments which emphasize the lawlessness of Communist China and seek to determine the attitude of the Communist Chinese toward …

Toward Partisan Politics In A Professional Association: Utility Of The Candidates Poll, L. K. Northwood, Howard Crockett Sep 1974

Toward Partisan Politics In A Professional Association: Utility Of The Candidates Poll, L. K. Northwood, Howard Crockett

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to describe the initial efforts of one local chapter, The Puget Sound Chapter; to engage in partisan politics by the conduct of a poll of candidates for election to the Washington State Legislature in 1974. Properly speaking, the Chapter endorsed no candidates, merely rated them from "weak" to "outstanding" on their agreement with NASW policies on relevant programs and their social welfare attitudes. Thus, it is a mild form of partisan politics that will be considered.

The paper will analyze the social and organizational context in which the candidates' poll occurred, and then report …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in the issue. . .

IN THIS JANUARY 1974 issue, we range uneasily from the tragedy of the Mid East to the more predictable behavior of Chief Justice Warren Burger respecting the First Amendment to a quiet but hopeful examination of the political efforts of the elderly to improve their straitened lives to informed speculation on the rate of personality cults in general and the cult of Chairman Mao in particular; and we end on the literary note with a new approach to the criticism of poetry illustrated by a comparison of three poems by William Stafford, and with a …

Hirabayashi And Korematsu: The Stone Court's Double-Edged Sword, Thomas Seilheimer

Honors Theses

Law, as a fixed or immutable device for civilized social intercourse, is a myth. All too often the law has been construed in capital letters, and little has it been realized or remembered that the law has been written by people and interpreted by people. Rather than the rigidity and permanence of steel and stone, the law expounded by the Supreme Court has been more like clay. Case upon case, decision after decision, the law of the Court has been constantly re-molded and re-defined to meet the ever-changing needs of society, and to protect the personal freedoms of American citizens.

Museum Visitor Analysis: The Kampsville Example, Kenneth L. Brott

All Master's Theses

This paper concerns a small community museum in Kampsville, Illinois. Economic interaction phenomena are examined within the immediate business community for impact derived directly from museum visitors. Increased sales potential available from museum visitor interaction was examined through field observation. Potential impact from this source signals a viable means of educational and economic development appreciated simultaneously in small communities attempting revitalization efforts.

Guidelines and recommendations are included for application in additional research studies of museum/community interaction potential.
