Facilitating And Hindering Factors In Implementing Managerial Technology: A Socio-Technical System Process, Eduardo Alejandro Salas Garcia Apr 1984

Facilitating And Hindering Factors In Implementing Managerial Technology: A Socio-Technical System Process, Eduardo Alejandro Salas Garcia

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

In recent years scientists, researchers and practitioners have focused on the application and theory of managerial technologies in developing countries. Evidence suggests that the implementation of these technologies is widely sought in these countries, but that they suffer from several limitations. Among these are: (a) lack of environmental compatibility in the societies and cultures in which attempts are made to apply such organizational theories and practices; (b) differences between economic systems of developing nations and industrialized nations (c) differences in political history, values and practices and (d) differences in organizational functioning and behavior as a result of these three conditions. …

The Last Word: Reality Into Fiction - 1984, Nancy L. Street Mar 1984

The Last Word: Reality Into Fiction - 1984, Nancy L. Street

Bridgewater Review

Television programming In the United States is transforming our society. Unaware of its incursions, Americans literally “buy into” dramatized patterns of behavior. From the evening news to advertising to prime-time drama like “Dynasty” or “Matt Houston” the distinctions between reality and fiction are blurred if not obliterated. Drama becomes reality; reality, e.g., the news, becomes drama. Contemporary American television posits a world view impacting on interpersonal interactions, family structure, cultural transmission, political decision-making, war and what it means “to know.”

[Review Of] Paula Gunn Allen, Ed. Studies In American Indian Literature: Critical Essays And Course Design, Barbara Hiura

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Studies in American Indian Literature edited by Paula Gunn Allen is an excellent literary survey and resource book for instructors interested in developing college level courses on American Indians. Allen develops the format by including "critical studies in American Indian literature that explain and/or use basic themes, motifs, structures, and symbols found in traditional and modern American Indian literature." These critical essays lead into course outlines for developing American Indian classes.

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren Jan 1984

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Recent works by students of contemporary ritual (or "ritologists," as Ronald Grimes calls them) supports the notion that ritual is an important variable not just in tribal culture but also in modern industrial culture. I'm referring to studies that have been undertaken by such ardent ritual exegetes as Roy Rappaport, Barbara Myerhoff, Ronald Grimes, Robert Bocock, Sally Falk Moore, and Richard Schechner. Grimes has begun the important work of consolidating research on ritual; he has taken a field of scholarship which was doggedly parochial and helped to expand it into a protoscience of its own. (1) The work of these …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Relation Between Degree Of American Acculturation And Androgyny, Chui-Liu Serena Gui

Dissertations

Problem. Research has identified culture as one of the factors which reinforces sex-appropriate behaviors and punishes inappropriate behaviors for each gender. The purpose of this study was to validate the theory that culture is an influencing factor in the development of sex-role acquisition through studying two diversely different cultures.

Method. This study employed the Bem Inventory for the measurement of sex-role typing. There were a total of 374 college-age females from either a Chinese culture or Anglo-American culture who participated in the study. The subjects were divided into five groups according to the degree of American acculturation. Three null hypotheses were …

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Angler's Angle is an ethnographic (cultural description) of the bass fishermen . The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: (1) to present a better understanding of the ethnographic process and its usefulness as a too l within the social sciences, and (2) to illustrate this usefulness by the study of a cultural scene that often goes unnoticed in our Western society. An examination in Chapter 1 on the background of cultural studies (undertaken for the most part to de scribe non-Western societies), sets the tone for the use of ethnography today. Research on sub-cultures within our own society is …

Beyond 'Formal' Vs. 'Informal' Education: Uses Of Psychological Theory In Anthropological Research, Claudia Strauss Sep 1983

Beyond 'Formal' Vs. 'Informal' Education: Uses Of Psychological Theory In Anthropological Research, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

For at least the last ten years cross-cultural research on the cognitive consequences of education has been dominated by the theoretical dichotomy between "formal" and "informal" education. The paradigm of formal education is the style of schooling developed in the industrialized West. It has been defined as any form of education that is deliberate, carried on "out of context" in a special setting outside of the routines of daily life, and made the responsibility of the larger social group. "Informal education" refers to education that takes place "in context" as children participate in everyday adult activities. It is the predominant …

Memory For An Event In Two- And Five-Years Olds, Evelyn Harm Haeden Sep 1983

Memory For An Event In Two- And Five-Years Olds, Evelyn Harm Haeden

Student Work

The present study focused on the development of memory in young children. The subjects were eighty-three two- and five-year old children who participated in immediate recall memory tasks for toys, pictures in a story and nonstory context, and ingredients used in making graham cracker cookies. These children were tested in their own homes. Long term memory for toys and ingredients was also assessed at one week. Parents were asked to record children's spontaneous comments in a scripted diary for the week following the experimenter's visit. At the end of the week, a photograph of the experimenter and child, which had …

Problems Of International Reporting Focus: El Salvador, Lucinda Perez-Mroch May 1983

Problems Of International Reporting Focus: El Salvador, Lucinda Perez-Mroch

Whittier Scholars Program

This project is a research paper on media reporting and the free press, specifically on journalists in El Salvador. The paper begins by discussing a brief history on the media and its role in the United States government. The author follows this up by discussing the history of El Salvador beginning with the revolution in 1979. Furthermore, the author makes many parallels between the media reporting from the Vietnam war to the situation in El Salvador. The newspapers are filled with conflicting stories and over exaggerations. The issue of why the media is not fully reporting the truth is discussed as …

Corporate Linkage And Control Of The Corporate Economy: New Evidence And A Reinterpretation, Harold R. Kerbo, Richard L. Della Fave Apr 1983

Corporate Linkage And Control Of The Corporate Economy: New Evidence And A Reinterpretation, Harold R. Kerbo, Richard L. Della Fave

Social Sciences

This paper begins with a brief critical review of the major perspectives in the debate concerning ownership and control of major corporations. After examination of a new source of data compiled by a Senate committee (pertaining especially to the expansion of stock control by institutional investors and, most importantly, by major commercial banks), we argue that none of these perspectives is strongly supported. In concluding we tentatively outline a perspective wliicli seems to provide a better “fit” to the data. We argue that the dominant force in the overall capitalist economy is now an “intercorporate complex” of major corporations, with …

Psi: An Attractive Alternative For The Basic Speech Communication Course, William J. Seiler Jan 1983

Psi: An Attractive Alternative For The Basic Speech Communication Course, William J. Seiler

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), often referred to as the Keller Plan after its founder Fred Keller, was developed to teach introductory psychology courses. Since it was first used, however, PSI has seen widespread use in many disciplines. Sherman estimates that six thousand PSI courses have been taught at all levels of education by virtually all disciplines. Boylan reports that more than thirteen hundred individuals presently use the PSI method on the university and college level; that 80.5% of the individuals surveyed represent four-year institutions, with the remainder representing two-year institutions; that 66% of the colleges and universities are …

Soviet Foreign Policy Decision-Making: An Analysis Of Two Soviet Foreign Policy Decisions, Patricia Myers Jan 1983

Soviet Foreign Policy Decision-Making: An Analysis Of Two Soviet Foreign Policy Decisions, Patricia Myers

Whittier Scholars Program

The Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 came as a surprise to most of the world, including the Warsaw Pact nations and specially Czechoslovakia itself. The placement of offensive missiles in Cuba in 1962 by the Soviet Union came as a largely unexpected move to the United States, a crisis situation that provided no easy solution. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was another act of Soviet foreign policy that was not anticipated by the rest of the world until it occurred. The formulation of Soviet foreign policy remains, by and large, a mystery to all those who are not involved …
