Learning English As A Second Language Through Exploring Prenumerical And Numerical Concepts, Maria Angeles Barrero
MA TESOL Collection
The purpose of this project is to present some lesson plans for teachers of English as a second language (ESL) to children in the first years of school to show the potential of numerical concepts to teach ESL. Hopefully reading or looking at the samples in creating units in ESL with numbers as a content matter can give teachers ideas about how to create their own lesson plans using this or different content matter. The project includes a study of the Instructional and Performance Objectives, Teaching Techniques, Visual Aids, as well as Number and Language Games, among other topics.
Exercises In Aural And Oral Skills For Beginning Students Of English, Marcia M. Augustine
Exercises In Aural And Oral Skills For Beginning Students Of English, Marcia M. Augustine
MA TESOL Collection
A collection of pictures and narratives to be used together with the purpose of helping beginning students of English to increase their aural comprehension, become proficient in the oral manipulation of the grammatical structures already in their English language inventory, and utilize the vocabulary in their inventory within these structures. The materials are based on the text "English Through Patterns" by Robert M. Ramsey, Editorial Teide, S.A., Barcelona, Spain, 1971

The Resource Center: An Open Classroom For Teachers, Judith B. Glass
MA TESOL Collection
The Resource Center of the School for International Training's first three-week workshop in methodology for teachers of English as a Second Language was designed to encourage program participants to explore their individual interests independently, to share their ideas and professional experience in a series of ten evening workshops. Materials in the Center included a library of texts and books discussing ESL methodology and theory, collections of games, realia, visual aids for language teaching, and supplies including audio-visual equipment for making original classroom materials. The center was deemed successful, a viable idea for future development.
The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
Department of English: Faculty Publications
I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. This understanding …

Efficacy Of Reinforcement In An Observational Paradigm, Charles M. Krizic
Masters Theses
Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. The third group received direct reinforcement during the test for acquisition. The control group received …

Tree And String Analysis Of A Copala Trique Sentence, Bruce E. Hollenbach, David D. Thomas
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "This paper is simply a presentation of two analyses of the same Copala Trique sentence. The first analysis is done by David Thomas and represents a string analysis, with a distinction between deep structure and surface structure. The second analysis is done by Bruce Hollenbach and represents a tree analysis done from the point of view of generative semantics. We hope that this presentation may be useful to those who might be interested in comparing and contrasting these two analytical techniques."

Mamanwa Paragraphs, Helen W. Miller, Jeanne Miller
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "This paper describes the five contrastive paragraph types in Mamanwa. The five semantic categories of paragraphs are Narrative, Procedural, Explanatory, Hortatory, and Dialogue. Form categories on the paragraph level, as on the sentence level, are simple, antithetical, coordinate, and parallel.
"The five semantic categories contrast structurally in (1) the kinds of tagmemes which compose the nucleus of each paragraph type, (2) the kinds of focus and aspect affixes on the verbs in the nucleus, particularly in Narrative versus Procedural paragraphs, (3) the kinds of mode affixes on the verbs, and the kinds of personal pronouns in the …

A Communications Model Of Culture Contact, James A. Yost
A Communications Model Of Culture Contact, James A. Yost
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Most anthropologists currently involved in the study of culture contact recognize the importance of adequate communication for successful transmission of ideas or traits. Some, such as Niehoff, have made explicit the importance they feel it has: "Communication by the innovator is probably the single most important kind of action in which he will engage, since it is a prerequisite for everything else that follows. No ideas or techniques can be transferred from one person to another unless there are channels of communication established to transfer them, and these are the patterns of communication. If no adequate patterns …

A Research Synthesis And Taxonomy Of Six Factors In Impression Formation And Their Effects Upon Communication, Cheryl Lembke
A Research Synthesis And Taxonomy Of Six Factors In Impression Formation And Their Effects Upon Communication, Cheryl Lembke
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
An analysis of the process of impression formation is difficult yet worthwhile - because in any consideration of human relations, numerous allowances for individual differences must be made. As Frank Rarig noted, “the interpersonal relations of any one individual comprise a pattern of particulars peculiar to him alone.”
Solution Shift Performance By Young Children In Concept Learning Tasks, Elizabeth Ann Myers
Solution Shift Performance By Young Children In Concept Learning Tasks, Elizabeth Ann Myers
All Master's Theses
This study required six groups of Ss (four preschool groups, first graders and adults) to solve one of two types of solution shifts: a reversal (R) and a half reversal (HR). It was hypothesized that greater linguistic skill would yield higher performance on the R shift relative to the HR shift. The results of the present study indicated that the gifted Ss, first graders, and adults all performed better on the R shift relative to the HR shift even though problem solving ability in general improved with older Ss. The difference in performance between shifts for the other three groups …
