Partnerships/Community
On behalf of the Maryland Governor's Commission on Service, I am pleased to present the second edition of the Maryland Service Exchange Directory. The Governor's Commission on Service created the Maryland Service Exchange to provide cost-free, program development, technical assistance and training to Maryland's national and community service programs, non-profit and community-based organizations, schools and colleges. At the same time, the Exchange offers a new, innovative opportunity through which Marylanders can volunteer to serve our communities.

The Anchor: 1996
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Sources Of Local Geographic Information, Darrell Napton
Geography Faculty Publications
This guide is a tool to help you find local information. The list is not comprehensive, but is to give you some starting points on your search. The information available will differ from community to community. The premise of this guide is that you will generally find the information that you want if you ask the right PEOPLE, find the right PUBLICATIONS, and look in the right PLACES. This three pronged approach will help you find information that you never knew existed. Sometimes you will be fortunate and find the information that you seek on the first phone call or …

Community Partner Orientation For Service Learning Courses, Service Learning Institute
Guides
We have prepared this manual as a "work in progress" to help you think about the service learning process and practice. We are at a crucial stage in developing service learning infrastructure. We began our work this fall semester supporting 7 courses which involved 160 students in over 30 agency/sites in the Salinas-Seaside-Monterey area. This spring, 24 service learning courses/experiences are being offered as more faculty become involved with extending learning experiences into the community.
We offer you this manual to assist you and inform you of our plans for supporting, monitoring, and evaluating service learning experiences this spring. We …

An Analysis Of The Economic Implications Of The Proposed Merger Between Randolph Township And The Village Of Clayton, Michael V. Wainscott
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This study was conducted to determine the economic implications of the proposed merger between the Village of Clayton and unincorporated Randolph Township, as well as critique the plan laid out by the Merger Commission. The focus of the study was to compare the expenditures of ten area cities with the proposed expenditures of the Merger Commission as described in their May 7 Preliminary Report. In addition, economic trends in the area were examined to fully gauge the impact of the merger on the Northmont area.
It is clear from this study that the proposed budget of the new city will …

Preventive Detention And The Judicial Prediction Of Dangerousness For Juveniles: A Natural Experiment, Jeffery Fagan, Martin Guggenheim
Preventive Detention And The Judicial Prediction Of Dangerousness For Juveniles: A Natural Experiment, Jeffery Fagan, Martin Guggenheim
Faculty Scholarship
Since 1970, legislatures have increasingly relied on preventive detention – detention before trial ordered solely to prevent an accused from committing crime during the pretrial period – as an instrument of social control. Prior to this period, detention before trial was usually ordered only to assure an accused's presence at trial or to ensure the integrity of the trial process by preventing an accused from tampering with witnesses. Today, the majority of states and the federal system have changed their laws to allow judges to detain arrestees who pose a risk to society if released during the pretrial period. Half …

Repeat Violence In The Emergency Department, Jeanne A. Dorsey
Masters Theses
The purpose of this descriptive study was to conduct a secondary analysis of the data set obtained from the Trauma and Emergency Center Violence Project (Dorsey, 1994). Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner
Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
- At 9 a.m. on 31 August 1988, Delta Flight 1141 crashed on take‐off, killing 13 people and leaving 94 survivors. Existing research has furthered our insight into media coverage of disasters but it has not broadened our understanding of disaster narrative interpretations and disaster behaviour education. In total, 24 in‐depth interviews explore reader interpretations of print‐mediated disaster reality and the Delta 1141 disaster. Disaster news stories provide the frames people use to interpret aeroplane disaster behaviour. Concludes the media need to recognize that their pedagogical role extends beyond disaster reporting and includes disaster behaviour information.
