Health patterns in the Pueblo III (A.D. 1100-1225) population from Carter Ranch Pueblo were investigated in skeletal remains from 34 individuals. Childhood health disruptions were assessed using stature, linear enamel hypoplasias, and Harris lines. Periostitis, arthritis, anemia, trauma, and dental pathology were also observed. Although the low juvenile representation is probably an effect of age-biased mortuary practices, results suggest a healthy population compared to larger southwestern sites. Trauma levels at the site are quite high, possibly indicating burial practices differentiated on the ability to work or other health criteria. Additionally, a number of genetic anomalies are present, suggesting an isolated …

Arab Women: A Profile Of Diversity And Change, Nahid Toubia, Amira Bahyeldin, Nadia Hijab, Heba Abdel Latif
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The status of Arab women is the subject of much speculation, generalization, and stereotyping by those inside and outside the region. The paucity of objective, accessible information makes Arab women one of the least understood social groups. The aim of this book is to help correct misconceptions about Arab women by introducing systematic information for 21 Arab countries. Widely published international statistical data, mostly from the United Nations and the World Bank, were used for the comparisons. These datasets are compiled from country reports, national surveys, and aggregated smaller studies. They are by no means comprehensive or devoid of inaccuracies, …

Reproductive Health
In 1992, the Population Council established the Family Planning Operations Research and Training (FPORT) Program in the Philippines. It brought together program managers and regional researchers to identify problem areas that might benefit from operations research. From Western Visayas (Region VI), the City Population Office (CPO) of Iloilo City in collaboration with the Social Science Research Institute of the Central Philippine University, identified a problem concerning the poor performance of volunteer family planning (FP) workers and undertook to study it. The study focused on the Barangay Service Point Officers (BSPOs) who assist in the delivery of FP services under the …

Reproductive Cycles In Two Arkansas Skinks In The Genus Eumeces (Sauria: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth
Reproductive Cycles In Two Arkansas Skinks In The Genus Eumeces (Sauria: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Reproductive cycles of the southern coal skink (Eumeces anthracinus pluvialis) and the five-lined skink (E. fasciatus) were studied by examining museum specimens collected in Arkansas. Histological preparations of testes from each species revealed eight spermatogenic stages. Male coal skinks produced sperm by late February, at least one month before male five-lined skinks. Height of the testicular cycle (maximum sperm production-stage 6 = spermiogenesis) in E. a. pluvialis occurred in March and early April, whereas in E. fasciatus, spermiogenesis reached a peak in May. Testicular recrudescence began in late May in E. a. pluvialis and mid-July in E. fasciatus. The reproductive …

Assessing The Distracting Viewing Environment For Televised Sports And Its Relationship To Advertising Recall, James Pokrywczynski
Assessing The Distracting Viewing Environment For Televised Sports And Its Relationship To Advertising Recall, James Pokrywczynski
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
The viewing of televised sports, like other television viewing situations, is often accompanied by many audience distractions. These distractions, which are particularly acute in the viewing of televised sports, include group viewing, wagering, and food and beverage consumption. All these activities may influence the impact of advertising placed within sports programs, which totals almost $3 billion annually.
This study uses reports of the activities listed above by individuals while viewing pro football's Super Bowl and gathered through a day-after national coincidental sample, to assess the relationship of these distractions to advertising recall. Regression results show that the consumption of certain …

Most scholars are understandably preoccupied with the impact of Europeans on native peoples who were passive, unwilling, or resistant participants in that contact. We present in this chapter a different case. The Missouri River tribes, including the Omaha and Ponca, willingly engaged in relations with Euramericans, especially in the fur trade that dominated interaction in this region. The time frame for this study is 1780- 1820, a period when interaction between individual traders and Native Americans was replaced by the dominance of the American Fur Company in organized exploitation of the Missouri River lands and peoples. This involvement later contributed …

Service Learning For All Students, Carl I. Fertman
Service Learning For All Students, Carl I. Fertman
Service Learning, General
We are witnessing a transformation in education. Again and again we hear that we are in times of diversification, collaboration, systemic change, and transition. Although these terms apply to cooperative efforts between groups, they stem from the realization that such efforts can efficiently support and prepare students to face increasingly complex challenges, opportunities, and problems. Service learning is a part of this transformation.
Service learning rightly has been called the education of empowerment. It builds self-esteem, renews curiosity about learning, develops interpersonal skills, stirs leadership development, rekindles work and service ethics, and brings the world of careers closer to home. …

Planting The Seeds Of Hope: Research And Action On Body Image Of University Students, Michelle Poechman Fisher
Planting The Seeds Of Hope: Research And Action On Body Image Of University Students, Michelle Poechman Fisher
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A number of researchers have expressed concern regarding the growing prevalence of body dissatisfaction, especially among North American women. Such body dissatisfaction is often linked to dieting, weight concerns, excessive exercise, poor nutrition, and eating disorders. In order to expand our awareness and understanding of university students’ needs with regards to issues concerning body image, a needs assessment was conducted in two universities located in southwestem Ontario. In focus groups and individual interviews, students were asked directly about the issues they find most troublesome, their experiences in the recovery process, and their needs for supportive and preventive interventions. In order …

Responsibilities Of Worksite Health Promotion Directors, Anne Bernice Mcgown Patneaude
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to identify the areas of responsibility that were perceived by worksite health promotion directors as most important to the success of their organization's health promotion program. A survey instrument was designed and mailed to 111 health promotion directors in the state of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that were 1992 members of the Association of Fitness in Business (AFB). Subjects were asked to rate the importance that 27 responsibilities associated with four areas of competence receive within their organization. The results are based on the responses of 23 (20.72%) of these directors. Females represented 7 …

Otitis Media, Mastoiditis, And Infracranial Lesions In Two Plains Indian Children, Robert W. Mann, Douglas W. Owsley, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
One disease condition that is common to nearly all children is otitis media, also known as middle ear disease. Although most people speak of it as a middle ear "infection," other causes such as neoplasm (tumor) can result in manifestations and symptoms mimicking an infectious process. This paper presents findings related to osseous lesions in two Indian children, approximately three to five years of age, who died with otitis media and infracranial lesions. Through macroscopic and radiographic analysis, it is possible to show that one child probably suffered from tuberculosis and the other from histiocytosis X. From an epidemiological and …
Securing Health Or Just Health Care? The Effect Of The Health Care System On The Health Of America, Lawrence O. Gostin
Securing Health Or Just Health Care? The Effect Of The Health Care System On The Health Of America, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The author first analyzes why the prevention of illness and promotion of health provide the leading justification for the government to act for the welfare of the population. His analysis focuses principally on the foundational importance of health for human happiness, the exercise of rights and privileges, and the formation of family and social relationships. He explains why health care, although critically important; is not the only, nor even the most important, determinant of health. Most morbidity and mortality in the United States is attributable to environmental conditions, pathogens, and human behavior, which are all more responsive to population-based interventions …

How To Survive Your First Year As The...Cheerleading Coach, Molly M. Maes-Hamer
Theses
Interscholastic activities are intended to supplement the secondary curricular program. These activities can provide the student with educational experiences and learning outcomes that contribute toward the development of good citizenship. This can be accomplished only when the emphasis is placed upon teaching "through school activities." Interscholastic activities can be justified only when this is a primary philosophy and purpose.
Cheerleaders are a very important component of the interscholastic program. Being a cheerleader is a privilege and honor. Cheerleaders should be the school's most effective student leaders. They have the responsibility to serve as a support group for the various interscholastic …

A Comparative Study Of Primary Preventive Behaviors And Secondary Preventive Behaviors Among Michigan Adults, Jing Chang
A Comparative Study Of Primary Preventive Behaviors And Secondary Preventive Behaviors Among Michigan Adults, Jing Chang
Dissertations
Many researchers have documented the range and extent of the health preventive behaviors. However, previous studies have generally focused on either the contact with medical professionals (secondary preventive care) or compliance with their recommendations (primary preventive care). Some have treated the two types of behaviors as one and related them to social demographic characteristics and socio-structural conditions (e.g., access to medical service). There have been very few studies that have compared the two sets of preventive behaviors. This study takes a first step to explore the correlates of secondary preventive activities and compare them with the correlates of primary preventive …
Transformational Leadership: The Relationship Between Consciousness, Values, And Skills, John E . Schmidt
Transformational Leadership: The Relationship Between Consciousness, Values, And Skills, John E . Schmidt
Dissertations
Leadership is one of the most important, yet least understood, phenomena on earth. Many researchers have investigated leadership traits, activities, behaviors, and processes; yet, until B u m s (1978), few researchers distinguished between leadership that is "transactional" and leadership that is "transformational." Transformational leadership, says Bums, occurs "when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality" (p. 20) .
Since Bums, few studies of transformational leadership have examined leaders who appeal to higher values or leaders who challenge individuals, organizations, and societies …
