[Review Of] Howard L. Harrod. Renewing The World, Raymond A. Bucko Jan 1989

[Review Of] Howard L. Harrod. Renewing The World, Raymond A. Bucko

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Howard Harrod's work provides an interpretation of the religious and moral world of the Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne and Blackfeet tribes of the Northwestern Plains. Well aware that the material he is utilizing represents interpretations by early ethnographers, he transcends this hermeneutical problem to provide an idealized reconstruction of this world guided by the theories of Schutz and Geertz and the work of Joseph Brown.

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick Jan 1989

Equity And Excellence In Education--Compatible Concepts Or Hostile Abstractions?, Theresa E. Mccormick

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Since 1983, with the publication of five well-known national reports calling for reform in education,[2] the later release of other reports by prestigious groups (such as the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession and the Holmes Group), and the enactment of approximately 700 state statutes focused on school reform,[3] the push for excellence has overshadowed earlier commitments to equity in schools. As Orlich writes, "In at least one instance, implementing the proposals of these two groups [Carnegie and Holmes] would have the same undesirable effect: reducing the number of minority teachers from few to virtually none."[4] This movement …

Abstracts From The Seventeenth Annual Naes Conference

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Johnnella Butler, chair of Afro-American Studies at the University of Washington, directed the seventeenth annual Conference on Ethnic and Minority Studies in Seattle. Graduate students and staff from the Department of American Ethnic Studies provided support for the planning and several students from the University of Washington participated either as presenters or observers. Participants from throughout the United States arrived in Seattle during a rare spring snowstorm to hear papers on the conference theme, "Ethnicity in America: Interdisciplinary Approaches." Participants were welcomed by James D. Nason, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington, and the General …

Late Archaic Landscapes, Stephen Howard Savage Jan 1989

Late Archaic Landscapes, Stephen Howard Savage

Anthropological Studies

Traditional research into the Late Archaic period in the Southeastern United States has focused on matters related to subsistence and procurement, carried out under such paradigms as Cultural Ecology, Optimal Foraging Theory, and settlement/subsistence studies. The Landscape Archaeology approach is able to unify a number of these traditionally separate avenues of research into a holistic approach, while incorporating recent revisionist models such as Social Territories, Boundary/Center studies, and the dialectic between the physical/cultural landscape and individual perceptions of it. When the Landscape Archaeology approach is operationalized through Geographic Information Systems methodology, a truly powerful theory and method may be applied …

Merging Foreign And Domestic Information Policy Goals: The Us Government’S Office Of Technical Services (1946-1950), Robert K. Stewart Jan 1989

Merging Foreign And Domestic Information Policy Goals: The Us Government’S Office Of Technical Services (1946-1950), Robert K. Stewart

Electronic Reference Materials

This document describes the early history of the Federal Government technical reports distribution system. The Office of Technical Services has evolved into the National Technical Information System.

Digitized by Robert L. Bolin

US information policy during the post-World War II era reflected a duality of purpose: gain international superiority in the science and technology sectors, and promote the flow of such information to small business in America. To accomplish these dual purposes, Congress and the administration cooperated to create and fund the Office of Technical Services. OTS's job was to communicate the enormous body of scientific and technical research undertaken …

Constraining Ground Force Exercises Of Nato And The Warsaw Pact, Robert D. Blackwill, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1989

Constraining Ground Force Exercises Of Nato And The Warsaw Pact, Robert D. Blackwill, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Confidence and security building measures (CSBMs) have long been the neglected stepchild of serious arms control analysis. Some view CSBMs as "arms control junk food," frivolous, unworkable, or even detrimental. Others are so enamored of the concept that they expect proposals to be accepted as prima facie desirable. After all, the very term "confidence and security" connotes stability and peace. The problem with both positions is often the dearth of hard analysis in support of the ideas put forward and the abstract nature of the discussions of "security building." As witnessed in the contrast between the quiet success of the …

Soviet Crisis Decision‐Making And The Gorbachev Reforms, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1989

Soviet Crisis Decision‐Making And The Gorbachev Reforms, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

The Soviet Union led by President Mikhail Gorbachev has widely heralded the adoption of a new military doctrine which posits war prevention as its fundamental goal. Yet, as Akhromeyev acknowledges in the above quote, a reliable defence, or preparation for war, is also essential. What is not acknowledged, let alone resolved, is that the two desired goals - prevention and preparation - may come into sharp conflict, especially in a super-power crisis. Prevention of war may make it necessary to defer actions which ready forces for battle or reduce their vulnerability. If war appears likely, however, pressures will arise to …

Creationist Resistance To Evolution: The Patriarchal Unconscious As The Key, Ladelle Mcwhorter, Robert B. Graber Jan 1989

Creationist Resistance To Evolution: The Patriarchal Unconscious As The Key, Ladelle Mcwhorter, Robert B. Graber

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Enlightened scientists and educators everywhere lament the persistence of disbelief in the process of evolution through natural selection, but they have done little to illuminate the psychological basis of this resistance. This neglect unfortunately applies even to psychoanalytic commentators, who, while uncovering oedipal elements in evolutionism, have remained silent about creationism. We believe, however, that psychoanalysis has much to offer toward a solution of the problem of creationism's persistence. In particular, we propose that evolutionary theory stirs a profound fear, rooted in the psychosexual developmental processes characterizing human society thus far, of female power.

Regional Security Organizations And National Interests: Analyzing The Nato-Greek Relationship, Constantine P. Danopoulos Oct 1988

Regional Security Organizations And National Interests: Analyzing The Nato-Greek Relationship, Constantine P. Danopoulos

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the reasons which account for Greece's continuing membership in the Atlantic Alliance, even though NATO has not lived up to expectations and has failed to protect the nation's security against threats from Turkey. Following a brief examination of Greek attitudes toward NATO and the nature of dissatisfaction, the article argues that strategic concerns are, at best, of secondary importance. Instead, Greece's continuing membership in the Alliance is a result of the nation's economic ties to the West and the dependency of its military on NATO and Washington for advanced training, arms, war materiel, and other professional considerations. …

Dynamics Of Minority Education: An Index To The Status Of Race And Ethnic Relations In The United States, James E. Blackwell Sep 1988

Dynamics Of Minority Education: An Index To The Status Of Race And Ethnic Relations In The United States, James E. Blackwell

Trotter Review

Throughout this century scholars and legal experts have devoted special attention to the issue of race and ethnicity as a determinant of life chances in the United States. Some of the more influential treatises in the social and behavioral sciences, many of which have become classics, addressed fundamental, derivative (and often more compelling) extensions of race and ethnicity. They focused on such topics as race-based group dominance, ethnic stratification, structural inequality based upon racial or ethnic identification, beliefs in inherent racial superiority and status privilege, class exploitation, the nature of prejudice, and the maintenance of power over groups defined as …
