Social And Structural Factors In The Development Of Baltimore's Low Back Vowels, Aidan J. Malanoski
Social And Structural Factors In The Development Of Baltimore's Low Back Vowels, Aidan J. Malanoski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is concerned with the low back vowels of Baltimore English: what low back systems occur, and how these systems have changed among Black and white Baltimoreans. I draw on two sources of data: 48 interviews that I conducted with natives of Baltimore and its inner suburbs, and 18 oral history interviews that were conducted from 1978 to 1981. In Chapter 3, I argue for the inclusion of the pre-rhotic sets START and NORTH in typologies of English low back vowels. With these sets included, several previously unattested low back systems are found in Baltimore. These are united by …
The Game Within: An Anthropological Approach To Games And Play, Nehal Maged Mohamed
The Game Within: An Anthropological Approach To Games And Play, Nehal Maged Mohamed
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is based on an eighteen-month ethnography of El Ghawasa, an Egyptian play-based organization that designs educational games, tools, and services. Claiming that El Ghawasa, with its ethos of play, seeks to create an alternative to the capitalist corporate structure. Through tracking how this organization navigates ruptures, negotiates constraints, and experiments with different practices and internal restructuring, I explore the possibilities and limitations of El Ghawasa, while attempting to resist absorption by the very system it opposes. I ask: when the rules keep changing (while the logic of the capitalist corporate structure remains the same), and the boundaries of …
Authoritarianism, Hostility And Threat: An Analysis Of American Political Podcasts Surrounding The 2024 Presidential Election, Noah D. Cohen
Authoritarianism, Hostility And Threat: An Analysis Of American Political Podcasts Surrounding The 2024 Presidential Election, Noah D. Cohen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Political rhetoric surrounding key events has seen sharp increases in emotionally affective speech, intergroup sentiment, and rhetoric unbecoming of democratic societies in recent years. Similarly, semi-democratic and ideologically driven speech has become increasingly normalized within an era of political polarization and hardline beliefs in modern media. Within this economy of outrage, sensational and largely unmoderated media formats, particularly podcasts, have become a mainstay of political information and discourse. This raises an important question: how does rhetoric surrounding political events construct intergroup sentiment and authoritarian rhetoric within political media, particularly American political podcasts? Further, given political podcasts’ growing social influence in …
(Wp 2026-04) The Concept Of Position And Its Ontological Meaning In The History Of Economics, John B. Davis
(Wp 2026-04) The Concept Of Position And Its Ontological Meaning In The History Of Economics, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This paper examines the concept of relative position in the history of economics understood as ‘being in a position’ in a structure of positions. This is first discussed in macro-distributional terms in connection with Ricardo and Marx and in micro-behavioral terms in connection with Du Bois and Veblen. The paper then discusses two recent approaches in economics that employ the concept of relative position in a combined macro-micro analysis: the capability approach and stratification economics. For explicitly ontological analysis of the concept, the paper compares three different interpretative strategies from outside economics: Cambridge social positioning theory, embodied and distributed cognition …
Practical Aspects Of Religious Social Work In Modern Ukraine, Inna Vladislavivna Kovalchuk
Practical Aspects Of Religious Social Work In Modern Ukraine, Inna Vladislavivna Kovalchuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This work analyzes the current state and specifics of the activity of religious organizations in the social sphere of Ukraine. Special attention is paid to the transformation of religious social work in the conditions of a full-scale war, where religious communities have become key agents of humanitarian, psychological and spiritual assistance. The article examines the mechanisms of interaction between the church, the state and non-governmental organizations in solving social problems. The findings are based on the practical experiences of those working with internally displaced persons (IDPs), veterans, large families, and individuals facing difficult life circumstances. Unique methods of denominational assistance …

Comfort In Cases Of Sickness: Health And Colonialism At The Eastern Pequot Reservation, 1800-1850, Katherine N. Brauckmann
Comfort In Cases Of Sickness: Health And Colonialism At The Eastern Pequot Reservation, 1800-1850, Katherine N. Brauckmann
Graduate Masters Theses
Health and sickness were major concerns for the Eastern Pequot community in the first half of the 19th century. At this time, the Eastern Pequot’s collective finances were controlled by a court-appointed overseer who rented reservation land to non-Pequot individuals and used the generated funds to purchase goods and services for those on the reservation. In an 1841 petition to remove an overseer for failing in his duties, issues of health were brought up twice among their grievances: that they received little support “in Sickness or in health” and that “our Land if family rented […] would add much to …
The Furry Community As A Case Study In Identity-Related Conflict, Patrick Hampton
The Furry Community As A Case Study In Identity-Related Conflict, Patrick Hampton
Graduate Masters Theses
The “furry” community has gained notoriety both on the internet and in physical spaces for the dramatic portrayal of animal-based personas referred to as “fursonas.” This group has become the subject of ridicule and moral concern due to the occasionally controversial nature of the content produced by some members of the community. However, there are many different interpretations both within and outside of the community around what the community entails. In this thesis, I examine how the furry community and the identity of its members is shaped by external pressure or social stigmatization? I answer this through the following three …
The Nature Of Things: An Investigation Into A Viking Age Assembly Site, Tyler L. Perkins
The Nature Of Things: An Investigation Into A Viking Age Assembly Site, Tyler L. Perkins
Graduate Masters Theses
Icelandic sagas and archaeological research suggest that Viking Age Icelandic assembly sites or things (þing) were generally occupied for brief periods of time during annual gatherings. One of the archaeological manifestations of repeated temporary occupation around assembly sites is small booths. At Hegranesþing in North Iceland, besides multiple booths that cover the site, there is also evidence of long-term occupation and farming. The Skagafjörður Church and Settlement Survey conducted geophysical and coring surveys, excavated three test pits into middens from different periods of occupation, and excavated one test trench into the homefield enclosure (tún) wall. The results suggest Hegranesþing, besides …

Fashion, Lifestyle, And Symbolic Capital: Identity And Resistance In Eka Kurniawan’S Beauty Is A Wound, Dewi Meyrasyawati, Cysakaren Diva Pratiwi, Nisar Ul-Haq
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This study examines how fashion culture and lifestyle, understood as modes of self presentation, social performance, and everyday practice, operate as tools of identity construction and resistance in Eka Kurniawan’s Beauty Is a Wound. The objective is to reveal how beauty, personal choices, and public perception function as symbolic capital in negotiating gendered power relations, class hierarchies, and political constraints. Using close textual analysis, the research explores how female characters, particularly Dewi Ayu, mobilize appearance, behavior, and life decisions to challenge dominant ideologies and redefine their roles in society. The findings show that fashion culture in the novel extends beyond …
A Post-Positivist Perspective On The Varieties Of Qualitative Research: The Foris Framework, Marius Bytautas
A Post-Positivist Perspective On The Varieties Of Qualitative Research: The Foris Framework, Marius Bytautas
The Qualitative Report
With the aim of bringing clarity to the realm of qualitative research—and offering a transition from tradition to methodological rationale—I employ Millian and Popperian inductive analysis methods to build a post-positivist account regarding the diversity of qualitative research varieties. I am responding to the problem that common labels in qualitative research often obscure the epistemic reasoning through which a study approaches its object. A brief set of working definitions is introduced to support the framework, but the main contribution is the conceptualization of research approach in five dimensions: focus, orientation, relation to the object, researcher intrusiveness, and scale (FORIS). By …

Representasi Identitas Dan Gastronomi Budaya Kuliner Jawa Dalam Lima Lagu Karya Ki Narto Sabdo, Aditya Pratama, Darmoko -, Ari Prasetiyo, Dwi Woro Retno Mastuti
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Culinary is not just food and drink, but has transformed into a study of culinary gastronomy which focuses on aspects of history, values, philosophy, taste and components. The study of the problems discussed in this research is related to the cultural identity of Javanese culinary gastronomy in the five songs by Ki Narto Sabdo. Descriptive qualitative research methods with an objective approach were applied in this research. This research uses Santich's culinary gastronomy theory and Stuart Hall's theory of cultural identity representation with a constructionist approach. As a result, the representation of Javanese culinary gastronomic cultural identity is built on …

Pendidikan Sebagai Pengasingan: Politik Kolonial Terhadap Keluarga Singamangaraja Pasca-1907, Uli Kozok
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article examines the post-1907 trajectories of the family of Singamangaraja following the death of Ompu Pulo Batu and the final military campaign of the Dutch colonial state in the Batak lands. It traces how the colonial government integrated his widows and children into the colonial order through internment, Christianisation, exile, and education in Java. Drawing on colonial archives, contemporary newspapers, and mission reports, the article reconstructs the life trajectories of the five surviving sons of Singamangaraja and situates them within the framework of colonial strategies of conquest and stabilisation. The study shows that these policies combined elements of protection, …

Shaping Disease: Colonial Stigma And The Politics Of Health In Banyuwangi, The Early Twentieth Century, Rifa'i Shodiq Fathoni, Skriptyan Noor Hidayatullah Syuhri, Vini’Matu Hikmah, Ardhita Zahra Namira
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article examines the colonial stigma attached to Banyuwangi as an “unhealthy region” in the early 20th century, a label used to justify massive exploitation of its natural resources. Using a historical method, this research analyzes how this stigma not only served as a tool for colonial legitimation but also causatively created conditions that triggered ecological disasters and a public health crisis in a previously isolated area. Through an analysis of primary sources such as colonial reports, health journals, and newspapers, this article traces how large-scale plantation exploitation, enabled by the stigma, led to deforestation, uncontrolled labor migration, and poor …

From Mandala To Palace: The Transformation Of Kidung Artati Into Ranggasutrasna Version Of Serat Kidungan From The Surakarta, Agung Kriswanto, I Made Suparta
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article examines the transformation of Kidung Artati from the Merapi–Merbabu milieu into the version preserved in Serat Kidungan compiled by Ranggasutrasna in the Surakarta court. The study aims to trace the process of textual transmission and ideological transformation that occurred when a kidung originating in an ascetic milieu was incorporated into a later courtly literary context. The sources used in this research consist of Kidung Artati and Kidung Rumeksa Ing Wengi from the Merapi–Merbabu manuscripts, as well as the Ranggasutrasna version of Serat Kidungan. The method applied is textual criticism and comparative textual analysis in order to identify …
The Negotiated Identities Of Refugee-Background Women During Resettlement, Iuliia Fakhrutdinova
The Negotiated Identities Of Refugee-Background Women During Resettlement, Iuliia Fakhrutdinova
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Refugee-background women experience unique challenges while resettling in the U.S. as they navigate complicated transnational gender roles, education gaps, migration trauma, learning a new language, and literacy in the adaptation process during resettlement, which can derail the productive paths they are on. Therefore, ignoring refugee-background women’s unique experiences and failing to understand their identities prevents our society from doing social justice and creating a space for a smooth adaptation to the new context. Language plays a paramount role in identity formation, as it moves away from the belief that identity is an essential concept. For refugee-background women during resettlement, their …

With Students, As A Student: Using Reflexive Autoethnography To Make Sense Of Navigating Student–Researcher Liminality In A Ph.D., Melody Bishop
The Qualitative Report
Postgraduate researchers (PGRs) are increasingly encouraged to practice reflexivity. But there is a lack of PGR-authored literature about what it means to negotiate multiple identities, particularly for student–researchers doing research with students. This paper explores challenges experienced during a longitudinal Ph.D. project involving undergraduate students with long-term health conditions. I present outcomes of a reflexive autoethnographic analysis of a diary kept making sense of research challenges, including holding dual positions as a student–researcher at the same institution. Drawing on the notion of liminality, I argue that the boundaries between my student–researcher identities, and between myself and participants, have been consistently …

Theatre Practice As A Restorative Medium For Collective Memory In The Collaborative Performance ``Install Ulang: Surawana Lewat Jalan Memutar'', Rifqi Haekal Amanullah, Wahyu Novianto
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study examines the socio-cultural estrangement between members of the Canggu Village community and the reliefs and spatial environment of Surawana Temple. It explores how theatrical practice can serve as a performative medium for reactivating and reinterpreting collective memory associated with a historical site embedded in everyday life. Focusing on the collaborative performance Install Ulang: Surawana Lewat Jalan Memutar, the study employs artistic research with a practice-based approach, with the lead author acting as director and artistic facilitator. Data were collected through interviews, observation, literature review, workshops, artistic exploration, and post-performance reflection involving temple caretakers, farmers, archaeologists, and local …
Bridging The Abyss: Reclaiming Spirituality In Academic Knowledge Production, Neil Boland
Bridging The Abyss: Reclaiming Spirituality In Academic Knowledge Production, Neil Boland
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Over recent decades, Western academia has shown a growing interest in spirituality, accompanied by methodological innovations and epistemological expansion. Nevertheless, spiritual inquiry continues to be subtly subordinated to scientific rationalism, with Western science often presiding as gatekeeper over what is considered legitimate knowledge. Drawing on Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ concept of abyssal thinking, this article argues that spiritual and experiential forms of knowing remain largely relegated to the far side of an epistemic divide, valued only insofar as they can be reframed within scientific norms. Despite increasing institutional recognition of spirituality in fields such as education, psychology, and medicine, …

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community
Societal progress thrives through the dynamic interplay of diverse disciplines, each contributing unique insights to advance positive change. Interdisciplinary collaboration plays a crucial role in addressing complex social challenges by combining the strengths of various fields. This article explores the historical evolution, theoretical foundations, and practical applications of interdisciplinary collaboration to foster positive social change. The discussion provides definitions of key terms, such as societal progress and positive social change, within distinct ideological and contextual frameworks. It makes use of these to clarify the direction of positive change in different societal settings. Historical and contemporary examples, such as Bolivia’s social …
A Treasure House Called Traditional Knowledge, Sudha Seshayyan
A Treasure House Called Traditional Knowledge, Sudha Seshayyan
International Journal of Traditional Knowledge
Centuries of observation, experimentation, and cultural continuity have formed the basis of traditional knowledge, which is a huge and complex repository of scientific information. Engineering, hydrology, fluid dynamics, medicine and cosmology are just a few of the many domains in which ancient Indian wisdom demonstrates an astonishing depth of factual understanding that is ingrained in daily activities, architectural principles, and literature. From Avvaiyar’s verses of wisdom to the magnificent temples whose architecture continues to amaze humanity and the structural brilliance of the Kallanai dam constructed in the second century CE and still serving the local population, all serve as testimony …
Agrarian Festivals Of India- Embedded Traditional Knowledge About Environment And Ecology Preserved Across Millennia, Lopamudra Maitra
Agrarian Festivals Of India- Embedded Traditional Knowledge About Environment And Ecology Preserved Across Millennia, Lopamudra Maitra
International Journal of Traditional Knowledge
With a prominent agrarian economy, it is important to note the many agrarian festivals from across the nation. These festivals also help to highlight many rites, rituals and folklore, which forms the basic ethos of the celebrations and within the many layers of these are embedded knowledge about environment and ecology, which has been passed down through thousands of centuries. These have also been variously corroborated through archaeological, historical and epigraphical records of ancient India. This paper is an attempt to highlight this historicity of the agrarian festivals of India, which also corresponds to the mainstream festivals from across India, …
Beyond Extremism: Rethinking Anarchism In Contemporary Indonesian Security Discourse Through Anarchist Criminology, I Gusti Ngurah Aditia Tjandra Asmara
Beyond Extremism: Rethinking Anarchism In Contemporary Indonesian Security Discourse Through Anarchist Criminology, I Gusti Ngurah Aditia Tjandra Asmara
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This article examines how contemporary Indonesian security discourse increasingly frames anarchism through the categories of radicalism, extremism, and national security threats. Responding to the emergence of academic and security-oriented narratives that position anarchism as a form of anti-state extremism, this article asks how anarchism is represented and securitized within contemporary Indonesian criminological and security discourse. Using a qualitative critical-discourse analysis approach, this article draws upon perspectives from Anarchist Criminology and Cultural Criminology to examine the construction of anarchism within contemporary Indonesian security narratives. The findings demonstrate that anarchism is frequently reduced into a simplified and homogeneous category of extremism through …
Unboxing Relations: An Ethnographic Study Of Blind Box Consumption In The U.S., Wendy Zheng
Unboxing Relations: An Ethnographic Study Of Blind Box Consumption In The U.S., Wendy Zheng
Sociology Honors Projects
Blind box consumption is a format for purchasing packaged toys without knowing the specific item in advance. It has become a global trend and is often viewed as irrational or gambling-like behavior in past literature. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews conducted in retail settings, this study examines how consumers make sense of uncertainty through social interaction. This study proposes a two-layer model of consumption. In the first layer, social interaction during the consumption process helps consumers negotiate risk, generate meaning, and become more skilled buyers. In the second layer, consumers engage in moral and value judgments that involve distancing …
Covid-19, Politicization, And Vaccine Hesitancy: A Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Non-Medical Exemptions In Minnesota, 2014-2024, Benjamin Arnold
Covid-19, Politicization, And Vaccine Hesitancy: A Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Non-Medical Exemptions In Minnesota, 2014-2024, Benjamin Arnold
Geography Honors Projects
Vaccination rates have declined due to the growing hesitancy by many parents to vaccinate their children, signified by an increasing amount of non-medical exemptions. While there has been previous spatial analysis of exemption patterns as a threat to herd immunity, there has not been much post-COVID. This analysis provides a modern analysis of changing exemption clustering in Minnesota, while also considering the impact of public health being increasingly politicized. We used kindergarten vaccination data for 1475 elementary schools to analyze the evolution of clustering and predictors of NMEs across space and time in Minnesota, from 2014 to 2024.
Speaking In Color: Code-Meshing Against Standard Language Ideology In The Public Speaking Classroom, Darrion A. Walker
Speaking In Color: Code-Meshing Against Standard Language Ideology In The Public Speaking Classroom, Darrion A. Walker
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Public speaking courses do more than teach presentation skills; they also teach students which voices count as credible. In Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), instructional norms tied to standard language ideology position standardized English as the unmarked benchmark of professional communication. For students who speak African American Language (AAL) or other culturally informed language varieties, this creates a double bind: conform linguistically or risk being penalized for rhetorical authenticity. This reflective essay identifies the double bind as an underexamined problem in communication pedagogy and suggests that code-meshing—the intentional blending of multiple language varieties within a single communicative act—offers a more equitable, …

Community Problems Need Community Solutions: Feminist Collaboration Across Campuses To Create Transformative Outcomes Through Community Engaged Learning, Elizabeth Wilhoit Larson, Jasmine R. Linabary, Ziyu Long, Kylie J. Johnson
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This study presents a multi-institutional engaged pedagogy project responding to college food insecurity that involved partnerships among students, instructors, and campus food pantries from three U.S. universities. Through analysis of pre- and post-class surveys, class assignments, and instructor and community partner reflections, we argue that our feminist collaborative approach resulted in transformative outcomes in three areas: (a) heads, as the collaboration enabled critical understandings of food insecurity and how to combat it; (b) hearts, as the collaboration fostered a culture of care and (re)ignited shared passion in doing change work, and (c) hands, as the collaboration inspired actions to address …
