Toward Integral Security: How Environmental Protection Was Incorporated Into The United Nations System And Why It Matters Today And Tomorrow, Patricia M. Mische
Toward Integral Security: How Environmental Protection Was Incorporated Into The United Nations System And Why It Matters Today And Tomorrow, Patricia M. Mische
The Journal of Social Encounters
How did the United Nations - an international organization built on 19th century worldviews and state-centric structures, integrate 21st century challenges of environmental protection into its mission and programs? The UN Charter includes no mandate for environmental protection. Ecological integrity was not included in the scope of peace and security held by member states when they ratified the UN Charter. Yet, despite this and other historical, philosophical and structural limitations, the UN became the leading body for the development of global environmental policy.

Understanding The Interplay Between Nutritional Status And Depression Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Mary R. Goldsworthy
Understanding The Interplay Between Nutritional Status And Depression Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Mary R. Goldsworthy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
By the year 2050, it is projected that the population of individuals aged 60 years and older will increase by 47 percent, reaching a total of 82 million in the United States. Many older adults experience depressive symptoms, and some never recover from it. Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders among older adults. Approximately 3.2% of community-dwelling older adults experience major depressive disorder in a 12-month period, although many more experience clinically significant depressive symptoms, with a recent estimate of 35% based on a global meta-analysis. In addition to physical functioning and depressive symptoms, another domain in …
Adverse Childhood Experiences And High School Dropout: The Roles Of Student Disengagement And Social Support, Rachel D. Pounders
Adverse Childhood Experiences And High School Dropout: The Roles Of Student Disengagement And Social Support, Rachel D. Pounders
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
More than two million students a year leave high school without a completion credential (NCES, 2024). Students who drop out are at-risk for detrimental long-term outcomes physically, mentally and economically (Rumberger, 2020). Students with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are significantly more likely to have poor educational outcomes, including school dropout (Metzler et al., 2017; Pan et al., 2019). However, there is limited insight into what affects the pathway between ACEs and poor educational outcomes for students (Dupéré et al., 2019; Morrow & Villodas, 2018). Informed by prominent dropout theories with ecological foundations and the theory of stress and coping, this …

Examining Motivations And Risk Factors Associated With Revenge Filicide, Alicia Darneice Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the motivations and risk factors of revenge filicide. Revenge filicide is when a parent murders their child or children out of retaliation to inflict emotional pain on the other parent. This descriptive study used 12 revenge filicide cases consisting of five female and seven male offenders to determine the motivation and risk factors for revenge filicide, and attachment theory was used as the theoretical foundation. The whole sample reported having strained or failed relationships with their current or former partner and were amid a bitter custody battle at the time of …

Benefits Of Psychobiography Training To The Professional And Personal Development Of Psychology Graduate Students, Joseph G. Ponterotto, Dinesh Sharma, Yuki Yamazaki
The Qualitative Report
In recent decades, psychobiography has witnessed a resurgence of activity and publication across many subdisciplines in psychology internationally. One area of recent research has been to evaluate the benefits of training in psychobiography to students’ professional development as perceived by professors and mentors in psychobiography. The present study extends this recent line of research by surveying the perceived impacts of psychobiography training among doctoral students in applied psychology. Twenty-five doctoral students who completed training and research in psychobiography in a summer course over three consecutive years, responded to an open-ended (free response) survey on the impact of conducting psychobiographies on …
Monitoring Population Pressure In The Semiarid Zone Of Kenya, Isaac Sindiga
Monitoring Population Pressure In The Semiarid Zone Of Kenya, Isaac Sindiga
The Geographical Bulletin
Population pressure is a maladjustment between resources of a community and its population. This maladjustment worsens when the population increases at a faster rate than the development of the economy. The pressure leads to the deterioration of land resources and low, risky income opportunities and widespread poverty. Kenya's population growth rate of 4 percent per year is one of the highest in the world. Its populationresource relations are deteriorating and foreshadow the country's future. In the semi-arid and arid parts of the country, especially those occupied by traditional pastoral people, population pressures are particularly serious. Here, the pressures of people …

The Syrian Tabqa Dam: Its Development And Impact, Monib Ei-Khatib
The Syrian Tabqa Dam: Its Development And Impact, Monib Ei-Khatib
The Geographical Bulletin
The Euphrates River has its sources in eastern Turkey's Anatolian Plateau and extends 3,000 kilometers through Syria and Iraq before it discharges into the river's delta at Shat AI-Arab in the Arabian Gulf. It is an exotic river, a center of past civilization and population, and a managed river with an extensive delta. It floods in early summer but its flooded area dries-out very quickly in the semiarid climate. The Euphrates River can maintain an annual flow throughout its course because of relatively high rainfall and snow-melt at higher elevations. Utilization of its drainage basin has been intensified from its …

The Nowruz Oil Spill In The Arabian Gulf: Case Study Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah S. Ai-Amirah
The Nowruz Oil Spill In The Arabian Gulf: Case Study Of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah S. Ai-Amirah
The Geographical Bulletin
The Arabian Gulf has suffered from hundreds of oil spills, some of them reported but most unreported. In many cases the amounts of the spills and their causes are usually undetermined. During 1978-1979, tanker captains reported to the Japan Oceanographic Data Center about 412 oil slicks in the Gulf and its approaches.' Table 1 shows major oil spills exceeding 3,000 barrels which occurred between August, 1980, and August, 1982. Although these are relatively current, it should be noted that other significant oil spills have occurred since oil was discovered in the region by Iran in 1908.

Murine Studies On Ketogenic Modulation Of Metabolism And Epigenetics In Olfaction- Based Learning, Lps Inflammatory Response, And Sex Dimorphisms In Dietary Response, Sara E. H. Moss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ketogenic diets are well-established therapeutic interventions for epilepsy, with documented neuroprotective effects arising from their metabolic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Beyond epilepsy, ketogenic therapies are under investigation for various conditions including Alzheimer disease, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. These diets suppress insulin levels and shift metabolic physiology toward fat and ketone body metabolism. This elevates circulating levels of ketone bodies, namely beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone, which serve as both energy substrates and signaling molecules. The state of elevated ketone bodies (ketosis) can be achieved with various formulations of a ketogenic diet as well as exogenous ketone supplementation, though the signaling …

Exploring Housing Instability Faced By Youth Aging Out Of Foster Care, Jerri Linda Malone
Exploring Housing Instability Faced By Youth Aging Out Of Foster Care, Jerri Linda Malone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the well-documented prevalence of homelessness, past research primarily focused on post-emancipation housing experiences, often overlooking housing instability, including affordability, availability, and quality. The purpose of the study was to understand youth transitioning from foster care, focusing on housing instability while transitioning to independent living. This qualitative study used generic qualitative inquiry grounded in cumulative disadvantage theory. The study explored how early adversities in foster care led to compounded challenges, particularly during the transition to adulthood. The key research question that guided the study asked what are the lived experiences of youth who have aged out of foster care and …

"Very Important Stuff For The Ladies": Examining Gender Differences In Celebrity Journalism, Payton E. Pingree
"Very Important Stuff For The Ladies": Examining Gender Differences In Celebrity Journalism, Payton E. Pingree
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores gender differences in celebrity journalism by analyzing 44 YouTube video interviews from the Oscars red carpet between 2014 and 2024. Using framing theory and feminist theory, the study examines how interviewers interact with male and female celebrities, focusing on four key behaviors: infantilizing, ambivalence, sexualization, and heteronormativity. Through qualitative thematic analysis of interview transcripts, the research reveals that female celebrities are often sexualized through questions about their appearance and subjected to heteronormative expectations when discussing their fashion choices and familial roles. These patterns suggest persistent sexism in celebrity journalism, potentially influencing public perceptions of women in the …
Who’S Asking?: Perception, Success, And Negotiation Dynamics In Library Acquisitions, Amy Pham
Who’S Asking?: Perception, Success, And Negotiation Dynamics In Library Acquisitions, Amy Pham
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
“Women don’t ask.” The titular phrase of a groundbreaking work from Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever that cemented the popular belief that women are bad negotiators. But are women bad negotiators? Does the gender divide in negotiations intersect with a racial divide? In a field defined by its history of feminization and white women majority, how does this affect librarians? This presentation will draw a line through two decades of literature to examine trends of negotiation outcomes currently underrepresented in library research and share the results of an interview study exploring experiences in academic library acquisition negotiations.

The Menagerie Of Berggasse 19: An Animal Studies Re-Reading Of Freud’S Classic Case Studies, Samuel Weeks, Beatrice Barjon
College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers
This article explores Freud’s original engagement with animal symbols, characters, and stories in his case studies “Little Hans,” “The Rat Man,” and “The Wolf Man.” Employing insights from animal studies, the article examines Freud’s views on the human-animal continuum as well as the phenomena of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, via which human characteristics are affixed to animals and animal characteristics to humans. Also examined is the symbolism surrounding the animals appearing in the fairy tales referenced by Freud’s patients, including “Little Red Riding Hood.” We end by considering the contributions that Freud can make to the expanding field of animal studies.
Role Of Eye-Tracking Technology And Software Algorithms In Enhancing Adhd Detection And Diagnosis: A Systematic Literature Review, Lauren E. Perkins
Role Of Eye-Tracking Technology And Software Algorithms In Enhancing Adhd Detection And Diagnosis: A Systematic Literature Review, Lauren E. Perkins
Honors College Theses
This systematic literature review explores the role of eye-tracking technology and software algorithms in enhancing the detection and diagnosis of ADHD. ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting both children and adults, is traditionally diagnosed through behavioral assessments, which may lack objectivity. Recent studies suggest that eye-tracking, specifically focusing on saccades, fixations, and blink rates, offers the potential for more accurate and objective measures of ADHD. The review examines clinical trials, observational studies, and machine learning research to assess the correlation between ADHD and eye movement patterns. Results indicate that individuals with ADHD exhibit distinct eye movement patterns, which can be quantified …

“I Learned A Lot Of Things That I Felt Already In My Heart”: Fatherhood Meanings And Dilemmas In Residential Treatment, Jared V. Worwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wanting to maintain or create a connection with their child, fathers in residential treatment face challenges as they navigate physical separation, restricted interaction, and substance use stigma. However, parenting services that help fathers navigate these parenting challenges in residential programs are few and rarely studied. Working alongside a local parenting non-profit, Champions for Children, this dissertation evaluated a visitation playgroup for fathers in residential treatment and their children while also seeking theoretical insight into how fathers make meaning of fatherhood during residential treatment. A study design informed by engaged communication scholarship and the phronetic, iterative approach is used to collect …

Infusing Adverse Childhood Experiences Research Across The Cacrep Core Curriculum, Cara M. Thompson, Alexander M. Fields, Dodie Limberg, Krys Whitty
Trauma Counseling and Resilience
Approximately two-thirds of the United States population experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that are associated with increased risk for negative physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. Research on the effects of ACEs is largely conducted and published outside of counseling fields, yet has direct implications for counselors in the conceptualization, assessment, and interventions for a variety of complaints presented by clients across the lifespan and in any treatment setting. Integrating ACEs research into foundational counseling courses can prepare counselors-in-training (CITs) to recognize the impact of ACEs for clients and identify which interventions will promote client wellness. In this article, we …

Inequalities by disability status in college outcomes contribute to inequalities throughout adulthood in multiple domains. As the share of students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD increases on college campuses, research is needed on how best to support these undergraduates, both through formal and informal means. We integrate the social and medical models of disability with data on nearly 17,000 young adults in the US, who typically finished high school in 2013, and find that formal-disability-programming relates negatively to college enrollment but has no apparent bearing on college persistence. Among youth with similar sociodemographic backgrounds and comparable end of high school …
Gender, Parenthood, And Crime: What People Expect When You’Re Expecting, Madelyn Blaser
Gender, Parenthood, And Crime: What People Expect When You’Re Expecting, Madelyn Blaser
Honors Thesis
Decades of research have underscored the importance of personal demographics on criminal sentencing outcomes. Race and gender have gained increasing attention within this area, while parental status, particularly expectant parenthood, has largely been neglected. The current study seeks to examine the influence that an offender’s gender and parental status have on how they are viewed by the public. Using a vignette-style survey of American adults, this paper examines how gender and parental status influences public perception of an offender’s character. The survey also highlights the impacts that gender and parental status have on perceptions of a fair correctional outcome. Results …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Risk Factors, Protective Factors, And Intervention Strategies For School Shooters, Emily Michelle Hudson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over 1,000 lives have been lost in school shootings in the United States. Many school shooters are current or former students ages 12 to 18, predisposed to risk factors (e.g., mental illness, bullying, trauma). Teachers have a crucial role in school safety, but their voices are underrepresented regarding school shooting interventions. Guided by the social ecological model, this generic qualitative research explored teachers’ perspectives of the risk factors, protective factors, and intervention strategies for school shootings. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 10 secondary education teachers from various states in the United States. The collected data were then thematically …
