Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences

The two areas of the social sciences which were more stimulated by Darwin's research were anthropology and sociology. The Frenchman, Auguste Comte (1798-1857), generally regarded as the father of sociology and the originator of that term, laid the groundwork for the immediate application of the law of evolution to the study of society. Comte's conception of sociology is derived from his philosophy of history. Sharing the Enlightenment belief in progress, Comte saw history evolving through three stages. The first was the theological stage, in which men supplied supernatural explanations for the natural and social phenomena. This was followed bu what …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Sociology is one of the sciences of human behavior that has grown out of Enlightenment thought. In its present method and theory there is substantially nothing that was not anticipated by gifted seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century thinkers and their intellectual offspring in the Enlightenment tradition. From particular aspects of the grand theoretical syntheses that were characteristic of these centuries, a process of refinement and specialization has produced the sociology of the present day. Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

The Transfer Of The Indian Health Program From The Bureau Of Indian Affairs To The Public Health Service, Rebecca Lee Roberts Jan 1958

The Transfer Of The Indian Health Program From The Bureau Of Indian Affairs To The Public Health Service, Rebecca Lee Roberts

Student Scholarship

Service in 1955 represented a significant shift in federal policy aimed at addressing the substandard health conditions of American Indians and Alaska natives. For over a century, the Bureau of Indian Affairs managed these services, but by the mid-twentieth century, the Indian population faced mortality rates for preventable diseases, such as measles and pneumonia, that were many times higher than those of the white population. Proponents of the transfer, including various medical associations and state governors, argued that the Public Health Service possessed the professional resources, clinical expertise, and career incentives necessary to recruit qualified personnel and provide modern preventive …
