Crisis Without Cops: Trauma-Informed Mental Health Care For Bipoc Communities, Amanda Carson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

This policy paper advocates for a structural transformation in mental health crisis response, moving beyond police-led interventions toward trauma-informed, community-rooted models grounded in public health and equity. Drawing on Critical Race Theory (CRT), neuroscience, and program evaluations of models like CAHOOTS, 988, Denver’s STAR, and Durham’s HEART, it examines how systemic racism, institutional mistrust, and implicit bias contribute to disproportionate harm for BIPOC individuals. The paper highlights the effectiveness of peer-led, culturally responsive alternatives that reduce force, hospitalization, and disengagement from care. Using Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Framework, it proposes actionable, scalable policy strategies supported by recent federal momentum, including the …

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis May 2025

Jewish Contributions To The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Ashley Davis

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela (1995) wrote, "I have foundJews to be more broad-minded than most Whites on the issues of race and politics, perhaps because they themselves have historically been victims of prejudice" (p. 91). The centuries of persecution faced by Jews engrained into J ewish teachings and culture a strong sense of morality and pushed them towards social and political activism. In South Africa, while White Jews were considered a part of the privileged minority, they faced discrimination and blatant anti-Semitism. Their privileged position as Whites and simultaneous ethnic status as 'lesser' than …

Waffles And Spaghetti: The Effects Of Cognitive Processing Methods On Team Performance And Communication, Jonah Daniel Browning

Masters Theses

The goal of this thesis is to shed light on a practical method for resolving conflicts in team environments that stem from miscommunications brought on by differing cognitive processes. Our brains use different cognitive processing techniques to make sense of and explore the vast amount of information the world presents them on a daily, even hourly basis. Each person has their own thinking style which influences how teams collaborate and problem solve. However, miscommunication can often arise when individuals fail to recognize and adapt to the varying processing methods, which can lead to frustration and inefficiency.

This research seeks to …

Interteach: The Effects Of Active Engagement Compared To Passive Lectures, Bridget A. Barrett May 2025

Interteach: The Effects Of Active Engagement Compared To Passive Lectures, Bridget A. Barrett

Thesis Projects

Previous research has indicated how Boyce and Hineline’s (2002) interteaching technique is an effective teaching approach compared to traditional methods. Although researchers have examined the efficacy of various components within interteaching, few have altered the lecture component to increase active engagement. Saville et al., (2011) compared the effects of lectures (delayed, regular, and none), concluding no significant difference in performance between delayed and regular lectures within interteaching. Although delaying the lecture showed no difference in performance, the study concluded that removing the lecture component affected test scores. The current study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of the lecture component …

Resilient Personalities: Exploring The Psychological Resilience Of Young Adults Through The Hexaco Model Of Personality, Ekaterina Belous

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study explores the intricate relationship between personality traits and psychological resilience in young adults aged 18-25. Family Mealtime Experience Of Traditional Fathers Post-Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study, Eric C. Tibbs

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In 2020, COVID-19 impacted the world and transformed the way individuals and families operated and functioned daily. Lockdowns and restrictions forced families to stay home and find alternative ways of providing and living concerning employment, education, and family functioning. One particular area impacted by this phenomenon was how families operated and conducted family meals. During COVID-19, increases in family mealtime were seen to take place but little evidence was found regarding the quality of these mealtimes, the father’s experience, and what family functioning looked like after COVID-19. While family functioning and mealtimes during COVID-19 have been examined and analyzed over …

Comparative Efficacy Of Combined Versus Singular Auditory Alpha-Theta Brainwave Entrainment And Hypnotherapy Modalities In Chronic Pain Management, Jennifer Nicole Leavitt

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This experimental quantitative research, a randomized controlled trial, evaluated combined efficacy of auditory alpha-theta brainwave entrainment (BWE) and hypnotherapy in chronic pain management versus each modality alone. Chronic pain is a serious clinical challenge that may benefit from novel, nonpharmacological interventions. Previous studies have demonstrated benefits of both BWE and hypnotherapy for pain; but research on combined effects was not identified. This study hypothesized that a synergistic approach would offer superior pain relief compared to singular modalities. The study utilized a randomized controlled trial design with a sample size of 38 participants, initially, aged 25 to 65 years old, recruited …

The study was theoretically grounded in the framework of Job Resources (JD-R), which integrated positive psychology to guide the research process. The JD-R framework is a model for work that shows how stress in ministry happens when the demands on clergy are greater than the resources they have, including positive psychology, to handle those demands. The …

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the experience of vicarious traumatization of Black clergy who serve congregations that are exposed to …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries (ACL) are the most common severe season ending or career ending injury (Petushek et al. 2019). One ACL injury costs the individual and healthcare system $38,000 which includes surgery and rehabilitative costs (Petushek et al., 2019). However, this amount does not account for the psychological effect of ACL injuries on the athletes. For all athletes, a major determinant in the decision to undergo ACL reconstruction surgery is the goal of returning to sport, but only 50% of athletes return to sport following ACL surgical intervention (Ardern et al., 2011). As females are up to three times …
