The Office of International Services and Programs is a major component of the Institute for Global Initiatives, and is also an important department of Kennesaw State University. With the awareness of internationalization and global integration, it shares different cultures and customs, serves and helps international students, and greatly develops the study abroad programs.
During the internship in the office, I realized the importance of international communication and mutual learning. Thus, I paid much attention to the ISEP (International Student Exchange Programs). Majoring in Public Administration, I tried to combine the theory of project management to the practice of ISEP. Thus …

In Case You Missed It: Big White Lie, Peter Zarrow
In Case You Missed It: Big White Lie, Peter Zarrow
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
I want to share some impressions of a book that the sinologically inclined (like me) might otherwise ignore. Big White Lie, by John Fitzgerald, is most importantly a polemic about Australian history—subtitled “Chinese Australians in White Australia”—but it also has a lot to say about modern Chinese culture, politics, and business. What follows is not a systematic review but a few xinde: somewhat random and incomplete notes on what I got out of the book.
The study of overseas Chinese has always seemed to me like an orphan field—an interesting and important area of research that has long produced major …
Review Of Transatlantic Voices: Interpretations Of Native North American Literatures. Edited By Elvira Pulitano, Laura Castor
Review Of Transatlantic Voices: Interpretations Of Native North American Literatures. Edited By Elvira Pulitano, Laura Castor
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Transatlantic Voices represents some of the most recent critical studies of contemporary Native North American literature by fourteen European scholars. Drawing on Paul Gilroy's notion of the Atlantic as a site for cross-cultural exchange in our globalized era, editor Elvira Pulitano suggests that until now the Atlantic has not been sufficiently recognized as important for Native American studies. Transatlantic Voices seeks to fill this gap. Acutely aware of their strategic location as neither Natives nor Americans, the authors explore various kinds of "crossings": theoretical, geographical, thematic, and epistemological. Their essays present original contributions to current debates in Native North American …
Chinese New Year In West Kalimantan: Ritual Theatre And Political Circus, Margaret Chan
Chinese New Year In West Kalimantan: Ritual Theatre And Political Circus, Margaret Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Since 2002, when Chinese New Year became a national holiday in Indonesia, spirit medium parades on the fifteen day of the New Year (called Cap Go Meh) have been growing in size in certain West Kalimantan towns, especially Singkawang. This parade in particular has become a major tourist draw-card. Referring to local history, Chinese popular religion and Hakka culture, this article applies a performance analysis methodology to dissect this contemporary phenomenon from religious, historical and inter-ethnic perspectives. It shows how the parades have become enmeshed in current inter-ethnic politics in West Kalimantan, as well as revealing the way that adaptations …
More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon
More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In the aftermath of the May 1998 riots that forced President Suharto to step down, ethnic Chinese received unprecedented freedom to assert their long suppressed cultural and religious identity. Following the transition from assimilation to multiculturalism, for the first time in over three decades Chinese culture became more visible and ethnic Chinese could finally enjoy the freedom to celebrate Chinese New Year (Imlek) publicly. This article focuses on the politics of the re-emergent Chinese New Year celebration in the Indonesian public sphere. It demonstrates the significance of Imlek as an ethnic symbol to Chinese-Indonesians. Borrowing Hobsbawm’s concept of “invented tradition”, …

Africanisms And Cultural Modifications: A Study At Southall Quarter, Williamsburg, Virginia, Jessie Chaiya Cohen
Africanisms And Cultural Modifications: A Study At Southall Quarter, Williamsburg, Virginia, Jessie Chaiya Cohen
LSU Master's Theses
Archaeological studies at sites of enslaved Africans and African-Americans have been intensely undertaken in recent years. In particular, the search for Africanisms and cultural processes has become a common trend within these studies. I analyzed previously recorded investigations of Southall Quarter (44JC969), an eighteenth-century enslaved African and African-American site in James City County, Virginia. Dominating anthropological themes of slave resistance, owner-imposed hegemony, and agentic actions guided my search for Africanisms at Southall Quarter. I hoped to prove that the distance of the quarters from Southall’s residence and therefore the lax owner supervision provided the enslaved inhabitants with opportunities to express …
Demographic Profile Of Palestinian Migration, Ismail Lubbad
Demographic Profile Of Palestinian Migration, Ismail Lubbad
Faculty Journal Articles
This working paper was prepared for the Centre of Forced Migration and Refugee Studies (FMRS) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) within the overall framework of the creation of a Middle Eastern and African Center for migration and refugee studies. The lack of available border registration data - Palestinian borders in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) are controlled by Israel - has restricted research on the demography of Palestinian migration. Furthermore, demographic statistics have been a political issue in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict since the beginning of the 20th century. A number of research studies, however, have been conducted on …

Review Of The Book A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles Of South Asian Women In America, Anjali Ram
Review Of The Book A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles Of South Asian Women In America, Anjali Ram
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Ever since western feminist scholarship was accused of defining gender in transhistorical and transcultural ways, there have been attempts to add the category, `woman of colour’, in feminist enterprises that rang e from the academic to the administrative. Such toke n gestures inevitably re-inscribe the problem by glossing over distinctive material histories and the particularity of women’s experiences and struggles. For those of us who refuse such additive, tokenist approaches, A Patchwork Shawl edited by Shamita Das Dasgupta is a welcome contribution. Written by South Asian immigrant and first generation women, A Patchwork Shawlis, to us e Dasgupta’s words, `a …

The Anchor, Volume 101.14: January 18, 1989, Hope College
The Anchor, Volume 101.14: January 18, 1989, Hope College
The Anchor: 1989
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
