The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer Jan 1980

The Huff Site A Reconstruction Of Past Lifeways, Emery Ladean Mehrer

Nebraska Anthropologist

The purpose of this paper is to construct, from available literature, the possible social structure of the inhabitants of the Huff Site (32MO11). Although archeology is termed as the study of the human past, with its objectives being construction of cultural chronology, reconstruction of past lifeways, and discovery of processes that underlie and condition human behavior, I feel that many times these objectives are either overlooked or only in part covered. This paper will serve as an example of possible inferences which can be made from archeological and historical data. Some inferences or hypotheses which are made in this paper …

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte Jan 1980

Maintenance Of An Empire: Soviet Foreign Behaviour In The ’80s, Pierre Eugene Lacompte

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis undertakes an examination of certain Soviet problems which upon analysis serve to support the views of publicists such as Richard Nixon, Richard Pipes, Edward Luttwak, Paul Nitze, and Eugene Rostow. These experts argue that the Soviet Union is bent on a course of world hegemony. The objective of the thesis is to determine if the Soviet leadership is under lateral pressure to expand. Two proportions underline the broad theme of the thesis: that the Soviet Union is the de facto Russian empire, with the same concerns, i.e. stability and Russian domination; that real arms restraint on the part …

Ecological Systems Theory In Social Work, Max Siporin Jan 1980

Ecological Systems Theory In Social Work, Max Siporin

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Ecological systems theory is explicated as a current form of successive systems models used in social work. Behavior principles assumptive in this model are identified: of exchange balance, inner consistency, and dialectial change. Several misconceptions of ecological systems theory and a cultist aspect of its current popularity are addressed. Advantages, including the emergence of practice principles deriVed from this model, as well as its limitations are then discussed. The charge that systems theory helps maintain the status quo and the use of systems theory by radical proponents of system change are considered in terms of the dual function of social …

Community Development: Youth Programming In A Model Neighborhood In Peoria, Illinois, Ann Flesor Henby

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a youth program in a minority "model neighborhood" area located in a low-income tract in Peoria, Illinois. Results of the program were compared to previous research on youth programs and others' personal working experiences in a minority …

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight Jan 1980

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight

Masters Theses

The conflict in the Middle East is a turbulent situation of great significance to the entire world. This study examines the internal political scene of Israel and its affect on the overall Middle East situation. It focuses on ideology, structure, and policy within Israel as components of that scene.

The ideology of Zionism provided the justification for the creation of Israel and continues to form the basis for governmental decision making there. An analysis of the principles of Zionism and of the statements, writings, and actions of Zionist leaders showed that the ideology could reasonably be interpreted as racist and …

Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood Jan 1980

Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the nature of social policies and the public policymaking process. It is demonstrated that public social policies tend to accrue an aura or ideology of benevolence that is only partially warranted, and that may be quite misleading to policy analysts and citizenry. The major thrust of the paper is to consider the social policy process as a strategy for public decision-making. As such, properly organized, it can provide an alternative and complementary strategy to electoral politics and protest movements. To be effective as a strategy, three major barriers must be overcome: …

The Evangelical Faith: An Initial Exploration Into The Belief System In One Congregation In Iowa, Pamela Jenkins Jan 1980

The Evangelical Faith: An Initial Exploration Into The Belief System In One Congregation In Iowa, Pamela Jenkins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study is primarily concerned with the growing movement in Christianity labeled, loosely albeit, evangelical. The word evangelical has historically had different and changing definitions. Its meaning is traced from its origins in German pietism, Wesley Methodism and the Great Awakening to its present forms and diversifications. This historical grounding has its basis in the theory concerning and surrounding the nature of religion. However, the crux of this study was to answer the question: In what ways and for what motivation, will a person belonging to an evangelical faith combine their religious ideology and their political beliefs? This question, unfortunately …

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

Cultural ecology is based on the interaction of culture, man and environment. To the understanding of this relationship the present paper discusses the origin and development of cultural ecology, the various applications and techniques of cultural ecology by the anthropological discipline, and finally, criticisms and future goals of an ecological anthropology.

Ecology is not an anthropological subdiscipline, nor is it even a standardized approach in anthropology. Ecology may be defined as the science dealing with the study of entire assemblages of living organisms and their physical milieus, which together constitute integrated systems. More simply, ecology is the study of the …

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Human And Cultural Ecology: A Partial Bibliography, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

The following bibliography represents a partial listing of books and articles dealing with human and cultural ecology. Central to this bibliography are titles dealing with the conceptual and methodological aspects of human/cultural ecology as applicable to the broad field of anthropology. Also of primary importance are titles dealing with the anthropological use of population demography. Topics of related interest (general ecology, human adaption, bioenergetics, etc.) are represented by selected titles. While the bibliography falls far short of total citation of all articles dealing with the aforementioned topics, it should provide a firm base upon which the student or researcher may …

The Relationship Of Sex-Role Classifications, Measured Vocational Interests And Expressed Vocational Interests Of Selected College Women, Sallyann Mcleod Koenig Jul 1979

The Relationship Of Sex-Role Classifications, Measured Vocational Interests And Expressed Vocational Interests Of Selected College Women, Sallyann Mcleod Koenig

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Women workers in the United States do not share equally in earned income with men, and the majority of female workers are employed in traditionally female occupations where the pay is also traditionally low. A socialization pattern seems to assign women certain career roles which have been traditionally female and to influence women in their professional ambitions and in making satisfying career choices. This study represents an attempt to investigate possible variables which influence women in making satisfying congruent career choices.

The relationship of sex-role classification, as measured by the Bem Sex-role Inventory (BSRI), vocational interests, as measured by the …

The Social Policy Of Denial: Unemployment In Israel, Harris Chaiklin May 1979

The Social Policy Of Denial: Unemployment In Israel, Harris Chaiklin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

When reality does not match the dream nations tend to suffer. In Israel unemployment compromises social democratic ideals. The country oscillates between bombast and despair. Official data is not trusted. Those who leave Russia on Israeli visas and do not come are "dropouts." Those who leave Israel for other countries are "yordim." Those who go to work every day when there is nothing to do are draining the nation with "hidden unemployment." These are terms of derision. Some of the difficulty with unemployment data and understanding Israeli response to the problem may be for security reasons. Israelis have lived in …
