Preliminary Cultural Resources Investigations For The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, Hidalgo County, Texas, Karl W. Kibler, Martha Doty Freeman, Amy C. Earls

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archeological, archival, and geomorphologic investigations were conducted for the proposed Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge Project in Hidalgo County, Texas, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. from October 12-27, 1992. The purposes of these investigations were to locate and record any cultural resources within the project area, determine their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and designation as State Archeological Landmarks, and to provide an overview of the Holocene geomorphic history of the project area.

The geomorphic history of the project area suggests that the Rio Grande has experienced continuous channel aggradation from the end of the Pleistocene to …

The Impact Of Third Party Reimbursement On Occupational Therapy And Vision Rehabilitation Services: A Comparative Case Study, Tiehan Liu

Dissertations

This is a comparative case study of occupational therapy and vision rehabilitation services. The purpose of this study is to describe how environmental forces, especially third party reimbursement, shape occupational therapy in terms of organizational form, setting, procedure of services and documentation process. The study will further examine the current external and internal conditions under which vision rehabilitation professionals may develop third party payment, especially Medicare and Medicaid. Based on environment theories and the experience of occupational therapy, the potential impact of such reimbursement on vision rehabilitation services is discussed.

Three forms of data were used in this study: (1) …

Patronage Bibliography (1993), Roger A. Lohmann May 1993

Patronage Bibliography (1993), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Patronage is one of the basic concepts in the commons theory of voluntary action; it refers to the giving or donating of resources – money, objects for collection, or repertories of knowledge, skills or ‘know-how’. Patrons – those who give – are one of the three fundamental roles in philanthropods, along with intermediaries or agents, and beneficiaries. Patronage is also a heavily studied subject, extensively written about in the humanities as the items in this bibliography attest.

The Role Of Gender Differences In The Relationship Between Guilt- And Shame-Proneness And Depressive Symptomatology, Julie Bingham Shiffler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the role played by gender in the relationship between the degree of depressive symptomatology and levels of adaptive guilt-, maladaptive guilt-, and shame-proneness in a college population. A measure of depressive symptomatology (the Beck Depression Inventory) and a measure of guilt- and shame-proneness (the Self-Conscious Affect and Attribution Inventory - Revised) were administered to 299 college students (113 males and 186 females). Females reported higher total levels of depressive symptomatology than males. Statistically significant gender differences were found for nine BDI items. Females also had higher levels of adaptive guilt-, maladaptive guilt-, …

Ricardo's Theory Of Profit And The Third Edition Of The Principles, John B. Davis Apr 1993

Ricardo's Theory Of Profit And The Third Edition Of The Principles, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

David Ricardo's “On Machinery” chapter continues to interest theorists and historians of economic thought (Blaug 1958, Hollander 1979, Kurz 1984, Samuelson, 1988, 1989, Morishima 1989, Negishi 1990). Yet the addition of the chapter to the third edition of Ricardo's Principles of Political Economy and Taxation arguably overturns much of the view for which Ricardo is so well known (Davis 1989). In the added chapter Ricardo allows, contrary to his original view in the first two editions, that the introduction of machinery is indeed injurious to the class of laborers. More interestingly, because machinery substitutes for labor, wages cannot rise and …

Review Of Agrarian Women: Wives And Mothers In Rural Nebraska, 1880-1940 By Deborah Fink, Betsy Downey Feb 1993

Review Of Agrarian Women: Wives And Mothers In Rural Nebraska, 1880-1940 By Deborah Fink, Betsy Downey

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Agrarian Women begins with a paradox. "Agrarian ideology-the celebration of farming and farmers as the heart of American society"-pervaded the rural households where the author grew up. "Yet it meshed poorly with the lives of many rural women we knew" (p. xv). Using published and unpublished letters, diaries, fiction, public records, historical studies, and interviews, anthropologist Deborah Fink explores the ways in which the agrarian ideal failed the women of Boone County, Nebraska.

Review Of Aboriginal Resource Use In Canada: Historical And Legal Aspects By Kerry Abel And Jean Friesen, Ken Leyton-Brown Feb 1993

Review Of Aboriginal Resource Use In Canada: Historical And Legal Aspects By Kerry Abel And Jean Friesen, Ken Leyton-Brown

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book, the sixth volume in the series Manitoba Studies in Native History, is a collection of eighteen papers presented at a conference held in 1988 at St. John's College, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. That conference grew out of a recognition of the importance of historical work in some aspects of the broader question of Aboriginal rights, especially as Aboriginals and others have increasingly attempted, in recent years, to settle disputes through recourse to Canadian courts-concerns reflected in the book's structure and contents.

Review Of A Social Geography Of Canada: Essays In Honour Of J. Wreford Watson By Guy M. Robinson, Randy Widdis Feb 1993

Review Of A Social Geography Of Canada: Essays In Honour Of J. Wreford Watson By Guy M. Robinson, Randy Widdis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

As a graduate student at McMaster and Queen's, I was made very aware of the contribution of J. Wreford Watson to Canadian geography. This is understandable since he was largely responsible for the establishment of geography departments at both these institutions as well as at Carleton. This collection of essays by former graduate students, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic cover many of the themes of inquiry that interested Watson. The contents focus upon the changing character of Canadian landscapes and society, including dimensions of its historical development, its present spatial forms and current social issues. The …

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink Jan 1993

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink

Graduate Research Papers

High school speech instructors frequently use picture storybooks in their curriculum. Picture storybooks differ from illustrated storybooks and picture books because they are the only type of the three that includes a balanced union between text and illustrations. An observation made at a high school speech contest in Iowa was the impetus for the formation of a bibliography of picture storybooks suitable for speech contest work. The researcher located, read, annotated, and categorized books reviewed in The Horn Book Magazine between 1989 and 1992. Of the 497 books read, 363 formed a bibliography of picture storybooks divided among these categories: …

Convergence And Divergence – A Preliminary Comparative Analysis Of The Singapore And Hong Kong Legal Systems, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Both Singapore and Hong Kong are similar in very many respects: both are city states, although the former is now independent; both have legal systems that derive from English law; and both are devoid of natural resources, dependent upon the industry of their people for economic survival.

A. Philip Randolph And Boston's African-American Railroad Worker, James R. Green, Robert C. Hayden Sep 1992

A. Philip Randolph And Boston's African-American Railroad Worker, James R. Green, Robert C. Hayden

Trotter Review

On October 8, 1988, a group of retired Pullman car porters and dining car waiters gathered in Boston's Back Bay Station for the unveiling of a larger-than-life statue of A. Philip Randolph. During the 1920s and 1930s, Randolph was a pioneering black labor leader who led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He came to be considered the "father of the modern civil rights movement" as a result of his efforts to desegregate World War II defense jobs and the military services. Randolph's importance as a militant leader is highlighted by a quote inscribed on the base of the statue …

Most Americans possess an image of the Great Plains derived, I suspect, from a high-speed window. The interstate highways, those great passing through routes, provide constricted views; I-80, for example, trapped in the Platte River Valley across much of Nebraska, leads one to think of the Plains as flat. The image from 30,000-plus feet is no less informative, to the untrained observer, of the web of life below; even the giant circles of the center pivots bespeak large empty spaces. Neither viewing platform is sufficient to reveal the intricacies of the Plains, let alone the concerns of those who live …

Regional City And Network City: Portland And Seattle In The Twentieth Century, Carl Abbott Aug 1992

Regional City And Network City: Portland And Seattle In The Twentieth Century, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, have comparable early histories, similar economic bases, and parallel demographic profiles, their responses to the rise of a global economy in the 20th century differ. Both were regional capitals in the first half of the century. Since then, however, Portland has kept its traditional role and has gained ground as a regional capital, while Seattle has become a network city transferring goods, services, and ideas reaching beyond the Pacific Northwest. From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt Apr 1992

From Welfare To Liberation: A Socio-Historical Analysis Of The Animal Rights Movement, Linda J. Rynbrandt

Masters Theses

This thesis is a socio-historical analysis of the animal rights social movement in the United States of America at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. The theoretical model is resource mobilization theory, especially McCarthy and Zald's (1973) entrepreneurial model. The method, which contrasts this social movement at two points in time, is informed by Skocpol's (1984) interpretative historical sociology. In particular, leadership, ideology, organizational structure, and strategy tactics in both eras are examined. Comparing the two manifestations of animal rights protest, the data show that: (a) Leadership and organizational structure, though similar in many respects, are more professionalized …

Hugh Macdiarmid: The Thorn On Scotland's Rose, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

The items listed in this catalogue were almost all taken from the G. Ross Roy Collection of the University of South Carolina's Special Libraries Division. As the reader may be aware, collecting the works of MacDiarmid is made particularly difficult because there is no bibliography, or even checklist, of his complete works. Dr. W. R. Aitken has produced a useful list of books by or edited by MacDiarmid, but much of his work is to be found only in the periodicals and books to which he contributed. While particular attention was paid to works entirely by MacDiarmid in the selection …

Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1992

Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Husband and wife, parent and child, priest and penitent, supervisor and employee, the 'happy hour' regulars at the corner pub - almost all of us communicate interpersonally every day. Important decisions can depend on success or failure in carrying out this process. Ultimately, it probably is of far more practical importance than mass media communication. But what do we really know about it?

As the author of this issue points out, only three of the last forty issues of Trends have focussed on topics which can be labelled 'interpersonal communication'. Most of the other's have been devoted to various aspects …

Saskatchewan Bound: Migration To A New Canadian Frontier, Randy William Widds Jan 1992

Saskatchewan Bound: Migration To A New Canadian Frontier, Randy William Widds

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Almost forty years ago, Roland Berthoff used the published census to construct a map of English Canadian settlement in the United States for the year 1900 (Map 1).1 Migration among this group was generally short distance in nature, yet a closer examination of Berthoff's map reveals that considerable numbers of migrants gravitated toward more distant agricultural and urban frontiers and a reading of the historical literature on internal migration within North America emphasizes the fact that a significant number of Canadians living in the United States returned home to Canada during the period 1896-1914.2

When East Meets West: The Passions Of Landscape And Culture In Gretel Ehrlich's Heart Mountain, Gregory L. Morris Jan 1992

When East Meets West: The Passions Of Landscape And Culture In Gretel Ehrlich's Heart Mountain, Gregory L. Morris

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Gretel Ehrlich is a writer who has taken for the subject of her art-and who has taken for her home-the Big Hom Basin of northern Wyoming. That particular extension of plains landscape, stretched between the Big Horn Mountains to the east (a sort of geological intrusion upon an otherwise Great Plains terrain) and the Absarokas to the west, has provided both an intensely personal and a brilliantly imaginative source of inspiration for Ehrlich's fiction and non-fiction. What on one hand has been a distinctly restorative (and even erotic) landscape for Ehrlich also has proven to be a potently politicized landscape.

Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1992

Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the desires of the majority of archaeologists is to obtain from their analyses an objective knowledge of the societies they study. However, the mere desire to obtain objectivity does not ensure its attainment especially where biases cannot be controlled. Added to this difficulty of obtaining objectivity is that not only is the subject matter of archaeology vast and varied, but also archaeologists disagree on directions of study and interpretations, and in many cases very few scholars attempt to put themselves at a standpoint from which to measure the inadequacies and unevenness of their interpretations. Fundamental to interpretations in …

[Review Of] Toni Morrison. Jazz, Cortland P. Auser Jan 1992

[Review Of] Toni Morrison. Jazz, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Francis Davis, writing about jazz in the Atlantic Monthly (August 1988, p.71), defined it as "a protean music with a sense of manifest destiny." I personally feel this definition may be well used to accurately describe Morrison's latest fiction. Stylistically and structurally it is a masterpiece, for mood and mode match. The stories about its main characters are told in the book's sections, and yet the sections are interwoven because of the interrelationships of these characters. In each such section time past and present are also interwoven in a "seamless" way. The lyricism of many of the passages spoken by …

[Review Of] Patricia Morton. Disfigured Images: The Historical Assault On Afro-American Women, Torrance Stephens Jan 1992

[Review Of] Patricia Morton. Disfigured Images: The Historical Assault On Afro-American Women, Torrance Stephens

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Historical studies with regard to the history of African descendents have recently evinced new efforts to dig deeper into the understanding of African peoples. These concerns are focused generally toward presenting an ethnographic interpretation of the African American community from the viewpoint of men. However, few have been produced that have advanced similar ethnographic perspectives regarding African American women from a female perspective.

Levels Of Differentiation Of Self In Married Couples, Margaret Galantowicz Jan 1992

Levels Of Differentiation Of Self In Married Couples, Margaret Galantowicz

Theses

The construct of differentiation of self, a key concept in the family theory of Murray Bowen, is examined with the purpose of testing Bowen's hypothesis that married couples are differentiated to the same degree. The Differentiation of Self Scale was used with 45 recently married couples from St. Louis County ranging in age from 20 to 71. Results of this study demonstrate that there is no significant correlation between the wives' and husbands' scores.
