The Indonesian Propensity To Morally Disengage Scale Short Form: Adaptation And Psychometric Evaluation, Maryam Abidah Masykuroh, Fivi Nurwianti
Psychological Research on Urban Society
Research on moral disengagement has evolved beyond its original focus on children and adolescents to encompass adult populations. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that moral disengagement predicts various antisocial behaviorsamong emerging adults, including findings from Indonesian samples. The present study contributes to this literature by adapting a concise Indonesian version of the moral disengagement measurement scale. This adaptation offers methodological advantages by increasing research flexibility and enabling the examination of broader nomologicalnetworks surrounding moral disengagement, including its antecedents and outcomes. This study adapted the brief 8-item The Propensity to Morally Disengage Scale (S-PMD), which operationalizes Bandura’s eight cognitive mechanisms of moral disengagement. …

Religious Beliefs And Behaviors Of Generation Z, James Knapp
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
Research focused on the religious beliefs and behaviors of Generation Z has been increasing but the number of studies that have produced generalizable findings has been extremely limited. The purpose of this study is to address the scarcity by analyzing responses given by GenZers to eight questions from the General Social Survey which is a well-respected, nationally representative data set. After discussing the findings and comparing them to responses given by Millennials and GenXers, recommendations are provided for ministry leaders who work with members of Generation Z.

Dyslexia is a heritable, neurobiological learning disorder that persistently interferes with reading, spelling, and writing and is distinct from intellectual, visual, or hearing impairments. Although an estimated 15% to 20% of the general population may show symptoms of dyslexia, studies report that 41% to 62% of incarcerated individuals display dyslexia-related characteristics. This beginner’s guide introduces dyslexia for criminal justice, forensic mental health, and legal professionals. It reviews diagnostic considerations, including the distinction between dyslexia and low literacy, the varied cognitive profiles of dyslexia, and the influence of co-occurring conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The article frames the link between dyslexia …

This study examines the history of Islamic science through the paradigmatic shift in agronomic discourse (filāḥah) in Andalusia during the 11th to 12th centuries CE. Employing Thomas Kuhn's paradigm shift theory within his framework of Scientific Revolution, this qualitative research aims to reconstruct the intellectual transformation of the Muslim agronomist community from a magical-speculative orientation toward an empirical-technical one. The study applies a five-stage historical research method topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography in conjunction with the paradigm shift concept, as applied to the major agricultural treatises of Andalusia. Data sources include both primary and secondary literature comprising books, …

This study analyzes how the news about the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is represented on the Al Jazeera news channel, focusing on the construction of ideology and the representation of actors in the discourse. Khamenei was killed on 28 February 2026 in a US-Israeli airstrike, an event that triggered military escalation and a contest of narratives in the Middle East. This study fills a research gap, as no previous work has critically analyzed how the killing of an Iranian leader is represented in transnational Arab media. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with Norman Fairclough’s …

Penggunaan Idiom Mandarin Dalam Kritik Tidak Langsung Di Media Sosial Weibo: Analisis Bentuk, Makna, Dan Fungsi Pragmatik, Vivianne Zara Kwang, Uti Aryanti
Multikultura
Weibo, a social media platform, has become a digital public sphere that facilitates discussions and the expression of criticism regarding various social issues in China. One linguistic strategy employed by users to convey criticism indirectly is the use of Mandarin idioms (chéngyǔ), fixed four-character expressions whose figurative meanings cannot be interpreted literally. The use of idioms allows speakers to express criticism implicitly, thereby reducing potential threats to the hearer's face. This study aims to identify the forms and meanings of Mandarin idioms used in indirect criticism on Weibo and to explain their pragmatic functions as off-record strategies within Brown and …

Bansa At Kapuluan: Notes On The Archipelagic Nuance Of Bienvenido Lumbera’S Discourse Of The Region And Nationhood, Adhoniz B. Rebong
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This paper explores a re-reading of the ‘region’ that appears in National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera’s advocacy for valuing regional literature as a foundation of a strong national literature. His discourse against the othering of the regional literature as ‘vernacular’ is encapsuled in the philosophy of his works: that the region represents a precise, immediate worldview, while the national offers a wider, encompassing perspective of the Filipinos (Lumbera 156). Lumbera’s discourse of the nation and the region is revisited by this paper in the lens of Archipelagic studies, specifically using the kapuluan as a Philippine conceptual iteration. In essence this paper …

Organizational Health Inventory: A Comprehensive Exam For Assessing Extension's Organizational Health, Tearney R Woodruff, Meggan Franks, Hannah G. Edwards, Lauren D. Hargrave, Brandi Berven, Cynthia Canfield
Journal of Extension
As Extension faces a retention crisis, it is crucial to focus on the health of our organizations. A collaborative working group, comprised of evaluation and staff development specialists across multiple states, identified the need for a free, accessible organizational health evaluation tool for Extension. Many higher education institutions cannot afford consultants to assess organizational well-being and effectiveness yet need the data the evaluation would provide. This article highlights a validated survey instrument, the Organizational Health Inventory–Extension (OHI-EXT), designed to help Extension organizations identify issues and implement targeted interventions that foster a stable and engaged workforce.

Designing With, Not For Youth: Reframing Participatory Techniques As Civic Learning Tools For Urban Greening And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I Rodriguez Gonzalez, Dorelys Oyola Remigio, Kevin G Torres Garrido
Journal of Extension
Here, we present four participatory techniques—visioning, mapping, photovoice, and codesign—with practical recommendations for their effective implementation in fostering civic learning and engagement in urban greening among BIPOC and Hispanic youth. With examples of culturally responsive, hands-on activities and an AI-assisted synthesis of youth ideas, drawn from application with over 100 youth in Connecticut, we illustrate their use in informing local urban planning processes. We highlight the role of these techniques in positioning youth as active civic agents and collaborative designers in the creation of urban green spaces, with application for Extension professionals, educators, and planning officials.

Cross-Cultural Considerations In Psychological Assessment And Resilience: Advancing Equity In Global Mental Health, Shivani Mathur, Victoria Evans-Fulton
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Widely used psychological assessment instruments, including the Patient Health Questionnaire–9, Beck Depression Inventory, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder–7, were developed primarily within Euro-North American contexts. Although frequently used for their efficiency and psychometric strengths, their application across culturally diverse populations raises concerns regarding cross-cultural validity, fairness, clinical interpretation, and ethical use. Expressions of psychological distress, resilience, and adaptive functioning vary across cultural contexts and may involve somatic complaints, relational meanings, spiritual frameworks, culturally specific idioms of distress, and community-oriented coping that standardized measures may inadequately capture. Without sufficient cultural and contextual inquiry, clinicians risk misdiagnosis, failure to recognize distress, and deficit-oriented …

In this inaugural Editor’s Note, we introduce the Journal of Institutional Ethnography (JIE), share how the journal was developed, and explain its mission and goals. We provide an overview of the articles in our first issue and highlight how they use institutional ethnography to explore people’s everyday experiences and the institutional processes that shape them. We conclude by inviting scholars to submit their work, join our editorial boards, and help us grow the JIE community.
Beyond Abstracts: Reflections On Locating Institutional Ethnography Studies In Bibliographic Databases And Navigating The Social Organization Of Knowledge, Sonya Hill
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This article draws on the challenges encountered, discoveries made, and search strategies employed during a scoping review of Institutional Ethnography (IE). While informed by that review process, the article is not a scoping review and does not present review findings. Rather, it reflects on the practical difficulties of locating IE studies in bibliographic databases and offers guidance for researchers seeking to identify, retrieve, and enhance the visibility of IE scholarship. Grounded in my efforts to locate IE studies, the article uses those experiences as an entry point for reflecting on the social organization of knowledge and how database indexing, metadata, …
Interpretative Power And The Social Ontology Of Institutional Ethnography: A Review Of Órla Meadhbh Murray’S University Audit Cultures And Feminist Praxis: An Institutional Ethnography (2025), Breanna Kubat
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This review critically assesses Órla Meadhbh Murray’s institutional ethnography (IE) of audit culture at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I center my review on Murray’s argument that interpretive power exists at the local level, and with this, opportunities, although limited, to influence how audit processes are performed at the institutional and departmental levels exist. I propose that Murray’s work provides a practical guide and example of what it means to conduct an IE that is grounded in IE’s social ontology.

Examining The Organization Of Student Work And Wellbeing In Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz, Liliana Araújo, Christine Guptill
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This article investigates how music students’ work is institutionally coordinated within a higher school of music in Canada and how this shapes student health and wellbeing. This study reveals a problematic in students’ everyday experiences as the work required to succeed extends beyond what is formally recognized and made visible through institutional structures. Using Institutional Ethnography as the method of inquiry, we begin from the standpoint of music students, exploring the local and extra-local relations that coordinate what and how they do their work. Through interviews with students, faculty, and administrators, we trace students’ negotiation of contradictory discourses of ‘care’ …

Student (Mis)Placement In Swedish Special Education Provision Through Intellectual Disability Labeling: The Educator Standpoint, Liz Adams Lyngback, Enni Paul, Christina Headman
Journal of Institutional Ethnography
This institutional ethnography exploration begins with the standpoint of educators and focuses on the work related to ways students in Sweden exit the separate compulsory school for students with intellectual disability (CSID) and re-enter the regular compulsory school form through a student referral unit (SRU). By exploring what appears to puzzle the education system at the local level, this study contributes to a growing body of research on addressing multilingualism as a disability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic data, the study moves beyond educators’ experience to a broader inquiry into the ruling relations that coordinate the creation of misplaced students. The …

Pics 101: Understanding Post-Incarceration Syndrome, Nicole L. Wiesen
Forensic Scholars Today
The psychological consequences of incarceration have been documented for decades, yet there remains no widely accepted trauma-informed framework specifically designed to conceptualize the cumulative effects of incarceration on individuals returning to their communities. Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) is an emerging conceptual framework that seeks to integrate biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors associated with incarceration-related trauma and community reintegration. Building upon foundational research in prisonization, institutionalization, trauma, and correctional psychology—particularly the work of Craig Haney and other scholars examining the lasting effects of incarceration—the PICS framework provides clinicians, researchers, educators, and correctional professionals with a biopsychosocial lens through which to understand …

Towards Equitable Protection: The Legal And Societal Invisibility Of Unmarried Relationships And Dating Violence In India, Annet Shaju, Aditi Padiyar
Journal of International Women's Studies
In India, unmarried romantic relationships, and especially cohabitation, are cultural taboos for which women unequivocally bear the brunt of societal stigma and moral scrutiny. Although India’s Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDV) explicitly includes women in unmarried relationships, deeply entrenched socio-cultural bias permeates institutional mechanisms, impeding support, legal assistance, and protection for unmarried women. The 2025 state mandate to register unmarried relationships involving cohabitation signals a shift towards increased moral policing and infringement of privacy and autonomy. Such repressive rules risk being counterproductive; there is a need for regulations that prioritize women’s empowerment and broader societal changes …

Women’S Employment And Intrahousehold Bargaining Power: Evidence From Nigeria, Temitope O. Olalude, Olanrewaju A. Olaniyan
Journal of International Women's Studies
Although women’s participation in paid employment has increased in recent years, the extent to which this improvement correlates with increased intrahousehold bargaining power (IHBP) remains understudied. Women’s intrahousehold bargaining power plays a critical role in achieving a more inclusive and sustainable economy. This study therefore investigates the relationship between women’s employment status and IHBP in Nigeria using data from the 2013 and 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) to evaluate progress over time. We measured women’s employment status and assessed women’s intrahousehold bargaining power using two indices: the direct bargaining power index (DBPI) and the indirect bargaining power index …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Using the KORTARA Korpus Nusantara application, this study employed a quantitative corpus linguistics approach to examine the lexical density and average sentence length in nine novels by Indonesian women authors. The results indicated that each work differed greatly with respect to average sentence length and lexical density. When lexical density was analyzed through TTR, the results displayed a sufficiently wide range, suggesting the absence of a uniform women’s writing style in terms of vocabulary. For example, Dee Lestari’s Supernova: Roots (2002) achieved the highest TTR of 23.59%, which indicates an extensive and diverse vocabulary. Alaska Bay (2019) by Eka Aryani, …
