The Vanguard (Vol. 29, No. 2), Mar 1982, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

"The National Indian Lutheran Board has finished another busy and very productive year of operation. During this last year our involvement has continued in terms of promoting positive national policy, work with different Lutheran constituencies, participating with other ethnic groups, continuation of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) grant program, and working as a co-worker with other national Indian organizations.''

That's how Paul Schultz began his annual president's report to the NILB board. More than two dozen board members and consultants attended the three day meeting at Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, AZ.

How can we participate in the vision of a transcultural church? How do individuals and families overcome the survivalism mentality that is spreading across the land? Can we be attuned to the realities of a North/South global church?

The prophet Joel tells us that God's Spirit will lead us: Then we will dream dreams and see visions. Then we will proclaim God's message.

Sandhill Cranes And The Platte River, Gary L. Krapu, Kenneth J. Reinecke, Charles R. Frith Jan 1982

Sandhill Cranes And The Platte River, Gary L. Krapu, Kenneth J. Reinecke, Charles R. Frith

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The waters of many western rivers have been diverted by man for irrigation and other consumptive uses (Ohmart et al. 1977, Johnson 1978). As flows in certain rivers diminished precipitously during this century, numerous conflicts have arisen brought on by changes affecting various interests. The Platte River is such an example. With approximately 69 percent of the annual flows destined for the Platte now removed upstream (Kroonemeyer 1979) and additional projects proposed that would utilize remaining flows, intense competition and widespread concern have developed among the factions relying on the river's flows to meet their needs.

Unnecessary Suffering: Definition And Evidence, Frank Hurnik, Hugh Lehman Jan 1982

Unnecessary Suffering: Definition And Evidence, Frank Hurnik, Hugh Lehman

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

Although it is possible to formulate more robust moral principles than "animals should not be made to suffer unnecessarily," there are significant grounds for doubting these more robust principles. But the principle that underlies the dictum regarding unnecessary suffering is generally recognized as valid since denial of it implies that we can do whatever we want with animals. This conclusion is usually considered unacceptable. A determination of any particular instance of suffering is necessary or unnecessary must be based on analysis of the seriousness of the act's purpose that involves the suffering of animals and its relative avoidability, as well …

The Oxford Vegetarians - A Personal Account, Peter Singer Jan 1982

The Oxford Vegetarians - A Personal Account, Peter Singer

Human Health Collection

People coming together more or less by accident can have a catalytic effect on each other, so that each achieves more than he or she would have done alone. The Bloomsbury Group--G.E. Moore, Virginia and Leonard Woolf, E.M. Forster, J.M. Keynes, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Lytton Strachey and others--is a famous example. It would be immodest to suggest that the group of vegetarians who were together in Oxford from 1969 to about 1971 can compare with these illustrious figures; yet if the animal liberation movement ever succeeds in transforming our attitudes to other species, the Oxford Vegetarians may one day …

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner Jan 1982

No Need To Be Boxed In: Group Pens And Grain For Veal Calves, Michael S. Mosner

Agribusiness Collection

My family has been in the wholesale veal business for 30 years. The basis of this business has been various breeds of female beef calves that are slaughtered at less than 500 lb. These calves are allowed to suck from cows and graze until they are ready for market. Beef calves, however, tend to vary in quality and quantity depending on the tjme of the year that they are purchased and raised. Generally, calves become scarce in the spring, when feeders are buying calves to put out on pasture. Then, in the summer and fall, large numbers of calves usually …

Reporting Requirements Under The Animal Welfare Act: Their Inadequacies And The Public's Right To Know, Mark Solomon, Peter C. Lovenheim Jan 1982

Reporting Requirements Under The Animal Welfare Act: Their Inadequacies And The Public's Right To Know, Mark Solomon, Peter C. Lovenheim

Laws and Legislation Collection

We conclude from the analysis that the Reporting System, as presently administered, fails to achieve its primary statutory objective: it does not provide APHIS with information sufficient to demonstrate that researchers have used pain-relieving drugs "appropriately" and in accordance with "professionally acceptable standards." The chief reasons for this failing are (1) regulations and guidelines do not define "pain" or "distress," (2) regulations and guidelines do not adequately define "routine procedures," and (3) regulations and guidelines do not require meaningful explanations for the withholding of pain-relieving drugs in procedures acknowledged to cause pain.

The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster Jan 1982

The Economics Of Farm Animal Welfare, A. J. F. Webster

Agribusiness Collection

The number of ways that one can be nice or nasty to animals are legion. This article will consider only one very specific aspect of farm animal welfare, namely, those systems of intensive animal production in which the system itself, irrespective of the quality of the stockmanship within the system, appears to restrict the normal behavior of farm animals to an unacceptable degree. The systems that were considered by the House of Commons Select Committee on Agriculure (1981) include egg production from hens in battery cages, production of veal from calves deprived of solid food and isolated in wooden crates, …

The Cultural Landscape Of. The Pawnees, Richard White Jan 1982

The Cultural Landscape Of. The Pawnees, Richard White

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In June of 1871, at the Pawnee village on the Loup River, the chiefs and soldiers of the four tribes of the Pawnee Nation met in council with their Quaker agent and superintendent. The council convened in the midst of the spring ceremonies; the women had already planted the fields and the priests had performed the Young Mother Corn ritual that ended the planting cycle. As it had for centuries, the attention of the Pawnees shifted to the mixed-grass plains hundreds of miles to the west where, in the first of their semiannual hunts, they would soon seek simultaneously to …

The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler Jan 1982

The Effect Of Physical Fitness Training On Academic Performance, Annette M. Butler

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In elderly psychiatric individuals, physical fitness training has been related to improved cognitive performance on several scales (Powell, 1974; Stamford, Hambacher, & Fallica, 1974). The results with normal adults and children, however, are not clear (Folkins & Sime, 1981). The purpose of the present study was to test the effects of cardiovascular fitness traini~g on cognitive functioning, relevant to academic performance, in college students. The following measures were used: Shipley- Institute of Living Scale, Rotter's Internal-External Control of Reinforcement Scale, a Student Learning Styles / Questionnaire, self~report data indicating hours spent studying, quality of studies, and mental alertness during daily …
