Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen
Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.
During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. Coinciding with the collapse of the southern Levant, Tell el Hesi was abandoned throughout the Middle Bronze …

Many Versions of Masculine: An Exploration of Boys’ Identity Formation through Digital Storytelling in an Afterschool Program
By Glynda A. Hull, Nora L. Kenney, Stacy Marple, & Ali Forsman-Schneider
Both scholarly literature and popular media often depict predominantly negative and one-dimensional images of boys, especially African-American boys. Predictions of these boys’ anticipated difficulties in school and adulthood are equally prevalent. This paper reports qualitative research that features case studies of nine urban boys of color, aged nine to eleven, who participated in an afterschool program where they learned to create digital multimedia texts. Drawing on an analysis of the children’s …
True Sons Of Erin: Catholic/Nationalist Ideology And The Politics Of Adventure In Our Boys 1914-32, Michael Flanagan
True Sons Of Erin: Catholic/Nationalist Ideology And The Politics Of Adventure In Our Boys 1914-32, Michael Flanagan
Doctoral
Conservative Irish society perceived itself to be under threat from a variety of “foreign“ cultural expressions in the decades around the turn of the twentieth century. The “sensational” nature of newspapers and periodicals produced for the broader metropolitan market and espousing the values of a more urban and less controlled society were particular sources of concern for Irish Catholics, as was the musical hall and the newly available cinema publications. The Christian Brothers entered the leisure reading market in September 1914 with their own magazine, Our Boys. The primary focus of this publication was to compete with the imperial and …
On Chris Lehmann's Revolt Of The Masscult, George Ciccariello Maher
On Chris Lehmann's Revolt Of The Masscult, George Ciccariello Maher
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The good folks at Prickly Paradigm are certainly doing their job. Their stated objective is “publishing challenging and sometimes outrageous pamphlets,” and Lehmann's short piece fulfills this claim brilliantly, evoking intellectual mood swings that span from shouting for joy at a particularly lucid formulation to shouting angrily at the deftness with which Lehmann transforms his lucidity into suspiciously wrongheaded and reactionary assessments. The clinical bipolarity of this work, as we will see, is no coincidence: it is precisely the political entanglement of the subject of mass culture (“masscult”) that leads to both respect for one's opponents and suspicion …

Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller
Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Leaders and historians see prestige as important, but international relations theorists have neglected the concept, in part for lack of a clear definition. It is proposed that a party “holds prestige” when group members generally believe that the party has a certain desirable quality, and this situation gives the party perceived power in the group. The definition gains support from a survey of international affairs writings on the sources of prestige. Prestige is strategically important when a party wants support from others who would rather join the side that more of the others are joining. Some general ways of acquiring …

Servant-Leadership And Unconditional Forgiveness: The Lives Of Six South African Perpetrators, Marleen Ramsey
Servant-Leadership And Unconditional Forgiveness: The Lives Of Six South African Perpetrators, Marleen Ramsey
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Servant-leadership practices are becoming increasingly more important as modern humanity makes desperate attempts to heal from the atrocities of war, interpersonal violence, and injustices that destroy the human spirit. Laub (1999) conceptualizes servant leadership in the following way: Servant-leadership is an understanding and practice of leadership that places the good of those led over the self-interest of the leader. Servantleadership promotes the valuing and development of people, the building of community, the practice of authenticity, the providing of leadership for the good of those led and the sharing of power and status for the common good of each individual. Media Use, Linguistic Preference And Social Capital In The Hispanic Community, Misti Mcdaniel
LSU Master's Theses
While considerable research had been devoted to the study of social capital, limited information is available assessing the connection between linguistic preference and social capital among ethnic groups. Research indicated the American Latino community exhibits levels of social capital similar to the greater United States populous. Latinos who preferred English-language media, however, exhibited higher levels of social capital than those who used Spanish-language media. Finally, Latinos who held a linguistic preference for English held higher levels of social capital than individuals who preferred Spanish.
Socrates As Citizen?: The Implications Of Socratic Eros For Contemporary Models Of Citizenship, Jeremy John Mhire
Socrates As Citizen?: The Implications Of Socratic Eros For Contemporary Models Of Citizenship, Jeremy John Mhire
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates the appropriateness of using Socrates as a model for contemporary citizenship. I examine the question of Socrates' civic character by inquiring about the relation of the philosopher (or political scientist) to the city (that is, to political life) without taking for granted that they share a common aim or purpose. Instead, I prepare the discussion with an examination of the treatment of Socrates by the comic poet Aristophanes in the Clouds. I suggest that Socrates' famed eros, his unwavering love of wisdom, was a problem, one that threatened the very foundations of political society. By conceiving of …

The Impact Of No Child Left Behind On Charter School Legislation And Practices - Policy Implications, Joice Eaddy Conyers
Theses and Dissertations
The charter school movement is considered one of the fastest growing education reform efforts in the United States today, serving over 1 million children nationwide. The demand to improve the quality of education in the United States has been paramount over the last twenty years. In December 2001, Congress approved a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and renamed it the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), P.L. 107-ll0, H.R. 1. Although ESEA was enacted in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson to supplement state and local efforts to provide all children with high-quality education, NCLB has …

The Banneker History Project (BHP) reconstructed the history of a local, segregated school. The Benjamin Banneker School served African American youth from 1913 to 1951. Oral histories from surviving alumni as well as primary documents from the times were sought. This article focuses on ways that one group of participants, 24 preservice teachers of color. experienced and interpreted the BHP. Data are reported in response to three questions: (a) Whose community does service learning serve? (b) What meanings do preservice teachers make of culturally responsive teaching? and (c) Does a community orientation count in teacher education? The author reflects on …
A Sociological History Of Prison Privatization In The Contemporary United States, Donna Selman-Killingbeck
A Sociological History Of Prison Privatization In The Contemporary United States, Donna Selman-Killingbeck
Dissertations
This dissertation is framed by the radical criminological-theoretical perspective and utilizes the social constructionist method of analysis to examine the development of prison privatization in the United States. Central to this analysis is the question: How is it that, given the disastrous history of blatant attempts to blend capitalism and punishment, contemporary privatization of prisons not only emerged but continues to expand becoming a multinational incarceration industry? Three phases of privatization: emergence, maintenance and perpetuation, are illuminated in their political, economic and cultural contexts. Thestrategies and techniques, access to power, claims-making and managing counterclaims for example, of various stakeholders in …

Historical Land Cover Impacts On Water Quality In The Provo River Watershed, 1975 - 2002, Fredric James Donaldson
Theses and Dissertations
The Provo River watershed has experienced land cover change over the past several decades. Land cover influences water quality inasmuch as land cover determines the type and quantity of non-point source (NPS) pollutants that may enter the water. This study examines the historical impacts of land cover changes on water quality in the Provo River using remote sensing and statistical analysis. Statistical correlations and linear regressions were used to study the relationship between various land cover types and water quality variables for six years between 1975 and 2002. This thesis supports research finding myriad impacts of urban land cover on …

On Brian Attebery’S Decoding Gender In Science Fiction, C. Jason Smith
On Brian Attebery’S Decoding Gender In Science Fiction, C. Jason Smith
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The premise of Decoding Gender in Science Fiction is, as Brian Attebery states in the first chapter, that “Science fiction is a useful tool for investigating habits of thought, including conceptions of gender. Gender, in turn, offers an interesting glimpse into some of the unacknowledged messages that permeate science fiction” (1). What we have in Decoding Gender in Science Fiction is the most comprehensive analysis of gender tropes in Science Fiction from its origins in Gothic literature to today. Attebery states in his introduction that he was surprised to find there was no historical study of the development …
A Politics Of Place: Reading The Signs At Walden Pond, Joy Ackerman
A Politics Of Place: Reading The Signs At Walden Pond, Joy Ackerman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Pilgrimage begins with a vision of place. Look down! The holy is here beneath your feet. The boundary of heaven and earth is not the distant horizon, ever out of reach. It shimmers on the surface of the water. As Thoreau ponders the sky reflected in Walden Pond, he sees the earth encompassed within the spiritual realm. The concept of ‘sacred geography’ also suggests such an embrace. Through the recognition of a pattern in the landscape or the orientation of a temple in the holy city, sacred geography claims that the landscape is a map of the divine order, the …

Discovering Your Cinematic Cultural Identity, John Shelton Lawrence, Marty S. Knepper
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This paired set explores the experience of cultural identities constructed by and experienced through popular film. The essay “Discovering Your Cinematic Cultural Identity” reflects the authors’ decades of residence in the state of Iowa and their personal irritation with the stereotypes that Hollywood regularly calls upon in evoking the American rural. We gained a new perspective on this sort of imagery when it surfaced again in Field of Dreams (1989) and The Bridges of Madison County novel (1992) and film (1995). Each of these films triggered unprecedented film tourism for the state. Through an exploration of these films and others …
Pipeline Transportation Of Petroleum Products In Nigeria: Threats, Challenges And Prospects., G. T. Arosanyin
Pipeline Transportation Of Petroleum Products In Nigeria: Threats, Challenges And Prospects., G. T. Arosanyin
Economic and Financial Review
Pipeline transportation as a mode is crucial for the distribution of petroleum products in Nigeria. The mode has contributed immensely to the movement of crude oil and refined products across the country and for export. The contribution of this mode is, however, under threat from natural ruptures, vandalization, and sub-optimal usage of pipelines. The constraints of other modes in the haulage of refined products over long distances provide a great challenge and opportunity for the pipeline mode to explore. For the pipeline mode to take full advantage of these opportunities, the government must expand the pipeline network, maintain properly the …

Omesubel A Ureor: Workforce Development In Palau From Pre-Contact To 1999, Patrick Ubal Tellei Edd
Dissertations
After being a ward of many nations for over 250 years, the Republic of Palau gained its independence on October 1, 1994. One of the many challenges facing this young nation is the workforce preparation of its people to engage in nation building. After many years of being subjugated by foreign governments, the people have developed a taste of material consumerism. This has driven people away from their subsistence way of life in favor of a market driven economy which calls for infrastructure development that cannot be accomplished if there is a nonexistent skilled workforce to undertake this challenge. To …

How Leaders Use The Construct Of Culture To Influence Change Resistance: A Study Of A Planned Change Initiative In A Combined Government And Military Organization, Derek R. Noether Edd
Dissertations
The construct of organizational culture has been used to interpret various aspects of organizational life, including organizational leadership and organizational change. The literature indicates that leaders can influence organizational change by attending to and modifying an organization's cultural dimensions. Much of this literature, however, is theoretical and speculative, and the empirical work that does exist has focused mostly on business. The purpose of this case study was to develop an understanding of how leaders in a combined government and military organization used the notion of culture during a two-and-a-half year planned change initiative. The study explored the strategies and mental …

National Security And U.S. Child Health Policy: The Origins And Continuing Role Of Medicaid And Epsdt, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery, Peter Shin, Julia Hidalgo
Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs
Medicaid has touched the lives of half of all of the low income young adults of prime military service age. The roots of Medicaid's unique child health eligibility and coverage policies can be traced to a seminal, 1964 government study entitled One Third of a Nation: A Report on Young Men Found Unqualified for Military Service. This study analyzed the underlying causes of the astounding 50 percent rejection rate among the young men drafted into the military in 1962. It documented pervasive evidence of treatable and correctable physical, mental, and developmental conditions, and its findings influenced the course of Medicaid …

Eighteenth-Century Naturalists of Hudson Bay by Stuart and Mary Houston, veteran Saskatchewan ornithologists and historians of northern Canadian exploration, and climatologist Tim Ball provides a welcome, colorful addition to McGill-Queen's University Press's thirty-four-volume Native and Northern Series.
The 1670 Crown charter to the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) granted a vast trading territory including substantial parts of the northern Canadian Plains and a portion of North Dakota and Minnesota. Furs were brought from a network of posts for shipping out of Hudson Bay, primarily at Fort Churchill and York Factory. Most of the posts and their commercial activities were outside of …

Review Of Cherokee Women In Crisis: Trail Of Tears, Civil War, And Allotment, 1838-1907 By Carolyn Ross Johnston, Rowena Mcclinton
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Johnston begins her book by sharing family stories passed down by her Cherokee female relatives whose narratives probably emanated from another ancestor, Caledonia, a victim of Cherokee Forced Removal (1838-1839). To quench her desire to learn more, Johnston seeks to furnish additional information about the sustaining power of women during times of extreme upheavals: forced displacement from the American South (1838-1839); the Civil War and its aftermath (1861-1877); and allotment in severalty of Cherokee lands (1887-1907). Following two other path breaking studies of Cherokee women, Theda Perdue's Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835 (1998) and Sarah H. Hill's Weaving …

This paper will explore the ways in which the rhetoric of the Australian news media – the print media of Melbourne, specifically – has the power to shape and construct public sentiment toward national issues. Specifically, the paper explores the crafting of public opinion toward asylum seekers in the country through the use of specific rhetoric in print media outlets. The paper will focus on the “Tampa” incident of August 2001 as a basis for exploring asylum seeker issues in Australia. With the Agenda Setting Function Theory of Media Communications as a research base, and through personal interviews, extensive research …
