Mitigating Mental Health Disparities: Ethnic Matching As A Moderating Variable On Help Seeking Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Max Oishi Oct 2026

Mitigating Mental Health Disparities: Ethnic Matching As A Moderating Variable On Help Seeking Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Max Oishi

The Bear Counseling Collective

There are significant mental health treatment disparities for racially and ethnically minoritized (REM) populations (Lin et al., 2023; McGuire & Miranda, 2008; Thomeer et al., 2023). These disparities include REM populations seeking help for mental health treatment at differing rates compared to European Americans along with significant treatment underutilization for REM populations along with intergroup differences (Choi et al., 2019; Hosseini & Kubavat, 2022; Kim & Lee, 2022; Kwong et al., 2025; Schraufnagel et al., 2006; Sheehan et al., 2018 & 2024). Due to underutilization, research suggests ethnic matching and/or racial matching could mediate mental health disparities for REM populations …

Journal of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies

Robert Muharremi and Alisa Ramadani’s Transforming a Guerrilla into a Regular Army: From the Kosovo Liberation Army to the Army of the Republic of Kosovo seeks to provide an accessible, academic narrative of Kosovo’s security transformation. It traces the evolution from the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), through the Kosovo Protection Corps (KPC), to the current Kosovo Security Force (KSF). The result of this evolution is a military force which today holds a full-fledged defense mission.

Visoka, Gëzim. The Derecognition Of States. Ann Arbor: University Of Michigan Press, 2024., Aidan Hehir

Journal of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies

Gëzim Visoka describes the derecognition of states as “a puzzling feature in world politics” (p. 114). This is certainly true. For many decades derecognition was a peripheral concern given it was rarely practiced after the UN was established in 1945; one notable exception being the derecognition of Taiwan, which has been ongoing since the 1950s. In recent years, however, it has become of significantly greater interest as it has become more common; of the five cases Visoka examines – Taiwan, Western Sahara, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Kosovo – four are very definitely products of the post-Cold War era. Despite this, …

Hehir, Aidan. Kosovo And The “Internationals”: Hope, Hubris, And The End Of History. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2024, Sead Zimeri

Journal of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies

Hope is enjoying a scholarly renaissance. Building on the “standard account” of hope as a desire for an outcome believed to be possible, recent work by Luc Bovens, Victoria McGeer, Adrienne Martin, Darrel Moellendorf, Michael Milona, and Katie Stockdale has refined the concept, distinguishing it from optimism and expectation, and asking when hoping is rational and what it requires. Yet this literature has remained largely within moral psychology; sustained tests against concrete political history are rare. Conversely, the enormous literature on humanitarian intervention and state-building has had much to say about power, legitimacy, and paternalism, and almost nothing about hope. …

Moral Language Analysis And The Archives Of Sexuality, Phoenix R. Crane, Calvin Mensel '27, Claire Collins '28 Oct 2026

Moral Language Analysis And The Archives Of Sexuality, Phoenix R. Crane, Calvin Mensel '27, Claire Collins '28

Annual Student Research Poster Session

This project was based primarily in Greencastle, IN, with regular research trips to Indiana University in Bloomington to conduct in-person, archival research at the Kinsey Institute. During these visits, the team explored the Institute’s scholarly collections on sexuality, particularly on subjects related to queer women’s sexuality, criminal trials, and the occult. Extensive notes were taken – recording gender issues and language patterns, specifically. Three promising collections were identified to compare – abortion trials, obscenity trials, and murder trials. Guided by Moral Foundations Theory, differences were hypothesized in how journalists’ language emphasizes the five facets of morality across the three contentious …

Unlocking The Performance Of Racial Dissimilarity In Subordinate-Supervisor Dyads: Collectivism And Communication Media Are Key, Orlando Richard, Rawia Ahmed, María Del Carmen Triana, M. Fernanda Garcia Oct 2026

Unlocking The Performance Of Racial Dissimilarity In Subordinate-Supervisor Dyads: Collectivism And Communication Media Are Key, Orlando Richard, Rawia Ahmed, María Del Carmen Triana, M. Fernanda Garcia

All Works

As opposed to past literature in which racial dissimilarity has been largely examined through a negative lens, this study fills an important gap by revealing that racial dissimilarity between supervisor and subordinate can lead to a knowledge advantage. Based on the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) framework, we conducted a field study of 151 subordinate-supervisor dyads to examine how dyadic racial dissimilarity impacts Elaboration of Task-Relevant Information (ETRI) and subordinate job performance when jointly moderated by subordinate cultural values and communication media. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression and mediation analysis. We found that ETRI was higher under conditions of dyad racial dissimilarity …

Where Do I Live, Again?: Finding Kentucky Geographic Information, Kurt X. Metzmeier Oct 2026

Where Do I Live, Again?: Finding Kentucky Geographic Information, Kurt X. Metzmeier

Brandeis School of Law Faculty Scholarship

Since the foundation of the United States, Americans have surveyed and recorded deeds to their properties in the county where they resided. However, until recently, those property surveys, as well as county maps, were the product of human surveyors drawing lines on paper. Only in the late 20th century, when satellites began surveying the globe and the internet made information readily accessible, did human maps give way to geographic information systems (GIS). This article surveys the GIS systems available to Louisville lawyers.

Student Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Paige Horton, Amanda Isabel Osuna Oct 2026

Student Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Paige Horton, Amanda Isabel Osuna

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative AI and deepfake technology, has introduced new challenges in the production and dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While existing research has examined the technological and legal implications of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, less is known about how the public, especially young adults who are most likely to use AI technologies, perceive these developments. The present study addresses this gap by examining undergraduate student perceptions of AI-generated child sexual abuse material at a medium-sized private university in the Southeastern United States. Using data from a Qualtrics survey, this study …

Exploring Bias Filters As A Source Evaluation Tool, Mandi Goodsett, Ben Richards, David N. Rapp Oct 2026

Exploring Bias Filters As A Source Evaluation Tool, Mandi Goodsett, Ben Richards, David N. Rapp

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Today's complex, algorithmically-driven information landscape can be difficult to navigate. While media literacy skills are important for negotiating this complexity, a pedagogical focus on misinformation and fact-checking can have the unintended effect of increasing already widespread cynicism, including among young people. In this exploratory study, we introduced college students to a new pedagogical concept: bias filters. Bias filters are aspects of the information creation process that help to reduce bias in the final product. The findings suggest that bias filters have considerable promise as an instructional tool, encouraging students to approach information sources with a more nuanced, less cynical perspective. …

Monetary Policy Transmission And Real-Sector Growth In Nigeria: A Critical Review Of Channels, Constraints And Enterprise Implications, Olusegun Timothy Odesola Dr., Oluwatoyin A. Kayode‑Akeremale Oct 2026

Monetary Policy Transmission And Real-Sector Growth In Nigeria: A Critical Review Of Channels, Constraints And Enterprise Implications, Olusegun Timothy Odesola Dr., Oluwatoyin A. Kayode‑Akeremale

Bullion

This article critically reviews monetary policy transmission in Nigeria and its implications for real-sector growth and enterprise performance. It demonstrates that the credit channel dominates, while the interest rate channel remains weak due to structural rigidities, low pass-through, and supply-side constraints. The exchange rate and expectations channels play contingent roles but are undermined by heavy central bank intervention and fiscal dominance. Transmission effectiveness is constrained by shallow financial intermediation (private credit <20% of GDP), financial dualism (large informal finance sector), fiscal dominance (CBN financing of government deficits), underdeveloped capital markets, and institutional weaknesses (weak contract enforcement, information asymmetries). These constraints impose asymmetric burdens on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are disproportionately harmed by monetary tightening due to limited access to alternative finance and higher information opacity. The paper proposes a novel conceptual framework integrating transmission channels, structural constraints, and enterprise heterogeneity. It identifies critical research gaps firm-level micro-mechanisms, non-bank intermediaries, comparative African perspectives, targeted policy instruments, digital finance, nonlinearities, expectations, and spatial dimensions and outlines a forward-looking research agenda. Key recommendations include strengthening banking competition, addressing fiscal dominance via statutory limits on ways and means, scaling credit guarantee schemes for SMEs, deepening capital markets, enhancing monetary-fiscal coordination, and developing a coherent digital finance regulatory framework.

Effect Of Forensic Accounting Techniques On Financial Statement Fraud In Microfinance Banks In Nigeria, Ajewole Oluwasola Dada, Professor Adeoye A. Afolabi Oct 2026

Effect Of Forensic Accounting Techniques On Financial Statement Fraud In Microfinance Banks In Nigeria, Ajewole Oluwasola Dada, Professor Adeoye A. Afolabi

Bullion

Financial statement fraud threatens confidence in Nigeria's microfinance banking sector. Anchored on the fraud diamond theory, this study examined the effects of anonymous communication, ratio analysis, inspection and observation, and fraud risk assessment. A cross-sectional survey of 225 professionals across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones yielded 222 usable responses. Regression results showed a significant inverse relationship between the techniques and fraud (Ra = .583; adjusted = .575; p < .001). The study concludes that forensic accounting techniques materially constrain fraudulent reporting and recommends their formal integration into microfinance banks' enterprise-risk, audit, and supervisory frameworks.

Subjective Time Estimation In Rats: Seconds To Minutes, Alissa Christensen Oct 2026

Subjective Time Estimation In Rats: Seconds To Minutes, Alissa Christensen

Holster Scholar Projects

Time estimation is important for survival. Importantly, time estimation is subjective, influenced by a variety of factors.

We used a temporal bisection task (Church & Deluty, 1977) to determine the degree to which a rat “feels” a stimulus is long/short in reference to predetermined anchor durations.

Animals were first trained to respond differently to a short (3s) and long (6s) duration light-cue. This was followed by intermediate duration probes (averaging 4.5s). Most animals treated the intermediate intervals as long. The function varied, some showing a more linear response while others a step function.

The second phase examines longer time estimation, …

I, Too, Am America: Latino Men, American Identity, And Support For Conservative Immigration Policy, Nadia Ratib-Eixarch Oct 2026

I, Too, Am America: Latino Men, American Identity, And Support For Conservative Immigration Policy, Nadia Ratib-Eixarch

Holster Scholar Projects

In the 2024 Presidential election, Donald Trump won 43% of the Latino male vote and 32% of the Latina vote, despite his history of anti-immigration and anti-Latino rhetoric. This 11-point gender gap among Latino voters exceeded the seven-point gender gap among white voters. Although Trump ran on anti-immigration policy, Latino male voters recorded their main concerns as inflation and jobs, suggesting a divergence between Latino male voters’ perceptions of their interests and those of the larger Latino community. Schaffner and Soler (2025) argue that this divergence is because Latino men who support Trump no longer identify primarily as Latino.

Analysis Of The Deborah Sampson Act Of 2020: Improving Women Veterans’ Care, Jessica N. Shipp

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Women Veterans are one of the fastest-growing populations served by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), yet gaps persist in access to gender-responsive, trauma-informed care. Despite requirements established by the Deborah Sampson Act (DSA) of 2020, implementation remains inconsistent in Women's Health Primary Care Provider (WH-PCP) access, women's mental health (MH) services, military sexual trauma (MST) care, workforce capacity, care coordination, and accountability.

Aim of the Project: The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility, equity, and implementation fidelity of the DSA using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Policy Analytical Framework (POLARIS) and identify evidence-based recommendations to …

Time And Money: Patterns Of Nonstandard Work Across The First Year Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Whitehead, Alison Winiarski, Emily Wornell, Justin Schupp Oct 2026

Time And Money: Patterns Of Nonstandard Work Across The First Year Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Whitehead, Alison Winiarski, Emily Wornell, Justin Schupp

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

The COVID-19 pandemic had a well-documented impact on the formal economy, with the extent of these consequences varying across industries and sociodemographic groups. Less attention has been paid to whether the nonstandard economy, including informal and gig work, mirrored this broader economic fallout. We draw on 2019 and 2020 data from the Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking to assess participation in, time spent on, and money earned from nonstandard work across the first year of the pandemic. We find evidence of an overall decline in participation in nonstandard work during this time. However, our results indicate heterogeneous experiences across …

Lgbtq+ Identity Among Young Adults With Autism, Meg Hoffer-Collins, Mixalis Poulakis, Lauri Hyers

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

Our qualitative study examined the sexual orientation and gender identity experiences of LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority identities) identified young adults on the autism spectrum. In one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews with thirteen participants (ages 18-33), we explored three questions: (1) How do young adults with ASD characterize their LGBTQ+ identity; (2) How have they navigated the disclosure of their LGBTQ+ identity and coming out to others; and (3) How has their LGBTQ+ identity impacted their relationships. Qualitative coding of interviews revealed that most participants began considering their LGBTQ+ identity before adulthood and settled …

Promoting Member Participation And Dialogue Across Differences: A Mixed Methods Study Of One Diocese’S Implementation Of The Catholic Church’S Synodality Initiative, Robert Donmoyer, Fred J. Galloway Oct 2026

Promoting Member Participation And Dialogue Across Differences: A Mixed Methods Study Of One Diocese’S Implementation Of The Catholic Church’S Synodality Initiative, Robert Donmoyer, Fred J. Galloway

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

In recent years, leaders of the Catholic Church have attempted to promote more participatory ways of operating. A few years ago, for example, Church leaders initiated what they referred to as a synodality initiative worldwide. Catholics were asked to share publicly a time the Church brought them joy and a time it disappointed them, along with a hope they have for the Church's future.  One diocese organized the process around the sort of talking circles used by Indigenous groups to make decisions and connect members.  This diocese also enlisted researchers to lead a systematic study of the process; they employed …

Sacred Loss And Moral Authority: Religious Leadership And Identity Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Societies, Kimberly C. Kennedy Oct 2026

Sacred Loss And Moral Authority: Religious Leadership And Identity Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Societies, Kimberly C. Kennedy

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

This paper examines how religious leaders shape narratives of identity formation and reconciliation in post-civil conflict societies where violence, defeat, or political transition produces moral injury and crises of meaning. By drawing on themes of justice, forgiveness, and accountability, religious leadership can wield moral authority to influence public perception, guide healing processes, and support transitions from active conflict to more stable forms of peace. The paper explores how religious leaders reframe narratives of defeat, particularly in cases where a community’s cause was endowed with sacred meaning, creating a crisis of faith. It argues that this work is best understood as …
