Dennis Rodman, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 1997

Dennis Rodman, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Once upon a time he was the scourge of the NBA. He skipped practices and road trips; head-butted two players and then a referee; threw a bag of ice at his coach in San Antonio; used profanity in a live post-game interview; and kicked a television cameraman in the groin at a game in the Target Center. All of this earned him 24 games in suspensions, a suspension from one playoff series, and one indefinite suspension, $67,000 in fines, and millions in lost wages.

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is always one little item that catches the eye; the one that both embodies and summarizes the excess. This year for me it is the Little Penny Commercial. Here in Fantasyland they have been touting the making of this little obscenity of American excess for the past several weeks. Celebrities have been rolling in and out of town, in and out of their limos and private jets, to be seen in this year's breathlessly awaited Super Bowl commercial. The parties have been numerous, the celebrity watching prime, and the press coverage worthy of the outbreak of World War III.

Coaching And The Abuse Of Authority, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The breakdown of authority is often cited as a primary cause of the disorders and maladies of society. The loss of respect for authority is seen as a major problem among the young. Many of the symbols of authority have lost their luster and seem no longer capable of evoking deference.

Super Bowl Xxxi, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars meet in Super Bowl XXXI Pete Rozelle will come back to present the trophy. He will do so not only to symbolize the extraterrestrial character of the event, but also to symbolize how deeply Rozelle's legacy of parity has become ingrained into the fabric of the National Football League.

Crisis Management And Negotiation In Professional Sports : The Leadership Of The Commissioner, Eric Hoffman Jan 1997

Crisis Management And Negotiation In Professional Sports : The Leadership Of The Commissioner, Eric Hoffman

Honors Theses

My research has yielded two distinctive types of literature which I will be combining in my research to develop logical conclusions that will provide support for the basic hypothesis: The ability of a commissioner to effectively exercise leadership skills in crisis and negotiation has a correlated effect upon the popularity and marketability of the sport. The two categories of literature are leadership textbooks and newspaper articles primarily written by sports journalists.

The main hypothesis that will be tested in this research project is that when a commissioner competently exercises crisis management, conflict resolution, and communication skills in the eyes of …

Pete Roselle, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1996

Pete Roselle, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Some called him the Pope of the National Football League. Others saw him as a minor deity of the mid-twentieth century's religious devotion to sport. Whatever the perspective, it is clear that Alvin "Pete" Rozelle is among the most significant figures in the history of Sport in America and the world in the Twentieth Century.

Jerry Reinsdorf's Smoking Gun And Baseball Labor Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1996

Jerry Reinsdorf's Smoking Gun And Baseball Labor Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They called him The Old Roman. In 1919 Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox so angered his players with low salaries and his cheapskate ways that they turned on him and fixed the World Series. In 1996 White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf so angered his fellow owners by his high salaries and wild spending that they turned on him, reversed their vote of the previous three weeks, and approved the new baseball collective bargaining agreement. Maybe they should call Reinsdorf, the New Roman, or Roman Nouveau.

Nick Anderson Accused: Don't Rush To Judgement, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Last Wednesday Nick Anderson of the Magic called a press conference to deny that he had raped a woman last February. It was an emotional scene at which a tearful Anderson told the press that a complaint had been filed with Orlando police in early October, and that he had been threatened with public exposure by the Pan African InterNational Movement (PAIN) unless he paid them $600,000.

Holyfield And Tyson - When Magic Play At Arena, City Loses Money, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

A week after the Boston College story broke the gamblers took a bath, not on college football but on the godfather of sports gambling, boxing. Evander Holyfield's upset of the century over Mike Tyson was a disaster for those who set the odds and cover the bets. With odds running 25-1 to open and dropping to 5-1 just before the fight, bookmakers lost several million dollars. Major money was placed on Holyfield in the last few days, at least some of it coming from the Holyfield camp itself, and the smart money on the favorite never surfaced as betting closed.

Boston College: Fixing And Gambling In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

The Braves / Yankees World Series, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

When Charlie Hayes went falling into the third-base dugout and failed to make the catch on Mark Lemke's pop foul to end the sixth and final game of the World Series there was a brief moment of hope when Braves fans thought just maybe fate had turned. It had not. On the next pitch Hayes made the catch down the third-base side near the stands and the 1996 World Series was history. Only five nights earlier Atlanta fans had been talking about the possibility of a sweep, but not the one that occurred.

Andruw Jones And Curacao - World Series Begins, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I had never heard of a language called Papiamentu and I had only a vague notion that Curacao was an island off the north coast of Venezuela. I suspect that by now Atlanta Braves fans are learning more and more about the largest island in the Netherlands Antillies and its capital city, Willemstad.

Yankees, Jeffer Maier, George And Reggie - Braves And Cards, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

While sitting around waiting for Gene Budig's resignation as American League president, or even for someone in the press to suggest that it might be appropriate, I have been trying to see as much of the American and National League Championship Series as possible--or the LCS as it is called, which sounds more like a religious cult than a sporting event. There has been some interesting baseball and even more interesting American melodrama.

Baseball's Musical Managerial Chairs: Minority Hiring Weak, Richard C. Crepeau Oct 1996

Baseball's Musical Managerial Chairs: Minority Hiring Weak, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past few weeks I have noticed a familiar phenomenon in baseball which is reflective of sport generally. The annual purge of the managerial ranks in baseball has begun after a relatively quiet regular season. The most spectacular of the regular season firings was that of Tommy LaSorda in Los Angeles although it was thinly disguised as a resignation for health reasons. Bill Russell was named interim manager and after some doubts were raised the former shortstop had the interim removed yesterday.

Remarkable Baseball Season Ends, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

A remarkable baseball season came to a raucous close this past weekend casting several shadows over what should be glowing memories as we swing headlong into playoff baseball and the World Series. Any number of great stories, great achievements, and satisfying moments marked this season of record breaking hitting and home runs, and the Texas Rangers/Washington Senators finally reached post-season play.

College Football's Rap Sheet, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

All the color and pageantry of college football have returned. We've already experienced this year's first game of the century, and this year's first game of the decade. It's a wonderful time of year, when footballs fill the air and college athletes fill the courtrooms, police blotters, and the investigative time of the NCAA all across America.

Hockey's Team Canada: Some Painful History, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 1996

Hockey's Team Canada: Some Painful History, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

No one in my neighborhood ran into the streets and fired a gun in the air. The cars along the expressways were neither blinking their lights nor honking their horns. Even in the sports' bars, the community halls of sport in the late 20th century, the event passed without much notice as college football remained the central attraction late last Saturday night. Yet Wayne Gretzky called it "devastating," "a hard loss to swallow," and assumed that his countrymen were crushed.

Great Moments In The Last Two Weeks In Abundance, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In the last few weeks there has been an usual abundance of great moments in the games we love, a deluge of achievements and drama and struggle: Moments that have been historic and moments that have reached those heights of athletic achievement that make us all feel privileged that we were witnesses to greatness, as well as moments that demonstrate the best of human possibilities.
