Zuni Pottery Making, Anna Keener Wilton Aug 1942

Zuni Pottery Making, Anna Keener Wilton

Anthropology ETDs

This report supplements the writer's mural painted at the Court house in Gallup, New Mexico. Because of its public location, where many persons unacquainted with the Southwest and its people, will undoubtedly view it, this report is intended to aid them to see it as the writer sees and intends it. This does not pretend to be a technical exposition but merely an aid to greater enjoyment through better understanding.

The Big Sandy Site, Henry County, Tennessee, Douglas Osborne

Anthropology ETDs

As the large program of archaeologic exploration undertaken by the University of Tennessee and affiliated government agencies expanded it became apparent that the original system of excavating a basin completely and then, and only then, of publishing a complete report was somewhat slow and unwieldy. This is more than ever true insofar as the Kentucky Basin is concerned. When one considers that the dam at Gilbertsville, Kentuoky, will back water to the Pickwick dam some 180 miles upstream, it becomes obvious that an adequate descriptive compilation of the archaeology of such an unusual area would be most difficult. Therefore it …

A Study Of Zuni Myths As Literature, Elizabeth Jean Lange Mar 1942

A Study Of Zuni Myths As Literature, Elizabeth Jean Lange

Anthropology ETDs

The realm of mythology seems at present to be one of the neglected fields of anthropology. There is an abundance of recorded myths available, which if intensively studied, would indoubtedly reveal much of great interest and real value to the anthropologist. The nature of the work done heretofore has been for the most part comparative, with only a few individuals attempting the detailed study of the folk-lore of a specific people. From time to time it has been pointed out that in mythology there is much of interest tor the student of culture in that through a study of myths, …

It was not expected that research of dowsing rods would be included in the planned work.

The Evans Site: A Contribution To The Archaeology Of The Gallina Region, Northern New Mexico, Charles H. Lange Dec 1941

The Evans Site: A Contribution To The Archaeology Of The Gallina Region, Northern New Mexico, Charles H. Lange

Anthropology ETDs

The Gallina Region in northern New Mexico is most accurately located by the intersection of 36 degrees 22' North parallel and the 101 degrees 52' West meridian. This is nearly the point at which the Llegua River, coming from the continental Divide about ten miles to the west, flows into the Gallina River (Plate II, a). A circle with this confluence as a center and with a fifteen-mile radius, would include the major portion of the ruins belonging to the Gallina group. Additional sites have been located west of the Divide in the Largo, Companero, Governador (Gobernador) drainages; south in …

A Tri-Lingual Text By Martín Colllió Huaiquillaf, Donald Brand Jun 1941

A Tri-Lingual Text By Martín Colllió Huaiquillaf, Donald Brand

New Mexico Anthropologist

To anyone who is somewhat acquainted with the southern Athapaskans of the southwestern United States, there are a number of marked historical similarities as well as some cultural resemblances between the southern Athapaskans and the Araucanian peoples. Both the Araucanians and the southern Athapaskans constitute discrete groups within which exist considerable differences of dialect (e. g., Picunche vs. Huilliche, western Navajo vs. Mescalero Apache), habitat (e. g., Navajo in highland steppe and forest vs. San Carlos Apache in lowland desert, Mapuche in humid forest vs. eastern Pehuenche in steppe and desert), native economy (e. g., sedentary agricultural Moluche vs. nomadic …

Married Students On The U.S.A.C. Campus, Donald L. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Marriage is an ancient rite. No one knows when it started or all the stages of its evolution. But it has survived and is today a main concern of the majority of people.

When the European colonist came to America, they had no desire to change their folkways and mores concerning the family. In spite of this, a type of family developed in America that is different from any of its European predecessors.

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne Feb 1941

An Ethnological Study Of Michoacán In The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth Centuries, Carolyn Miles Osborne

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is a study of life in the Michoacán proceeding the conquest and the changes in this life during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries due to the rule of the Spaniards. An attempt has been made to define, in the manner of common to acculturation studies, the cultural base upon which the pro-conquest Tarascans lived and to show how that was blended with the European or changed outright by it. The end of the eighteenth century was selected as a stopping place inasmuch as the rebellion which eventually resulted in Moxican freedom from Spain began …
