Nutrition As An Index To Relative Economic Development, Kenneth E. Rosing
Nutrition As An Index To Relative Economic Development, Kenneth E. Rosing
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Investigation of nutrition as a reliable measure of relative economic development. Fourteen specific indices were grouped and combined to make six general indices. Subjected to the Kendall test of concordance, they were found to measure the same basic phenomenon that, on examination, appeared to be symptomatic of economic development and, therefore, reliably combined into a single index. A nutrition index was then compiled for specific countries in terms of gross calories per capita per day and adjusted to age structure, climate ami .quality of diet. All countries for which information was available were ranked by this nutritional index and tested …
Measurement Of Vegetation And Terrain Characteristics On Small Scale Vertical Aerial Photographs, Merle P. Meyer
Measurement Of Vegetation And Terrain Characteristics On Small Scale Vertical Aerial Photographs, Merle P. Meyer
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Few events in recent years have stirred public imagination and interest to the degree occasioned by the uses made of aerial photographs in the Cuban affair. The average earth scientist, however, was not taken by surprise since the basic methods, materials and principles involved were not new to him. As a matter of fact, since World War II, aerial photography has become an everyday, virtually indispensable tool to most earth feature and natural resource analysts. In order better to understand the application of aerial photographs to such civil pursuits, it would be well at this point to differentiate the two …

The War Against Surplus Breeding, Irene Castle
The War Against Surplus Breeding, Irene Castle
Puppy Mills Collection
Almost the whole humane movement is snowed under and overwhelmed by the still mounting flood of surplus cats and dogs. The surplus turns our shelters into sordid slaughterhouses. It distorts and perverts the thinking of many even of our very best people. Hundreds of our societies are kept permanently on the edge of bankruptcy by the single problem of taking in and disposing of cats and dogs which are homeless or unwanted simply because of the immense surplus of such animals.
It is so easy for all of us to throw up our hands and denounce veterinarians for the high …

The House And Senate Appropriations Subcommittees On The District Of Columbia, Mary Ferrell
The House And Senate Appropriations Subcommittees On The District Of Columbia, Mary Ferrell
Student Scholarship
This thesis examines the intricate and often overlooked role of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees for the District of Columbia in governing the nation's capital. Because Washington, D.C. lacks a traditional representative government, these fifteen congressional members exercise ultimate authority over the city's policy and finances by controlling its only available funds. The author highlights a unique constitutional arrangement where Congress holds exclusive legislation over the District, resulting in a system where residents pay taxes above the national average yet remain powerless to decide how those funds are allocated.
The study details the internal dynamics of these subcommittees, noting …
The Democratic Study Group, Joyce Bailey
The Democratic Study Group, Joyce Bailey
Student Scholarship
This thesis, written in 1967, examines the development and operational structure of the Democratic Study Group, a formal organization of liberal Democrats within the United States House of Representatives. The group emerged in response to the perceived inefficiency of the Democratic Party's numerical majority, which was frequently stymied by a conservative coalition of Southern Democrats and Republicans who controlled key legislative instruments like the Rules Committee. Officially established in September 1959, the Democratic Study Group sought to provide a cohesive voice for junior, issue-oriented members from contested districts who felt marginalized by the traditional power-oriented leadership.
The document details the …

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.
The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

The Democratic Committee On Committees In The United States Senate, Irene Gene Ritter
The Democratic Committee On Committees In The United States Senate, Irene Gene Ritter
Student Scholarship
This paper examines the history and modern operation of the Democratic Steering Committee in the United States Senate as of 1964. Historically, the Senate was slow to adopt standing committees, originally relying on numerous select committees before establishing a formal system in 1816. While the power to appoint these committees shifted between the presiding officer and the Senate ballot during the 19th century, it eventually settled into a system controlled by party organizations and the Democratic Caucus. A significant revolution occurred in 1913 when progressive Democrats successfully bypassed the seniority system to enact Woodrow Wilson’s legislative agenda, though this shift …
An Example Of Crop Dynamics In Minnesota--The Soybean, Philip L. Tideman
An Example Of Crop Dynamics In Minnesota--The Soybean, Philip L. Tideman
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The soybean is a plant which has been domesticated for several thousand years. The exact time and place of this domestication is not known but the domesticated plant is referred to early in Chinese literature (Morse, 194 7 : 138). The hearth of domestication appears to have been northern China but very early it spread as a crop over a considerable part of Eastern Asia and became a common crop in the areas known today as Japan, China and Manchuria, Formosa, and Korea. Until very recent times the soybean was only a botanical curiosity to the European or Western World …

A Comparative Study Of Greenup And Toledo, Illinois, Edgar W. Morgan
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to make a comparative analysis of Greenup and Toledo, Illinois. The intent is to investigate and compare the historical origin, reasons for settlement, early development, growth patterns, industry, lines of transportation, and elements of similarity and difference between the towns.
Included in the study are interpretations presented as to why the towns grew up so close together, why one became larger than the other, why the one became the county-seat and still remained smaller, how industry and transportation are important to these communities, and the ultimate character which has evolved for each community. Also …
