International Human Rights, Morality In War, And The Structure Of Rights, Edward C. O'Dowd, Robert F. Schopp
International Human Rights, Morality In War, And The Structure Of Rights, Edward C. O'Dowd, Robert F. Schopp
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
A careful analysis of certain issues of morality in war demonstrates important differences in the duties recognized by Western and Chinese military) officers toward their soldiers. These differences reflect fundamentally different theories of social morality in the societies these officers represent. Although Western countries and China have endorsed a common set of internationally recognized human rights, a meaningful consensus regarding human rights must remain consistent across three levels of analysis. The putative contemporary) consensus among Chinese and liberal societies fails because the fundamental differences in underlying principles of social morality that give rise to divergent principles of morality in war …
A Summary Of The History Of The Caddo People, Frank F. Schambach
A Summary Of The History Of The Caddo People, Frank F. Schambach
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
I am pleased and very honored that you have invited me here today to tell you something about the past of the Caddo people as it is known to archaeologists. This is a subject that has been both my occupation and my major preoccupation for more than 25 years. The story that I and other archaeologists have been piecing together over many years is long, complex, and endlessly fascinating. It is a heritage that anyone could be proud of. Let me give you some of the highlights.
The story began over 11,500 years ago--or about 9,500 B.C.--when the first people …

Afghanistan's Economic Prospects After Soviet Occupation And Jihad (Islamic Armed Struggle), 1979-1993, Abdul Haq Amiri
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Afghanistan's future economic prospects especially in the aftermath of Russian occupation and the prolonged Islamist armed resistance by the peoples of Afghanistan. To achieve this goal, it is, however, necessary to provide some historical background about the country and to review the nation's economic progress before the onset of the Russian war (1979-1989) . While the presentation of this thesis has a historical dimension, it investigates and evaluates the consequences of communist rule and Soviet occupation. The thesis contains several parts including a conclusion and a policy recommendation. However, the problems …

Susan Laflesche Picotte.Md.: Nineteenth-Century Physician And Reformer, Valerie Sherer Mathes
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
She was laid to rest beside her husband on a fall Sunday in a small Nebraska town. Three clergymen performed the simple service, the pastor of the Walthill Presbyterian Church, the pastor of the Blackbird Hills Mission, and a member of the Presbyterian Home Missions Board. The closing prayer was given by an Omaha tribal elder. That afternoon a moving graveside service was performed by members of the Amethyst Chapter of the Eastern Star. This diverse assemblage, paying their last respects on 19 September 1915 at the family home and at the Bancroft Cemetery, represented only one facet of the …
An American Heart Of Darkness: The 1913 Expedition For American Indian Citizenship, Russel Lawrence Barsh
An American Heart Of Darkness: The 1913 Expedition For American Indian Citizenship, Russel Lawrence Barsh
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In his pungent essay on Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Chinua Achebe explores Europeans' literary use of African stereotypes to work out their own psycho-social dilemmas.1 The journey into Africa was in reality a journey inside the confused souls of explorers and missionaries who sometimes found salvation there but never saw, heard, or found the Africans. The Africans they imagined were only a dark reflection of themselves.

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Achievement In An Rotc Leadership Development And Assessment Setting, Robert W. Dinnen
The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Achievement In An Rotc Leadership Development And Assessment Setting, Robert W. Dinnen
Masters Theses
This study was designed to determine whether there was a positive relationship between an individual's self-esteem and their achievement in a leadership development and assessment setting. While correlational studies have been conducted utilizing self-esteem and achievement as variables, no known study has been conducted with achievement at ROTC Advance Camp as a dependent variable. The hypothesis tested focused on determining if there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and achievement at ROTC Advance Camp. Sixty-six ROTC cadets from five select universities in the state of Illinois were administered the Barksdale Self-Esteem Evaluation Number 35. The results of their evaluation was …
"Easy Or Hard" The Mentality Of Survival: The Gi In Europe In World War Two, Brian R. Bowen
"Easy Or Hard" The Mentality Of Survival: The Gi In Europe In World War Two, Brian R. Bowen
Masters Theses
An oral history compiled from recollections of fourteen combat veterans, documented by over forty hours of tape-recorded interviews, the paper recreates GIs' mentality upon entering combat. The formation of the collective mentality is examined by exploring the attitudes, motivations, and historical circumstances determining thought and actions of these reluctant, yet dedicated soldiers. The collective mentality, defined as the way of thinking allowing the majority to best cope with their predicament, answers why men fought and how they persevered once in combat. Explaining sustained combat performance the paper proves how the collective mentality gave Gls the will and ability to withstand …
Setting Sun: Popular Culture Images Of The Japanese And Japanese Americans And Public Policy, Mary Young
Setting Sun: Popular Culture Images Of The Japanese And Japanese Americans And Public Policy, Mary Young
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The negative, stereotypical depictions of the Japanese and Japanese Americans in American popular culture in the first half of the twentieth century were of great importance in the promulgation of the Asian Exclusion Act of 1924, the internment of Japanese Americans following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the subsequent dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The American public had been adequately prepared to accept inaccurate representations of Japanese and Japanese Americans; therefore, there was little public outcry against these actions.

Improving Team Performance By Identifying And Targeting Back-Up Behaviors: A Training Strategy, Rosalynn M. Peron
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to determine if training workshops of short duration (one-to-three hours) could contribute to enhanced teamwork and hence improved team performance for teams at the primary level (first production level) of a natural gas service and installation organization.
The teamwork characteristic of back-up behaviors (i.e., actions to help other team members that require adaption or anticipation and improve team performance by contributing to successful task completion) was the focus of workshop activities. Other strategies were employed to enhance the process such as team-building, goal setting and feedback. Feedback consisted of posting back-up behavior scores (i.e., …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
A systems engineering approach to the development of a radically different kind of surface combatant ship is presented, followed by a preliminary design of the ship shown by the analysis to be most effective. The requirement for the project was the development of a ship which would provide a major increase in the missile firepower of a battlegroup. The study conducts an analysis of four warfare scenarios and evaluates the effectiveness of replacing some Aegis ships with the missile carrier (CMX) and examines the relative utility of varying missile loads for the CMX. An alternative is chosen for further development …

Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Spending a night at a typical big city shelter for the homeless has reminded the author of the massive and regimented environment in institutions that she had mistakenly believed no longer existed after the much acclaimed "deinstitutionalization" of America. St. Mary's is run by a religious order attempting to provide charitable care in a nondemanding environment. Many demands are made, however. The lack of privacy and respect for individuality inherent in institutional life tends to erode the "inmate's" very conception of self. It controls their activities, time, and choices, and thus creates barriers to exit. Providing "shelter" for the homeless …

Congress And Early Federalist Military Policy: An Examination Of Defense Related Roll Calls In The Second United States Congress, 1792-1793, Elbert S. Barker Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The legislators of the Second United States House of Representatives faced a set of challenging military and political problems when they met in November 1791. The issue of what would be the primary means of the young nation's defense had not yet been determined. The old British and colonial precedents of a militia as the first line of defense were firmly rooted in the minds of most congressmen meeting in Philadelphia. Many of the legislators had been indelibly imprinted with a fear of a large standing army in peacetime from their own personal experiences in the pre-Revolutionary days. Many of …
