Death, Loss, And Grief Work, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …

Spatial Distribution Of Hispanic Households In Holland, Michigan: 1960-1990, Cynthia J. Longstreet
Spatial Distribution Of Hispanic Households In Holland, Michigan: 1960-1990, Cynthia J. Longstreet
Masters Theses
This paper examines patterns of Hispanic household concentration and segregation from non-Hispanic households in Holland, Michigan for the decades from 1960 to 1990 with some analysis of 1950 patterns. Household data were obtained from United States census reports and Polk directories, from which location quotients and indices of dissimilarity were calculated for census tracts and census blocks within the study area.
Data showed that most of Holland’s Hispanic households have been found in the three census tracts closest to the central city, but that deconcentration is occurring as more Hispanic families setde in peripheral areas of Holland. Data also indicated …
Technological Fix: Altering The Consciousness Of The Social Work Profession, Dennis Saleebey
Technological Fix: Altering The Consciousness Of The Social Work Profession, Dennis Saleebey
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social work, like other professions, seeks a jolt of technology and technical sophistication into its theoretical and practical repertories. Such efforts have, thus far, ignored the considerable ethical and axiological freight that "Techne" brings with it. Ironically, many of the implicit values of techniques subvert the unique and defining values of the social work profession. This paper offers a cautionary note and a prescription for avoiding the "technological fix."
“The Mirror Crack'd": Women As Mothers And Wives In Paternally Incestuous Families, Mary Deyoung
“The Mirror Crack'd": Women As Mothers And Wives In Paternally Incestuous Families, Mary Deyoung
Dissertations
Women often are blamed for paternal incest. Although the notion of women's culpability is repeated so often in the literature that it has all the tranquility of an axiom, few studies have even used these women as subjects. This study sought to remedy that flaw by using as its subjects 20 women from paternally incestuous families. Each participated in an in-depth interview comprised of life history questions, and in a shorter follow-up interview.
The women reported a moderate degree of conflict between their roles as mother and wife. Their strategies for coping with that conflict were categorized according to the …

Representative Men, Shaun O'Connell
Representative Men, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
"Representativeness" is the theme of Shaun O'Connell's essay, "Representative Men." Reviewing six books, one about an actual man and five about fictional men, O'Connell sees them as attempts to define "representative men" of the 1980s, "an era," he observes, "when the worst were full of passionate intensities, particularly among men." Each antiheroic man in these books, he concludes, was "selfish, domineering, dangerous to women, and deceitful, yet each man was also committed to a system of values and ideas that made him an interesting case history — values which, in some instances, redeemed his failings."
As usual, O'Connell, in his …

The Anchor, Volume 104.02: September 4, 1991, Hope College
The Anchor: 1991
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
West African Archaeology And The Atlantic Slave Trade, Christopher R. Decorse
West African Archaeology And The Atlantic Slave Trade, Christopher R. Decorse
Anthropology - All Scholarship
Recent archaeological research in the New World has focused on slave dwellings and post-emacipation communities, providing a great deal of insight into slave life and the emergence of African-American culture. In contrast, the material record in West Africa has supplied little new information on the slave trade. Numerous European forts and barracoons serve as pervasive reminders of its existence. However, excavation of these sites is only likely to attest to the meagre possessions of the slaves and their treatment prior to the middle passage, offering little insight into their cultural and ethnic origins. European forts were collection points; the slaves …
Strategic Defense: Should The Air Force Change Its Doctrine, Lois J. Schloz
Strategic Defense: Should The Air Force Change Its Doctrine, Lois J. Schloz
Theses and Dissertations
This study set out to determine if the United States Air Force strategic defense doctrine requires changing. The researcher applied contextual content analysis to selected foreign policy statements taken from Presidential State of the Union addresses to determine if past doctrine and strategy changes were evidenced by the context and emphasis scores generated by the Minnesota Contextual Content Analysis (MCCA) software package used for this study. Use of the student's t-test showed differences in mean scores between years with no strategy or doctrinal changes and those in which such changes are documented. These differences in means indicate changes in attitude, …

Changes In U.S.-International Arms Trade Practices, Rustam S. Karmali
Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to highlight the evolution of certain trade practices in U.S.-international arms trade. Limited to the eighties, the study divided the decade into two halves: 1980-84 and 1985-89. For each of the nine trade practices considered, period profiles for the two halves were developed and subsequently compared. The population consisted of the eighteen largest (by dollar value) sales of the decade. They included Air Force, Navy and Army systems. Some programs were FMS programs while others were cooperative or direct commercial sales. The following results were noted: The second half of the decade witnessed some diversification in the …

The Effects Of Social Support On The Psychological Adjustment Of Navy Wives Experiencing Deployment, Marci A. Harris
The Effects Of Social Support On The Psychological Adjustment Of Navy Wives Experiencing Deployment, Marci A. Harris
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The military, particularly a Navy deployment, provides unique challenges and stresses to the military family. The present study investigated the effects of social support on the psychological well-being of Navy wives experiencing spousal deployment. Sixty-three Navy wives in the Tidewater, Virginia area completed questionnaires on depression, self-esteem, and daily stress, as well as on the size of and satisfaction with affective and instrumental support. Assessments were made before, during, and after the deployment. Results of stepwise regressions showed that satisfaction with various aspects of social support significantly (p < .05) predicted levels of depression, self-esteem, and daily stress at all three phases of deployment. Results also showed that psychological wellbeing was lowest at middeployment. Findings demonstrate the importance of developing satisfactory social support systems prior to, during, and after deployment.
War, Peace, And "The System": Three Perspectives, Paul Adams
War, Peace, And "The System": Three Perspectives, Paul Adams
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social workers have sometimes seen war as part of a larger system and as linked to other forms of violence or social evil. This article considers three kinds of analysis which identify different systems (capitalism, patriarchy, and exterminism), see the links in different ways, and lead to different practical conclusions. Each perspective is examined in terms of its capacity to explain the phenomena it describes and to identify a social change strategy that can eliminate them. It is suggested that social workers may be professionally predisposed to select among these perspectives for reasons other than their explanatory power or strategic …
Inter-American Indemnity: Internal Security And The Mutual Security Program For Latin America (1951-1961), Robert George Baker
Inter-American Indemnity: Internal Security And The Mutual Security Program For Latin America (1951-1961), Robert George Baker
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the purpose of U.S. military aid in the American Republics from 1951 through 1961 and proves that concern for internal security became dominant during that period. At first military aid supported hemispheric defense against communist aggression, which Washington orchestrated through mutual defense agreements, but by 1953 maintenance of internal security emerged as the major aim of aid to several Central American nations. In 1956 the National Security Council determined that internal security was a vital goal of the military aid program for Latin America. The ascendance of internal security concerns is described and analyzed in three parts: …

Reverse Peace Corps: A Proposal On The Recruitment Of Third World Nationals As Peace Corps Volunteers Assigned To The United States, Payam Foroughi
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
"War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." (Orwell 1949, p. 5). Indeed, in 1960, when President Kennedy announced his future plans for a Peace Corps of young Americans, there were already an estimated 10,000 Americans working in the Third World country of Vietnam in the capacity of "military advisors". By 1963 there were 17,000 such Americans in Vietnam and another 7,000 Americans in 44 other Third World countries working as Peace Corps Volunteers (Rice 1985).
In 1835, reflecting on the then young America, Tocqueville stated that "of all nations, those most fond of peace are democratic nations" and …

Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) An Attempt To Explore The Role Of Khomeiniism In The War, Masoud Bonyanian
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of Khomeiniism on the Shi'ites of Iraq. Specifically it seeks to determine whether the rise of Khomeiniism in Iran inspired Iraq's Shi'ite majority to rise against the Ba'athist leaders of Iraq with the object of establishing an Islamic Republic. The paper focuses on the political activities of the Iraqi Shi'ites from Ayatollah Khomeini's rise to power in Iran in February 1979 to the beginning of hostilities between Iraq and Iran in September 1980. The evidence indicates mounting anti-Ba'athist political activity by the Shi'ites which included daily rioting, attempted assassinations, and a rise in the number …
