The Geographical Bulletin
The Alpha Chapter is surprising itself every year with more initiates (21 this year) and more active members (35 very active individuals)! We were a busy bunch this year starting with our Homecoming float and kiddy kazoo band, in conjunction with the Political Science Club, with 60 parents and children participating, and even receiving third place award of $150. National Geography Awareness week included geography quizzes across campus, selling geography T-shirts, and visits to the local Junior High schools to make kids more aware of geography. We even had a 6th grade geography poster contest with local stores donating prizes.
Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model In Counselor Preparation, Everette Coffman, Jacqueline Swank, Sondra Smith
Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model In Counselor Preparation, Everette Coffman, Jacqueline Swank, Sondra Smith
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
As rates of substance abuse rise in the U.S., a treatment gap persists in the provision of prevention and intervention counseling services. Improving training in substance use treatment for counselors-in-preparation who provide early prevention and intervention across school and clinical settings may help fill the void in access to services. To meet this need, we developed an online multidisciplinary SBIRT curriculum for our university’s counselor education program, including mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and school counselors. The five-module training prepares graduate students at a basic competency level through an integrative approach involving online instructional pedagogy. This manuscript outlines …
Relationship Between Self-Silencing And Self-Neglect Behaviors And Disordered Eating And Stigma Toward Seeking Behavioral Health Support Among Black Women Who Adopt The Superwoman Schema, Veanda Hemphill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors, key dimensions of the superwoman schema (SWS), function as protective coping mechanisms in response to psychosocial stressors. However, these behaviors often perpetuate self-sacrifice, leading to an increased risk of physical and mental health decline. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between self-silencing and self-neglect behaviors (independent variables) and disordered eating and stigma toward seeking support from behavioral health services (dependent variables) among Black women who adopt the SWS. The theoretical and conceptual frameworks of silencing the self and intersectionality guided this study. The 78 participants who self-identified as Black and …

Parental Strategies For Modifying Behavior: The Positives Of Positive Reinforcement, Benjamin D. Rasmussen
Parental Strategies For Modifying Behavior: The Positives Of Positive Reinforcement, Benjamin D. Rasmussen
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This research investigates the effectiveness of positive reinforcement as a central parenting strategy for modifying children’s behavior, grounded in B.F. Skinner’s operant conditioning theory. Using factor analysis, two key factors emerged: the impact of positive reinforcement on behavior change and its influence on parent-child dynamics. Positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desirable behaviors with positive stimuli, has been found to promote the repetition of those behaviors and yield beneficial long-term outcomes. The evidence indicates that this approach not only strengthens desirable behaviors but also enhances the quality of relationships between parents and children, and teachers and students. Although some argue that …
A Literary Review On The Effects Of Music Therapy On Depressed Adolescents: Brain Function, Individual Therapy, And Group Psychotherapy, Bella Mccain
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
This paper presents a literature review examining the impact of music therapy on adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). Music therapy, officially recognized in 1950, is a clinical intervention that addresses various psychological and cognitive deficiencies. Adolescents show a strong affinity for music, making it a potential treatment for depression, which is prevalent among this age group. This review explores studies focused on music therapy’s effects on brain function, individual psychotherapy, and group therapy for adolescents. Research suggests that music therapy positively influences brain activity by reducing cortisol levels and shifting brainwave patterns towards healthier states. In individual therapy, music …

Finding Meaning In Psychotherapy: A Literature Review Of Logotherapeutic Methodology In Psychotherapeutic Treatment, Jason M. Hoskin
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Frankl’s logotherapy is a meaning-centered therapy, focusing on finding personal life purpose to improve one’s psychological well-being, particularly during personal struggle and suffering (Frankl, 1992). This literature review analyzes the empirical research measuring the efficacy of logotherapy in psychotherapy with a total of 27 articles from 2012–2022 reviewed and analyzed. Results illustrates that published contemporary empirical research on this topic focuses mainly on studying (1) theoretical principles of logotherapy through survey data, (2) the efficacy of logotherapy-based groups psychotherapy for individuals, or (3) psychometrics of frequently used instruments for measuring meaning in life. Overall, these categories corroborate the finding that …
Overcoming Social, Cultural, Physical And Covid-19 Barriers To Treatment For Eating Disorders Through Teletherapy, Wyatt W. Capener
Overcoming Social, Cultural, Physical And Covid-19 Barriers To Treatment For Eating Disorders Through Teletherapy, Wyatt W. Capener
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Eating disorders (EDs) are among the deadliest of mental illnesses and may affect female, male, sexual and gender minorities, young, and old populations. The effects of EDs burden individuals with cultural, social, and physical inhibitors to seeking treatment and therefore may go untreated. Additionally, there is a nationwide lack of access to mental health professionals. EDs may link to a decrease in the quality of life and an increased mortality rate; therefore, it is imperative that individuals afflicted with EDs have access to treatment. The variety of symptoms associated with EDs calls for flexible solutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected …

Perceptions And Role Of Cultural Competency In Clinical Social Work Practice, Vivian Adelaide Aba Dadzie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In practice, social workers are expected to translate cultural competency skills and knowledge they have acquired to handle diverse clients whose gender, racial, ethnic, religious, and personal beliefs and orientations can conflict. Using a qualitative research approach, the study addressed perceptions and roles of cultural competence in social work practice. Three research questions guided the study. The Campinha-Bacote framework of culturally competent healthcare was used for this study. The study involved employing thematic analysis to analyze research questions. It was determined that social workers must meet clients where they are culturally, respecting and learning from them to adapt interventions accordingly. …

Exploring The Validity Of Adolescent Responses To A Measure Of Psychological Flexibility And Inflexibility, Caleb D. Farley, Tyler L. Renshaw
Psychology Student Research
Validating measures of psychological flexibility (PF) and psychological inflexibility (PI) has occurred in multiple adult samples, but little research has validated PF and PI measures with adolescents. This manuscript describes two studies exploring the validity of responses to the Multidimensional Psychological Flexibility Inventory (MPFI) with two samples of adolescents. The first study used exploratory factor analyses on responses to the MPFI with a sample of 16–17-year-olds (N = 249). The results yielded a reduced and simplified measurement model that consisted of two general factors: one for PF and the other for PI. These exploratory findings were further investigated with …

Lived Experiences Of Geriatric African American Males In Recovery And Participation In Spiritual Social-Oriented Communities, Gail Venerable
Lived Experiences Of Geriatric African American Males In Recovery And Participation In Spiritual Social-Oriented Communities, Gail Venerable
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Substance use among older persons has increased among the aging baby boomer generation. At the same time, individuals aged 65 and beyond see increased longevity. The utilization of alcohol and drugs as a means of managing associated challenges has been shown to contribute to health problems that lead to a diminished quality of life and early death rates. Empirical investigations have demonstrated that social-oriented interventions such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have a beneficial role in sustaining an individual’s recovery process. However, joining such programs may pose challenges for African American males 65 and older due to African Americans’ distrust of …

This article presents a paper developed by the AAG Organizing Committee on Locational Information and the Public Interest through a summit held in Santa Barbara, California in June 2022. The summit resulted in goals and ideas for addressing the issues that arise from the present environment for geodata, whereby public, private, and third-sector entities can tap into publicly available locational information with relatively little regulation on its access or use. The Committee articulates four goals: (1) develop a research agenda extending across disciplines, (2) outline educational resources and strategies to guide ethical practice, (3) devise a pathway to increase public …

African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
There is a shortage of teachers among rapidly expanding populations of culturally diverse students in K-12 education. Minority students enrolled in public schools have been rising while the number of minority teachers has been falling. Twenty percent of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, however, schools educate majority-minority populations. What is most troubling, is that the most negatively impacted student of K-12 diverse populations is African-American males. This commentary focuses on the fact that there are initiatives and ideas to close the teacher diversity gap by creating pipelines of African American male teachers. However, the effort it takes to …

The Catch Effort Of Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus) On South Caicos, British West Indies, Edward J. Burge Jr
The Geographical Bulletin
The spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, which inhabits bank around South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands, is the most economically important crustacean in the Caribbean region. In recent years concern regarding overfishing has become prominent. In this study 46 boat loads of specimens, with catches derived from 11 fishing sites were surveyed for data sets including size, sex, and amount from each site. The catch-per-unit effort calculated for each site revealed that individual diving ability and ease of harvest were the greatest determinants for choice of fishing site. Environmental conditions of spiny lobster habitats; such as, water depth and direction of …

Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler
The Geographical Bulletin
Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.
Ecological Influences On Informal Property Rights: Experimental Evidence, Erik O. Kimbrough
Ecological Influences On Informal Property Rights: Experimental Evidence, Erik O. Kimbrough
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
This paper explores the possibility that informal property right systems evolve unique features as a function of the characteristics of the resources over which they are established. We develop an experimental environment that allows us to test this hypothesis by comparing the emergence of property in (virtual) land when resource yields are either high- or low-variance and renewable or non-renewable. Previous research suggests that high-variance resources may lead to relatively insecure claims to property. Intuition suggests that this may be amplified when those resources are renewable. The experiments confirm that informal property rights adapt to resource characteristics in a manner …
Predictors Of Treatment Adherence Among Individuals With Bipolar Disorder And Comorbid Substance Use Disorders, Monique Dawn Romeo
Predictors Of Treatment Adherence Among Individuals With Bipolar Disorder And Comorbid Substance Use Disorders, Monique Dawn Romeo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) require lifelong treatment to manage their symptoms, and many also struggle with comorbid substance use disorders (BD-SUD) that complicate treatment adherence. Despite these challenges, there has been limited research on what factors predict successful treatment adherence in this population. This study was thus conducted to identify key predictors of adherence among individuals with BD-SUD. Several factors were examined, including age, gender, type of substance used at admission, opioid medication-assisted therapy, length of stay in inpatient psychiatric care, type of discharge service, and participation in self-help groups before discharge. The study applied a donut model framework …

A person’s relationship with God is a personal one, as is the choice of the food we eat. Today we see more and more people struggle with unhealthy relationships with food. And our relationship with food affects more than just our physical health. Food and diet can play a role in how we hear from God. The present qualitative study aimed to understand the relationship between food and connection to God. Specifically, this study aimed to explain lived experiences with food and if diet affected connection to God. A total of twelve Christian, adult men and women participated in 1:1 …
Child Sexual Abuse And Mental Health: The Role Of Intrusive Thoughts And Spiritual Warfare, Sheriese S. Sanchez
Child Sexual Abuse And Mental Health: The Role Of Intrusive Thoughts And Spiritual Warfare, Sheriese S. Sanchez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A number of psychological issues are experienced by individuals who have experienced CSA, including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, as well as intrusive thoughts contribute to the perpetuation of the mental health problem. Studies have shown that spiritual practices, such as prayer, meditation, reading the Bible, and reciting scripture affirmations, can improve mental health, improving one’s psychological well-being. Further, intrusive thoughts may be initiated by dark spiritual influences. Despite ongoing research, there is a lack of integration between disciplines of science and biblical truth concerning the impact of immaterial spiritual dimensions on psychological states. To understand intrusive thoughts, one must …

The Communication Theory Of Argumentativeness: A Study Analyzing Argumentativeness And Demographics, Monika Joanna Yates
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Quantitative research regarding the communication theory of argumentativeness is presented. The communication theory of argumentativeness, with its established argumentativeness conceptualization, scale, and measure, is central. The argumentativeness conceptualization, scale, and measure are used to posit argumentativeness groupings, which are then analyzed along with demographics within argumentativeness groupings. The following research questions are posed and answered: What is the distribution of argumentativeness within the general population? Are there identifiable segments/groupings of argumentativeness within the general population? Are there certain demographic characteristics that accompany the argumentativeness groupings of low, middle, and high argumentativeness measures? The conclusion finds: there are identifiable argumentativeness groupings; …
