Since this paper has concentrated on the cultural and societal influences on women's roles, and how these affect their criminal behavior, these variables rather than exclusively economic ones, will be presented now in relatively economic homogeneous contexts. The remaining discussion will, therefore, compare the patterns and trends of female criminal behavior in England-Wales and Japan with those in the United States. A final note will be made on some research done by Safilios-Rothschild in Greece concerning socio-cultural changes which have occurred in Greece, and how they have affected the commission of "honor crimes."

These are seven monographs published by the Center on Aging at San Diego University (The Campanile Press, 1978). Each monograph is the result of a team of researchers investigating an ethnic group. These cross-cultural studies of minority elders in San Diego investigate samples of Blacks, Chinese, Japanese, Latinos, Philipinos, Samoans, and Guamanians aged 50 and over.

The Anchor: 1979

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

International and cross-cultural research concerning populations living in poverty have uncovered similarities in attitudes and behaviors associated with participation in society's institutional systems. One of these similarities is that feelings of alienation are an inevitable "reaction of the poor to their marginal position in a class-stratified, highly individuated, capitalistic society" (Lewis, 1966:21). These feelings, in turn, have led poor people in general to withdraw from participation in community life, including the community's institutions charged with the task of delivering services associated with physical welfare. Themes Elicited By The Senior Apperception Test In Institutionalized Older Adults, Nancy A. Stock

The purpose of this study was to investigate the major themes elicited by the 16 stimulus cards of the Senior Apperception Test (SAT) (Bellak, 1975). The SAT was administered to 40 institutionalized male and female volunteers from seven nursing homes in the central Illinois region. They ranged in age from 61 to 97 years of age. There were 20 females (mean age = 78.6 years, S.D. = 8.3 years) and 20 males (mean age = 78.l years, S.D. = 10.4 years). Prior to receiving Ms. Valentine's book, Hustling and Other Hard Work, this reviewer felt a sense of pessimism. That is, here is another book trying to clarify black folk's problems. This pessimistic sense is especially acute during this time when the label “minority” is still being used to lump millions of people together when their cultural-racial diversity defies such grouping. (This minority grouping oftentimes serves as a comment label or package for old racist attitudes and stereotypes.)

A startling look at black separatist movements of the past reveals interesting facts that parallel the rise and fall of the contemporary organizations with separatist ideologies. The author focuses on the period from 1960 to 1972, analyzing five black social movement organizations: The Nation of Islam/Black Muslims, The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Student Non-Violent (later National) Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party, and the Republic of New Africa (RNA).

Ethnic studies is a rather strange field. In the first place, it is not a "field" in the traditional sense of other academic disciplines, but rather it seeks to include any and all disciplines. Second, it deals with people, and as our colleagues in the so-called "behavioral sciences" have discovered, people are perhaps the most unpredictable of all living things to study, thus the problems are many. Eliot Wigginton, after six weeks of classroom teaching at the Rabun-Gap Nacoochee School in rural north Georgia, was frustrated because he found that his students were not interested in the courses he was prepared to teach. He had graduated from Cornell University in May 1966 with a master's degree and had come to Rabun-Gap to instruct mountain children in English and geography. He realized, fortunately, that if his students were bored it was he who had bored them. He believed that it might be better him to seek another career (Wigginton, 1972).
