The Homemaker-Home Health Aide, Gary A. Fashimpar, Richard M. Grinnell Jr.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

For the past several years, many social workers have utilized the services of various disciplines as members of interdisciplinary teams as one approach to practice. There is ample evidence that social workers are increasingly beginning to utilize the newly constructed service of the Homemaker-Home Health Aide (H/HHA) when working with various client populations.1 In the United States, there are approximately 74,000 H/HHAs who provide social welfare and health services to the aged, disabled, and chronically ill. 2 By 1985, there is a projected need for three times this number.3

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann Aug 1978

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …

Leisure Preferences Of The Elderly In Bowling Green Nutrition Programs, Lawrence Prochazka

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The objective was to identify the leisure preferences of elderly in Bowling Green Nutrition Programs. This objective was to be accomplished through the utilization of a leisure preference test. Since no leisure preference test was found, the study was significant not only for the results obtained but also to evaluate this new test.

The test was designed after the format utilized in the Edwards Personal Preference Test. Major categories were selected and each was composed of five leisure opportunity statements. Each category was placed in opposition to every other category four times to comprise the test. A test was then …

Perspectives On International-Relations Of Food, Raymond F. Hopkins, D. J. Puchala Jul 1978

Perspectives On International-Relations Of Food, Raymond F. Hopkins, D. J. Puchala

Political Science Faculty Works

The international system of production, distribution and consumption of food is managed by states, corporations and international organizations. International organizations play minor roles in the food regime, principally as arenas for policy coordination among state bureaucracies and as agents for modest multilateral programs. All of these actors work within the framework of aset of norms, rules and practices that constitutes a global food regime. Currently, the regime is undergoing change. Growing demand for food, tighter connections among markets, and greater reliance on technology have increased theimportance of international adjustments. American preponderance in shaping regime features and insuring food security through …

Toward Innovation In Global Food Regime, D. J. Puchala, Raymond F. Hopkins Jul 1978

Toward Innovation In Global Food Regime, D. J. Puchala, Raymond F. Hopkins

Political Science Faculty Works

The market-oriented focus of the global food regime, as it functioned from the late 1940s to the early 1970s, has proved inadequate. Preoccupation with perfecting markets led food policy makers to underemphasize the need for increased production in the Third World. It also led them to exaggerated attention to short-term surplus disposal and too little concern about scarcity. The regime emerged from a context in which unilateral actions and domestic considerations prevailed. This resulted in regime pathologies in which mutually beneficial international food solutions were not reached and multilateral coordination to analyze and solve food problems was discouraged. Such regime …

Some Critical Questions In The Political Economy Of Social Welfare - The Carter "Welfare Reform" Proposals, L. K. Northwood Jul 1978

Some Critical Questions In The Political Economy Of Social Welfare - The Carter "Welfare Reform" Proposals, L. K. Northwood

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to discuss President Carter's welfare reform proposals, appropriately titled, "The Program for Better Jobs and Income." If these proposals are adopted by Congress, they will guide the Administration in its stance toward and its work with the lowest income sectors of the nation: the welfare poor--those who cannot work and must be supported by the government, and the working poor--those who are able to support themselves, but whose yearly income is less than the poverty level.

Consequently, the paper starts with an analysis of what the government documents have to tell us about the …

The Relationship Of Prior Ability And Family Characteristics To School Attendance And School Achievement In Rural Guatemala, Marc Irwin, Patrice L. Engle, Charles Yarbrough, Robert E. Klein, John Townsend

Psychology and Child Development

Data from a longitudinal study in progress were used to investigate the relationships between intellectual ability prior to schooling opportunities and characteristics of family and home environment, and elementary school attendance and performance in 3 rural Guatemalan communities. Pre-school- ing mental test performances, family SES level, and indices of parental values concerning education were all associated with attending or not attending school. Length of school attendance was predicted by pre-schooling mental test scores for girls and by family SES level and parental values for boys. Age at first enrollment was predicted by both pre-schooling mental test scores and family SES …
