Academic Esl Reading : Semantic Mapping And Lexical Acquisition, Jeffrey Darin Maggard Jan 1998

Academic Esl Reading : Semantic Mapping And Lexical Acquisition, Jeffrey Darin Maggard

Dissertations and Theses

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theoreticians and educators disagree whether vocabulary should be explicitly taught in second language learning classrooms. These individuals are divided about the most efficient way for L2 learners to increase the size of their lexicons. This thesis proposes that explicit vocabulary instruction may significantly facilitate lexical acquisition for adult second language learners in academic contexts.

An experimental study designed to investigate the relationship between explicit vocabulary instruction and the rate of lexical acquisition is described. It was hypothesized that metacognitive strategy training in semantic mapping activities would significantly increase the rate of lexical acquisition for upper-intermediate university …

On Generating The Greek Noun Phrase, Cheryl A. Black, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1996

On Generating The Greek Noun Phrase, Cheryl A. Black, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This article examines the basic noun phrase of Koine Greek and proposes an analysis which is consistent with current views on phrase structure within X-bar theory. The fact that the syntactic distribution of quantifiers, demonstratives and descriptive adjectives is different leads to the (not surprising) proposal that these are distinct word classes in Greek, as in many other languages. The distribution of articles is given serious attention and is found to support the relatively recent proposal (the DP hypothesis) that the traditional noun phrase is best analyzed as a determiner phrase which may then take an NP as its complement.

The Anchor, Volume 108.22: April 26, 1995, Hope College

The Anchor: 1995

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Role Of Laughter In The Thought Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul D. Gerdes Apr 1994

The Role Of Laughter In The Thought Of Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul D. Gerdes

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The objective of this thesis is an analysis of the role of laughter in the thought of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), by which I mean both its influence on his intellectual development, and the incorporation of it in his philosophy. Such an undertaking is important because, while it might seem somewhat odd for a philosopher, and particularly a German philosopher, to consider laughter fundamental to his thought, laughter does play an essential role in all of Nietzsche's writing.

For the purposes of this thesis, I will investigate three separate but interrelated aspects of Nietzsche's thought: the influence of the Dionysian tragic-comic …

[Review Of] Charles C. Moskos. Greek Americans: Struggle And Success, Phillips G. Davies Jan 1992

[Review Of] Charles C. Moskos. Greek Americans: Struggle And Success, Phillips G. Davies

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book should be of primary interest to people at the some thirty colleges and universities which offer courses in Greek American literature and culture. First published in 1980, the major strong point of this book is that the two added chapters and appendix deal with very recent developments on the Greek American scene, particularly the candidacy of Michael Dukakis for president.

Leadership Development At A Training Center In The Philippines, Henry Heng-Lee Tan Edd Jan 1991

Leadership Development At A Training Center In The Philippines, Henry Heng-Lee Tan Edd

Dissertations

The great tragedy today is the dearth of leadership in many of our organizations. The cry for leadership, "Where are the leaders?" reverberates around the world without any active response. Consequently, many organizations have initiated steps to incorporate the process of developing leaders from within their organizations. One such organization is the Campus Crusade for Christ International. This researcher examined the leadership training program of Campus Crusade's Great Commission Training Center (GCTC) in Manila, Philippines by asking nine research questions arising from "How is training for leadership presently incorporated into the GCTC curricula?" A questionnaire was designed incorporating the characteristics …

Relative Clauses In Koine Greek: A Transformational Approach, Martin M. Culy Aug 1989

Relative Clauses In Koine Greek: A Transformational Approach, Martin M. Culy

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I consider the unique set of facts presented by relative clauses in Koine Greek. I give a thorough overview of relativization in Koine including idiomatic usages of the relative pronoun. In particular, I examine the phenomena of internally-headed relative clauses, attraction and inverse attraction.

I give a basic overview of the Greek language, discussing both the historical context as well as the facts of Koine syntax and morphology that are pertinent to the understanding of this thesis.

I provide a basic typology of Koine relative clauses discussing relativization strategy, examples where a relative pronoun is used for …

The Long Term Consequences Of Specific Language Disabilities: The Secondary School Years, Nancy Le Sanders Royal Edd Jan 1987

The Long Term Consequences Of Specific Language Disabilities: The Secondary School Years, Nancy Le Sanders Royal Edd

Dissertations

This research was directed toward the consequences of specific language disabilities on students during their secondary school years. The subjects were secondary students who had been identified as having the characteristics of specific language disabilities (SLD or developmental dyslexia) and who received remedial instruction while in elementary school. Remedial treatment utilized the Slingerland Adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham MultiSensory Approach to Language Arts with instruction given within regular education classrooms. These students were compared with a randomly selected cohort comparison group who were not known to have language learning problems. Major findings included: A higher percentage of the SLD group (81.4%) …

Cataloging Medieval And Renaissance Manuscripts: A Review Article, Richard W. Clement Jan 1985

Cataloging Medieval And Renaissance Manuscripts: A Review Article, Richard W. Clement

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Until recently it could have been argued with much justification that the cataloging of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the United States began and ended with Seymour De Ricci's Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada (New York: H. W. Wilson, 1935-40) and Supplement (New York: Bibliographical Society of America, 1962). Of course, many excellent catalogs were produced before the Census and have been produced since (although most are of a specialized nature), yet the Census and its Supplement must be regarded as the one great landmark in cataloging in this country. It was the …
