The question that I am left with from the extraordinary presentations over the conference's two days borrows from Rabbi Steve Greenberg's and Ludger Viefhues's discussion of the multiple images of the biblical "Sodom". Conventionally Sodom has signified a place of sexual deviance or, conversely, sexual censorship. But as Greenberg pointed out, in many traditional commentaries on the story of the condemnation of Sodom, the issue was not that the townspeople were engaged in forbidden sexual practices, but that they were violent and hostile to those in need of shelter and food.

Malacca was indeed a unique Islamic civilization in the Malay Archipelago that dominated the region from 1400 to 1511. Malay, Portuguese, and British historiography records the greatness of this civilization, its civilizational impact in the region, and its fame that spread well beyond its frontiers. Nonetheless this civilization fell in the year 15 l I at the hands of the Portuguese imperialists. This study attempts to contextualize the fall of Malacca and the rise of the Portuguese power within lbn Khaldun's unique cyclical theory of the rise and fall of world civilizations. This dissertation is a research about ihya Ramadan (revival of the spirit of Ramadan) especially through solat terawih (The Ramadan prayer) hold around Kota Bharu districts, Kelantan. It focuses on the government role specifically the Kelantan state government concerning the implementation and practices of Ibadah during Ramadan and also the issues surrounding rites and rituals of solat terawih among Kelantanese society.

Government and general conception on the zakat management in Malaysia has been that unsatisfactory. Many factors can be pointed as the cause of the present state of affairs. Based on the past research, most of the problems were qualitatively analysed from empirical data. This research uses quantitative data in analysing the problems arising from the management of zakat through case study on the payment of zakat paddy in District of Pendang, Kedah. The data shows that the total amount of zakat paddy collected by the administrators is much lower than the amount collected from total crop collection from farmers. This …

One definition of civil society dominated all theoretical and historical perspectives when it comes to the special case of civil society in Palestine. "Civil society is concerned with a society's total self re-producing ability through its inner strength in a manner that is distinct from the state" (Bishara 1995, 143). The hypothesis of this work is that civil society in Palestine existed and flourished in spite the absence of a national state and had played a fundamental role in the social and economic development of Palestinian society throughout its history.
