Bringing Nature Into The Zoo: Inexpensive Solutions For Zoo Environments, David Hancocks May 1980

Bringing Nature Into The Zoo: Inexpensive Solutions For Zoo Environments, David Hancocks

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

Animals in captivity have traditionally been kept in sterile and inappropriate environments. Typically this situation still prevails in zoos. Cages are designed only for restraint of the animals, expediency for the public, and convenient maintenance by keepers. The animals' behavioral needs are often ignored. By using nature as a norm, and by using natural materials, the spatial and temporal environment of a captive animal can be easily and greatly enriched. Several examples which have been used at Woodland Park Zoological Gardens are discussed. Their application and expansion are appropriate for most urban zoos

The Elderly Have Spoken: Is Anybody Listening? The Impact Of Fuel Costs On The Elderly, Scott A. Bass, Richard Rowland

Gerontology Faculty Publication Series

This report contains the findings of a study carried out by the Gerontology Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston concerning the effects of the escalating fuel costs on the lives of the elderly who must pay for their own heat. Through the use of an interview format known as "modified critical incident" technique, a team of mostly elderly students spent several weeks during the winter of 1980 eliciting responses from more than 100 elderly individuals from throughout the greater Boston area. Not surprisingly , this study has revealed a number of profound impacts that the radical turn of economic …

The Good Life: Who's Practicing Healthy Life-Styles?, Ann S. Ford, W. Scott Ford May 1980

The Good Life: Who's Practicing Healthy Life-Styles?, Ann S. Ford, W. Scott Ford

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

With the birth of scientific medicine in the late 1800s, the responsibility for 'health' was increasingly removed from the individual and replaced by a dependence upon medical intervention and required public health measures. Individual responsibility was viewed largely in terms of assuring accessibility for the individual (and his/her family) to the professional health delivery system. The need for health care, therefore, was seen as episodic necessity -- not as a continuing individual responsibility.

Utah Employer Attitudes Towards Sponsoring Day Care For Employees, Diane Hart May 1980

Utah Employer Attitudes Towards Sponsoring Day Care For Employees, Diane Hart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purposes of this study were to: 1) examine and contrast hospital administrator attitudes and manufacturing company president (or manager) attitudes in relation to the possibility of having more Utah employers establish organized day care facilities on sites of employment, and 2) determine which factors of employee composition and available facilities and services affect employer attitudes towards day care involvement.

Information from the questionnaire developed for the study was statistically analyzed by the Pearson r correlation coefficient and one-way analysis of variance. Many factors proved to be statistically significant.

Overall, it was found that hospitals were more interested in day …

The Impact Of Consumerism On Health Care Change: Alternatives For The Future?, Allen W. Imershein, Eugenia T. Miller May 1980

The Impact Of Consumerism On Health Care Change: Alternatives For The Future?, Allen W. Imershein, Eugenia T. Miller

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The quest for consumer participation in the management of health care delivery may have experienced its first signs of success, but the implications of that success are as yet unclear. The establishment of consumer majorities on the newly developed health systems agency (HSA) boards was seen as an important milestone in the development of the consumer movement in America over the last ten years. The initial wave of optimism over the Great Society programs that in part gave birth to the consumer movement has long since vanished, but some of the organizational results of those attempts at innovation have become …

Nutrition Education Needs Assessment For Licensed Group Day Care Centers In The State Of Utah, Almina Barksdale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In November 1977 Congress established the Nutrition Education and Training Program (NETP) with the passage of Public Law 95-166. Section 227.37 of the NETP Regulations (1978) mandates that each state establish a plan of action for the use of any federally appropriated funds earmarked for "nutrition education", and further, the plan should contain a proposal to instruct all students in the state about the nutritional value of foods as well as the relationship between food, nutrition, and health. Section 19 of Public Law 95- 166 stipulates a "needs assessment" as one of the components of NETP and that each state …
