Official And Unofficial Civil Religious Discourse, Steven R. Goldzwig

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay discusses Roderick P. Hart's unique contribution to the scholarly investigation of civil religion in America. The essay also comments on traditional rhetorical constructions of civil religious discourse manifest in the presidential public address of George W. Bush. The essay concludes by offering evaluative commentary on three sets of innate tensions that complicate rhetorical constructions of civil religion: Church and state, republicanism and liberalism, and pluralism and secularism.

Consortia And Institutional Partnerships For Community Development, Mitchell R. Williams Jan 2002

Consortia And Institutional Partnerships For Community Development, Mitchell R. Williams

Special Topics, General

The need for effective community development to address social, economic, and environmental issues is perhaps stronger now than at any other time. Making communities functional and livable is critically important to our society. There is a renewed interest in using the resources of higher education to assist communities and regions through community development initiatives (Livermore and Midgley, 1998; Usnick, Shove, and Gissy, 1997), To illustrate the contribution of colleges and universities to building sustainable communities, this chapter examines the development of community leaders through institutional partnerships and consortia involving different types of institutions of higher education.

On November 8 and 9, 2001, city, county, state, and federal officials; farmers; ranchers; reporters; environmentalists; and a wide variety of interested citizens met at Albertson College of Idaho to discuss the future of rural Idaho. They were brought together, in the words of the Andrus Center chairman, Cecil Andrus, “to focus on the challenges that we face in rural Idaho and on the solutions that just might be available to us.” Carolyn Washburn, Executive Editor of the Idaho Statesman, described the conference goal: “to find options that not only bring jobs and money but that also honor the traditions …

Review Of Communities, Development And Sustainability Across Canada Edited By John T. Pierce And Ann Dale, Neil Gilson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Communities, Development and Sustainability Across Canada is intended to serve as a synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. Twelve essays by different authors discuss diverse theoretical and analytical perspectives and promote a variety of actions related to implementing sustainable development at the community level. The editors' introduction promises that the book will "highlight the importance of community as a critical link in achieving sustainable development." To this end, contributors were instructed to provide readers with both "retrospective and prospective analyses" and to make concrete proposals for action. Individual authors responded by producing work that consistently …

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr Oct 2001

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I turn to Judith Butler to clarify my term corporate globalization trouble as well as to explain why this trouble should be situated in gendered terms regarding power, visibility, and subjectivity inequities. [1] Butler describes deviant gender identities failing to coincide with the matrix of intelligibility: precisely because certain kinds of 'gender identities' fail to conform to those norms of cultural intelligibility, they appear only as developmental failures or logical impossibilities from within that domain. Their persistence and proliferation, however, provide critical opportunities to expose the limits and regulatory aims of that domain of intelligibility and, …

Adapting The Habitat For Humanity Model To Sabah, Malaysia, Rozita Abdul Manap

Masters Theses

Building sustainable housing and community developments through the Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) homeownership program, is one of the many ways that has successfully improved housing standards for low-income communities in the U.S. Findings show that this model can be used as a mechanism to stimulate serious programs and as an alternative to improve and solve housing problems.

This study focuses on how the Habitat for Humanity model can be applied towards increasing the benefits to the community in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Located on Borneo Island, Sabah is the second largest state in the Federation of Malaysia, but is regarded …

Shared-Resource Housing: A Contemporary Approach To Community Living, José Alvarez, Danelle Isenhart, Mike Liefeld, Jeff Thierfelder, Jesse Winterowd

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

In February of2001, Sustainable Communities Northwest (SCNW), a local nonprofit housing developer specializing in sustainable development, contacted Portland State University's Planning Workshop with a request for assistance. Sustainable Communities Northwest was interested in the possibility of converting an apartment building into condominiums to create affordable homeownership opportunities for low-and moderate-income families. ]nspired by recent market rate cohousing projects in Portland and elsewhere, SCNW was also seeking to incorporate aspects of community-oriented housing into this development. Sustainable Communities Northwest was interested in evaluating if a sustainable, affordable, community-oriented condominium conversion concept would be feasible in the Portland area housing market.

In The Eye Of The Storm: Humanitarian Ngos, Complex Emergencies, And Conflict Resolution, Janice Gross Stein May 2001

In The Eye Of The Storm: Humanitarian Ngos, Complex Emergencies, And Conflict Resolution, Janice Gross Stein

Peace and Conflict Studies

The challenges faced by non-governmental organizations seeking to mitigate violence within the context of “complex humanitarian emergencies” create new dilemmas and require new strategies. These emergencies arise from violence inflicted by one group against another within the confines of a state, from the capture of state institutions by one group, or by the collapse of these institutions and the failure of governance. They develop within a context of disengagement by the major powers and the privatization of emergency assistance.

I first analyze the dimensions of complex humanitarian emergencies, define the dilemmas humanitarian NGOs face and their implications for conflict resolution, …

Student Perceptions Of Service-Learning In The Community College, Ruben Michael Flores May 2001

Student Perceptions Of Service-Learning In The Community College, Ruben Michael Flores

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

United States Census Bureau projections predict that Whites' share of the population should decline from 75% in 1990 to 68% in 2010. Thus, mechanisms must be employed to facilitate cooperation and support among and across people from different ethnic and racial groups. This examination seeks to determine if service-learning is such a mechanism. The researcher utilized student experiences and perspectives, through a mixed qualitative/quantitative study, to determine the impact that a service-learning course had on a diverse group of students attending an urban community college.

The researcher originally sought to determine whether a community college service-learning course changed students' perceptions …

The Longest Commute: The Geography Of Poverty, Employment, And Services, Matthew F. Reidy Sep 2000

The Longest Commute: The Geography Of Poverty, Employment, And Services, Matthew F. Reidy

New England Journal of Public Policy

The average American commuter, alone in an automobile, has a twenty-five-minute ride to work, a not unpleasant, usually overlooked part of the workday. But for millions of low-income people trying to establish themselves in the workforce, getting to work can be a major hurdle because their jobless neighborhoods are not well connected to areas where jobs are plentiful. Theirs is the longest commute. This is not a new problem. The decades-long decline of inner cities and the public transportation system are fairly well-documented phenomena. The time limits instituted as part of the 1996 welfare reform legislation bring a new immediacy …

Factors Encouraging The Growth Of Sustainable Communities: A Jamaican Case Study, Eleanor Wint Sep 2000

Factors Encouraging The Growth Of Sustainable Communities: A Jamaican Case Study, Eleanor Wint

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The concept of sustainable communities assumes a process of social and/or economic development that has as a high priority, the needs of the future generation. However, models of social and economic development employed in developing countries, must rely heavily on political, social and psychological empowerment techniques being employed at the community level, in order to warrant any type of sustainability becoming apparent. A case study taken from Kingston, Jamaica recounts and examines the experience of a Social Work Unit/private company in partnership, becoming involved in a low-income community's drive for sustainable development. The paper will reflect on the intervention, the …

Enabling Business - Community Partnerships, Seema Gupta Jun 2000

Enabling Business - Community Partnerships, Seema Gupta

IIMB Management Review

The decade of the 1990s has perhaps seen the most profound changes in global economic structures. The effects of structural adjustment and globalisation and the emergence of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have meant that the role of business has dramatically changed throughout the world. Statistics of the number of corporations that are larger than nation-states abound and only illustrate the importance of the corporate sector and its impact on the world order.

Who Are The Stakeholders In Environmental Risk Decisions - How Should They Be Involved, Mary R. English Jun 2000

Who Are The Stakeholders In Environmental Risk Decisions - How Should They Be Involved, Mary R. English

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

[Excerpt] "In the United States, as in other countries, public participation in environmental policy decisions has come a long way. In its infancy, it was limited to public hearings concerning decisions that were, for all practical purposes, "done deals." Overturning public agency decisions could be accomplished only through expensive, often protracted, usually futile court cases, and then only if the issue was justiciable and the plaintiff had the funds and standing to sue. In recent decades - especially since the 1960s - opportunities for public participation in the U.S. have been overhauled. Access to documents has been assured through federal …

Community Sustainability Through Citizen Leadership, Wayne N. Monsen, Barbara A. Toren Apr 2000

Community Sustainability Through Citizen Leadership, Wayne N. Monsen, Barbara A. Toren

Theses and Graduate Projects

The origination of two projects, their development and implementation, described in this paper, illustrate a concept of non-partisan citizen leadership. The report begins with a discourse on the over-arching theme of community sustainability through discussions of our complex world and citizen participation in democracy. This leadership concept is embodied within the context of two projects, the Rural Community Leadership Project, and the Sustainability Forums Project.

Methodologies to examine community sustainability used by both projects described in this thesis were designed to foster proactive citizen leadership, which will help to plan their community's future. It provides for project participants at the …
